Discussion about
Don Imus, born 23 July 1940 at 1:33 PM in Riverside CA

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

Don Imus hosted one of the most popular talk shows in the US. He is a master of interspersing humor with serious commentary, intelligent remarks with acerbic bias, and astute observations with juvenile antics. No stranger to the insensitive, offensive and insulting remark and to the fallout he causes, he has vowed in the past to cease making racial remarks. Past vows notwithstanding, his recent remarks about the Rutgers Women's Basketball team caused such an outcry that he was fired from his lucrative and popular radio show. This week, we offer his chart for your astrological insights.
 • Imus's planetary placements form a bowl pattern, framed by an opposition between Moon and Neptune, both in square to Venus. What do the bowl pattern and the mutable T-square tell us about him?
 • What astrological factors indicate the seemingly unstoppable need to be insulting, provocative, challenging to his guests? Where are the prankster and the wit in his chart?
 • Imus drifted for a while after his discharge from the Marines. He found his way to radio broadcasting and has had frequents ups and downs in his career. He has suffered drug and alcohol addictions, has seen tough times, has gotten himself fired or reprimanded for conduct unbecoming. On the upside, he has enjoyed great popularity and success in his broadcasting career and has been a great fundraiser for his children's charities as well. What astrological factors indicate great ups and downs in his personal life and his career?

What I would like to discover is where the theme of insult commentator arose? I realize Don Rickles was yesterday. Where do Ann Coulter this current has-been come from, in the psyche? Name calling and insults have shock-value which they market. Can anyone describe in Imus chart if he is a trend setter or reflecting a Zeighest contained in millions of pyches? Is he a symbol for collective expression? If so where is it symbolized in the chart? _

Chart fits Imus like a glove (well tropically)
Scorpio Rising...note the hawkish features...thick eye brows...intense eyes...thin long frame and thick shcraggy hair as well as prominent nose...one of the two types of Scorpio ascendants..other being squatter and muscular...
Mars, ruler of the chart, top of the chart...and at the nodal degree...a public personality...showy...but a crisis because of personality..with Leo im not suprised he had his foot in his mouth alot...Mars is too fast...Leo is to showy...but not a bad heart at all
Notice chart ruler Mars, in tight square with Jupiter...Mars=Action, Jupiter=Judgment...problem with knowing what to say when to say it..got him in trouble with transiting Saturn at the midheaven reinforcing the square..
Fired when Saturn hit the midheaven and squared Uranus with Algol...He literally lost his head by opening his mouth..Uranus is in its detriment in Taurus, so his biz arre conservative comments (Taurus)cost him his authority and power (Saturn in Leo)
T-square to Venus in late Gemini...Venus lord of 12th and 7th house (open and secretive enemies)which flared up when he made those comments and got him fired...Uranus transiting the moon in pisces activated the t-square
The Sun with Pluto in Leo shows the agressive, domineering, intense personality...especially at the top of the chart...Sun ruling the midheaven took him to a very powerful position despite comin from modest circumstances...
South node in the 5th house with the Moon there shows the sentimental attachment to children...the South node with the lunar Piscesean theme shows his compassion for affliction struck children..
I really think he is a decent man who is a bit controversial with things he says, but certainly not a hater...i think hes lke that about any group..just kinda says stupid things..Didnt deserve to loose his job..he was genuinely sorry...they should feature Al Sharpton's chart on here next week...A troublemaker who also has scorpio rising

lwood - my guess is these are fire sign traits.. fire likes to burn. fire is interested in changing things by taking charge, whether through the destruction of something- character assassination mostly with these folks you named), forcing change on others, or forcing their ideology onto others.. perhaps pluto enters into this and why some like the association of pluto with aries. it is interesting how this fellow who i have never heard on radio or know anything about, has a sun/pluto conj in leo. i would suggest anyone with a strong jupiter/mars and to a lesser extent sun or pluto, is much like the element fire in pursuing this same pathway... perhaps it also works best in the absence of much air, which is the 'civilized' element.
i haven't read the questions put by adb yet.

just a quick note-transitting pluto opp.his natal venus. he's probably been a real pain in the behind to his wife for a while now, then pluto makes him really show his true colors when he hurls an unprovoked insult on more women, the basketball team. Pluto transits his second, hitting his eigth, so the consequences are financial, and also quite a blow to his self-esteem. The Plutocrat King has fallen, and much more to come.

