Discussion about
Frances Moore Lappe, born 10 February 1944 at 02:00 AM in Pendleton Oregon

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Frances Moore Lappé is perhaps one of the most influential women alive in the US today. Her work inspired millions to make more conscious food choices, which for many, means a vegetarian life style. As she has continued to write and lecture, we've seen a spate of other books about conscious eating. Slow food movements, organic foods, ideas for eating seasonally, and local farming initiatives are gaining popularity. Lappé's earliest works, written over thirty years ago, have proven to be prescient. As fuel prices have increased, today's newspapers echo her message about the dire consequences of raising crops for heavy industrial profit and especially for ethanol. Obesity and concomitant health problems are on the rise in richer countries and starving people elsewhere are suffering, dying, or rioting in the streets. This week, let's study her chart for astrological clues to her and her movement.
  • What factors in her chart might indicate that conscious eating and farming would capture her attention and propel her to write her seminal book which proved to be so prescient and influential?
  • What in the chart indicates her message that each person can make a difference? Where is the emphasis on courage and on hope?
  • Since she was born in the wee hours of the morning, we would expect to find the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the bottom half of the chart. But note that everything else is in the top or Southern hemisphere. What influence does this planetary distribution have on her and her motivation?

1. From the vedic perspective, exalted Jupiter in the 10th house of career is aspecting the 2nd house related to food and diet, giving an interest and high knowledge in that area. Jupiter is conjunct Rahu, the rebellious planet, which gives her a fresh and radical perspective on diet and social organization in general. Venus, the ascendant lord is in the third house in Sagitarius ruled by exalted Jupiter. This gives her writing and communication skill and links it with her career.

Focus on health consciousness is shown by her Virgo Moon conjunct the MC with Chiron nearby in the 10th house, also in Virgo. Her Mercury in ambitious Capricorn in the third house of writing suggests her passion for communicating her innovative ideas and the ability to do so. Her sixth house of work and service is ruled by Mars in highly verbal Gemini, conjunct Uranus, often the marker for someone with unusual ideas. Notably, her Part of Fortune in Taurus in the sixth suggests her dedication to improvement in farming methods aided by the practicial, hands-on planets in Virgo. Her Aquarian Sun aids her belief that each person can make a difference. Jupiter in Leo is the most elevated planet, strongly emphasizing the elements of courage and hope. The location of the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the bottom half of her chart suggest operating from a spiritual basis, and rather than seeking the limelight personally, she strove to accomplish her goal of improving the health of humanity. In addition, Pluto and the North Node in courageous Leo in the ninth house of publishing add considerable power and her commitment to 'getting the word out' to the public.

1) MC-ruler, Mercury (3) is in mutual reception with Saturn (r. 3) conjunct Ceres...a writer and communicator concentrating on issues pertaining to limitations and agriculture; writing about dieting and food.
2) Mercury (r. 8) in mutual reception with Saturn (8) (-Ceres) square Chiron...writing about how conscious, rational decisions can ultimately lead to healing and empowerment.
3) MC aspects the Moon (r. 9)-Uranus (co-r. 3) square...communicating a populist message; spreading the word on an unconventional subject. Remember that the Moon itself is an archetype of nurturance and digestion. And, both the Moon and Uranus are disposited by Mercury, which feeds into points 1) and 2), above.
4) Sun (3, co-r. 9) opposite Jupiter (9)...the preacher archetype with a message of freedom, communicated righteously.
5) Venus, also an archetype closely related to food via pleasure and sensuality, is in (2) and disposited by (and quincunx) Saturn, which feeds into points 1) and 2), above...the value placed on restraint and wise stewardship of the land; the desire for economy so that all may have enough.
Regards,
Dean Bensics