The T-square between Pisces Moon opposing Virgo Neptune, both squaring Gemini Venus in the 8th house shows a man with mixed emotions towards women. He may feel sympathetic on the whole with Pisces Moon, but has periods when he can become antagonistic, even biting and cruel verbally with Gemini Moon in the 8th house. This tendency was shown by his nasty remark on the air concerning the basket ball team women. He didn't start the insults (8th house Venus), but he sure carried them further. His Venus is in such bad shape with the semi-squares to Jupiter/Saturn and Mars that it reinforces the T-square totally.
This particular bowl pattern begins with the Pisces Moon and ends with Neptune in Virgo in opposition. It can show one who overreacts emotionally to situations even when one doesn't see the whole picture clearly. It also indicates that emotions are ever changing in polarity. There is no middle ground in the emotiional life.
When the Leo Sun is conjunct Pluto in the house of world-wide broadcasting, one might assume that we have found a broadcasting "bully." The ancient ruler of his Scorpio Ascendant is Mars and Pluto is the modern ruler. Mars is squaring both Saturn and Jupiter which conjunct his Decendant from the 6th house.
In the 7th house of the "public" sits Uranus who nobody can trust even though he is making four sextiles and a trine. I would call Uranus the trickster with his sextiles to Mercury/Moon (sextiles simply providing opportunities). Uranus also parallels Mars.
His wit is shown by Jupiter/Saturn and all of their aspects mentioned above. We think of Jupiter as being jolly and Saturn as being cynical when it comes to wit. With both of them squaring Mars we see his wit can be quite sarcastic. With both of them bi-septile the Moon, he will suffer lonely regrets over this last situation.
Imus' particular bowl chart with the opposition from Moon to Neptune is probably the biggest factor indicating great ups and downs in his personal life and his career. The Moon denotes our emotional life, memories, habits, needs, and relationship to mother. Pisces Moon is problably one of the more sensitive placements. His sensitivity is heightened by the opposition to Neptune who does not allow us to see clearly what the matter is until we're blinded by the "light". The mutability of it all simply adds to the struggle. He does this, does that, turns left, turns right, stands on his head, but still nothing works to keep him fulfilled. Someone said, alcohol addiction is very simply a search for the Spiritual life. That's why they call it "spirits." I think the same thing can be said of drugs. They are a search for Spirit.
No matter what goes on in that bowl chart of his, he always winds up dealing with the Moon opposite Neptune.

Some thoughts on the natal disposition:
1) Sun (r. MC) conjunct Mercury (r. 8) and Pluto (in 9, r. 1)...a career in communications, involving discussions of power and big ideas. Imus' show centered on politicians and media people discussing "Inside-the-Beltway" politics. Imus was the ringmaster around which everything revolved. Sometimes the conversation could get extreme or raunchy.
2) Mars in Leo square ASC...the archetype of "the cowboy". Imus cultivates this image with the big hat and the ranch in New Mexico. He also possesses a grizzly, combative demeanor. Notice how he's always sparring with his wife.
3) Jupiter-Saturn conjunct DSC...proving a point to others; projecting societal attitudes to the public. Imus is a social commentator, espousing opinions on the topics of the day that affect society. With this conjunction squaring Mars, we get the archetype of "the crusader" on a mission to tell it like it is.
4) Venus-Moon-Neptune t-square...notice that Neptune rules the 5th house of children; Moon-Venus are archetypes of home and comfort. The Imus ranch provides a comforting home-away-from-home to kids with cancer and other terminal diseases.
Imus possesses great sensitivity to children with illness. He's been a great crusader in the fight against autism. Notice that Venus co-rules the 12th house of chronic diseases. He and his wife Deirdre (Venus-ruled 7th) are advocates for children's diseases and the possible linkage with environmental toxins.
Also, with Venus (r. 12) square the Moon-Neptune opposition, there can be a tendency to being overwhelmed by sensitivities and to withdraw into seclusion as an emotional escape. At worst, this can represent the archetype of "the addict". We know that Imus had a problem with drugs and alcohol for many years.
5) Uranus square MC and =Sun/Moon...the archetype of the "rebel non-conformist". Imus' entire career has been built on testing boundaries with his outrageousness. Wasn't he the first "shock jock" radio host? I always thought that the high and mighty loved appearing on his program as a way of taking a break from the political correctness pose that is required of their positions. Imus was a blast of energy in the opposite direction. A prankster-clown in a thin-skinned era.
Regards,
Dean Bensics

>>What I would like to discover is where the theme of insult commentator arose? I realize Don Rickles was yesterday. <<
Imus made a reputation for himself years ago with a comedy album a genre made popular by Bob Newhart. Rickels came first with the insults, but night club comedians had been insulting audiences for generations. Rickels brought it out of the nightclubs and into TV and everyone's home. Imus original schtick was outrageous telephone calls and his hit album was called "1000 Hamburgers to go." From there he became one of the initial "shock jocks," although Howard Stern claims that genre orignated with him. Imus' radio show was advertised with the slogan "Did you hear what he said today?"
Originally the show was sexual ineundo, a format Stern ran with. The political format came later as noted in the biography. AM radio was dying, being replaced by FM and AM stations needed to do something to hold audiences that they were losing to the technically superior FM. Talk radio was the answer. Imus' career can be seen as bridging the music to talk format on AM radio.
As for the concept, if the public didn't love it, he wouldn't exist. The simple fact is this: crap sells; ask Howard Stern. Imus is simply the victim of selective outrage. Books and movies have produced that offer advice on how to kill the President of the United States without much in the way of protest. It was more than 10 years ago, maybe 15 that Imus referred to the New York Knicks as "Hubcap thieves in short pants." At least he was attacking men. He once "apologized for saying "thieving Jews." The apology was for the redundancy. Nary an eyebrow was raised.
William Lilly once described Saturn in Taurus as severe, sullen, and strict, but Jupiter is so close that such a description is laced with humor. In other words, the audience (7th house) sees this as humorous. These planets oppose his ASC. He reflects or provides what his audience desires. Imus has a severe countenence, he is sullen in appearance and demeanor, and his outlook is kind of strict - strictly his way. The agression is from the Mars square. One of the more interesting things about this chart, that I've never seen in a progression, but have in solar returns is that progressed Saturn and Jupiter, due to retrograde motion, have reversed their natal positions. Although this has been in effect for some time, I wonder if this is as tight as the conjunctions get or if something else triggered this configuration. That would take more work than I'm willing to do at the moment.
The progressed Moon is about to conjoin the natal MC, this should be a good time, but she squares natal Uranus who is conjunct the malefic fixed star Algol. They just don't behead them like they used to.

1.) " What do the bowl pattern and the mutable T-square tell us about him?"
The leading planet in this bowl pattern is the Moon so this indicates one who leads with his emotions and because it is a Pisces Moon in the 5th house his emotional (Pisces Moon) risk taking (5th house) would be key theme in his life.
The T-Square further emphasizes the theme of one not in control of his emotions. Moon/Venus squares can produce an overly emotional type and especially in mutable signs. Adding Neptune into the mix (the Lunar dispositor) continues this theme of one not in control of his emotions
2.) " What astrological factors indicate the seemingly unstoppable need to be insulting, provocative, challenging to his guests? Where are the prankster and the wit in his chart? "
Uranus in the 7th house gives the insulting, provocative and challenging. Mars square Saturn adds to the confrontational nature along with Mars in a T-Square to the ASC/MC axis.
Mars square Jupiter and Mercury sextile Uranus give the prankster and the quick wit.
3.) " What astrological factors indicate great ups and downs in his personal life and his career?"
Uranus square the MC shows a career full of surprises; sudden advances and reversals. Sun conjunct Pluto shows resilience and the ability of the self to dramatically (Sun in Leo) rise from the ashes (Pluto)
Also; the Moon/Neptune opposition at the rim of the Bowl show a life that would be defined by extremes.

M. Imus is affected by a Mars square Saturn. This brings out the bully side of him in spite of acts of generosity. Mercury in Cancer helps humour, Venus, Moon, Neptune give us his drifting and drug addictions. Also his Sun conjunct Pluto meant an almost unavoidable moment of self-destruction because of the aspects kinship with Scorpio. It is up to him to regenerate his life now.