No one is as conscious an eater, or dietician, as a Virgo moon. Virgo is also the traditional ruler of places connected with agriculture, harvest and agricultural storage. Frances Moore Lappe connected with the public powerfully through her tenth house moon conj. her Virgo MC But, more than anything else, her ideas, foresightedness, humanitarian and democratic insights and initiatives are the essential spirit of her Aquarian sun (at its best!) expanded and encouraged (a word she repeats endlessly) by a strongly placed Jupiter. The pull between her Aquarian sun and s. node, and her Leo Jupiter, Pluto and n. node, express perfectly the need for individual courage/effort/expression (Leo) in the wider global community (Aquarius). Here in the neighborhood (3rd) as well as in foreign countries (9th). A deep thinker (sun, mercury in northern hemisphere) she needs to express her vision, philosophies, and feelings to the world at large (Jupiter, moon, Pluto, n.node in southern hemisphere) Her Scorpio asc. and Saturn (one of her final dispositors and ruler of her sun) in the 8th house make her keenly aware of big business and it's control (and could include a deep seated fear of death.) The ruler of her chart, Mars in Gemini, is set to convince "the other". Mars conj. uranus, in a kite formation with Mercury, the n. node, Pluto, Neptune = a powerful published, spiritual crusader of innovative and idealistic ideas. Her Venus in Capricorn is in the house of Taurus (according to Wikipedia her first husband, Dr. Marc Lappé, was a toxicologist and environmentalist.) Traditionally both of these earth signs have rulership of farms, stables and pasture land. Wish everyone's natal chart would fulfill it's potential and speak so clearly like this one.

We see a chart very much focused on bigger vs. smaller, individual vs. collectivism and health, nutrition and conscious efforts..
First and most obvious is the moon, natural ruler of the public and in this case ruler of the 9th house of other peoples and countries conjunct the midheaven in Virgo, sign of foodstuffs and the harvest..a career focused on health and food..squaring mars/uranus in the 7th house of others, shows her life goal (midheaven) of food and nurture squaring with agression and self interest (mars and gemini) in the house of others
Part of fortune is in the 6th house of Virgo and of self regiment, health and service, showing success in this area and its pivotal importance stressed by occupying the nodal degree...
Sun in close opposition to Jupiter, Sun in Aquarius, the self in the house of collectivism opposing Jupiter of expansion in the sign of Leo, or self glorification..her choosing the sun and talking about collectivism and striving for that
Pluto, co-ruler of the chart and conjunct the north node, shows a life of fame and respect, Mars, co-ruler in Gemini conjunct Uranus shows versatility and writing ability..Mars/Uranus and Pluto as chart ruler =revolutionary life
Strong trine from Sun to Saturn...health conscious, thin, longevity and formidable self discipline
Venus, ruler of the 7th unaspected in Capricorn, marriages to be out of control, come and go, very unusual marriage circumstances

Ceres is an appropriate addition to this chart, since it has to do with food. We find it at 24 degrees Gemini, retrograde, working with Saturn. She feels a responsibility to communicate and educate about our connections with the Earth and with each other, especially about food and food production, nutrition, nourishment.

Could not help but be intrigued by this chart since my own is a mere 6 weeks earlier and we have had similar lives. My early Sag. Asc puts many of our planets in the same houses. In the interest of evaluating the outer planets by sign and houses in common, I've listed the parallels. Mars/Uranus conj. in 7th can be several marriages: 3 for her, 3 for me. In Gemini, it gives rise to strong verbal and written abilities: we are both writers and teachers of alternative health techniques (and spirituality in my case). Pluto/N. Node conj in 9th, as focus of a kite, does indeed require the native to give their wisdom to the world, and it is compulsive... feels like a 'mission'. Moon in 10th is the emotional need to go public with their own brand of wisdom. Mercury in Capricorn and in mutual reception with Saturn, is a pragmatic thinker, with a head for business. Virgo MC: the public direction is in health and healing, and the qualities of meticulousness and credibility are projected to the world. Saturn in Gemini is the karmic need to communicate. Jupiter in Leo, in 9th, exalted in her chart, ruler of mine: benevolent education, hope and inspiration to the world. Jupiter/Sun aspect (hers is opp.; mine is trine) is the righteous communication, preacher or guru mentality. Overall, some interesting similarities.

In vedic - What factors in her chart might indicate that conscious eating and farming would capture her attention and propel her to write her seminal book which proved to be so prescient and influential? She has Mars, the 2nd ruler (house associated with food) aspecting the 2 most important planets in the chart, the Moon and the 1st ruler Venus. She also has Sun, SN/Ketu and Mercury in the 4th house which is the house of agriculture. With career, Mars aspects 10th ruler as 2nd ruler (house of writing as well as food) while exalted 6th house ruler Jupiter (6th is house of health, diet and personal habits) is in the 10th house. Jupiter in the 10th also shows a need to raise the consciousness of the public and is especially strong because it's exalted.
What in the chart indicates her message that each person can make a difference? Where is the emphasis on courage and on hope? I'd think having the Moon in the 11th house and the uplifting exalted Jupiter in the 10th house.