What a fascinating chart! Note the current transits: Saturn stationed square his ASC within minutes of exact.
Uranus inconjunct natal Mars: the unexpected and explosive
Pluto within minutes of exact opposition to natal Venus: perhaps he will have a change of heart and this year unfolds.
One thing certain, we haven't heard the last of him and this Summer as Jupiter stations in trine to that nata. Mars he may be back on the air or perhaps he'll join Stern and Oprah on Sirius.
Uranus brings liberation and detachment, but not always in the most gentle way, nor in the way the native would have planned, but it does bring freedom.
Insults? The Mars SAturn angular of course! COuple that with Merucry conjunct the Sun and Pluto.
Remember, Molly Ivins had the Mars SAturn square only not so tight and many of us remember her for insulting republicans and coining the name "shrub."
Bigger question already asked, why do we the people respond to this type of discourse and what happened to civility and ethics????

The Scorpio ascendant (tropically) has a bad rap for being a bully...
The appearence certainly leads to it...often hawkish features, narrow like eyes...menacing and intense looking...and with Mars in rulership thats of course part of the ball..mars always attracts fights..
However, in terms of him being a Bully...I dont buy it...
I empathize with alot of Imus placements as I share them...the mutable t-square, the watery moon, Mercury retrograe in Cancer...what it often produces and I can say this about myself also...is a poor lack of judgment, Im always chastized for not having a "filter" on my mouth..this is the result of a mutable t-square...a mutable t-square not only can make someone very nervous and chatty..but they simply love to see reactions from people and often as Im sure is the case with Imus they know so much about everything that they love to share it with everyone..
I call this combination of factors...the "i hate everyone equally" pattern...that is to say no one is safe, but no one is singled out either...its not because the person is bigoted, but merely enjoys the humor of making fun of every culture and ethinicity etc..its not a particular gripe...just the desire to see the rise of people and stir the pot..a mutable t-square can be the antithesis of political correctness..
If people have listened to Imus...they should realize that he does this about all people, all the time...he got nailed this time, by sharpton, another famous Scorpio rising...because Saturn was transiting the midheaven in Leo...bad enough to have Saturn transiting, but in Leo it loves to wack authority figures off their pedestals...
The square with natal Uranus was the shocking comments of the conservative nature (Taurus)..but a bully, eh i dont buy it...
The Mars-Saturn square is more of the too much too little aspect...or more stop-go...he doesnt know when its too much or too little or when to go or to stop and as such he gets frustrated with limitations and on the other hand free hand can go nuts and wreak havoc...the person has the inability to know when its time to stop...in Imus case it played in his career as well as his personal life with addiction to booze..its frustration at limitation and license..
Naturally, the judgment is also affected because Jupiter squares Mars, creating an even bigger problem with foot in mouth disease..constantly not knowing or being inable to monitor his actions..
The Venus-Neptune affliction actually makes for a very compassionate person, someone who despite their flaws is chartiable and decent...this was a man who really sought to help children and the infirm, recognizing his own weakness with the bottle...
Do i think he was a bit of misogynyst? Sure, Moon and Venus in square can produce such a problem as both are the natural rulers of the women...but he was not by any means a hater of woman..perhaps a tad chauvanistic but ill bet he was also the type to be romantic with his wives and always hold the door for ladies etc..Basically he felt men were men, women were women...antiquated and traditional for this generation of mine but not wicked or spitefull
But that Moon-Neptune from Pisces to Virgo was compassionate and caring...this guy would have given all he had to the unfortunate if he could...the strong were license to be poked at by him, but never the weak..
I feel strongly that they really knocked a decent person off his perch with this...just another victim of political correctness and loose lips...but by no means wicked and besides...what about forgiveness? He certainly was sorry
And now all the good he did is incidental to appeasing the consumers and advertisers...what a waste...

Hi
I had no idea who he was, just looked at his tough face, then to the chart, what a tough chart !!!
1.- mutable t-square: conveying meanings, opinions, data, prejudges, communications.
2.- Insulting and provocative, Mars Saturn , Mars Pluto (trotsky and cho ), Uranus angular. saturn in 7th ( close to it )
3.- ruler of 10th conjunct Pluto, crisis in prefesional life; uranus square MC, erratic unstable , related to conflicts with people

M, I'm wondering what wonderful textbook gave you that description of a Scorpio ascendant? A few others who have ascendants within a few degrees of Imus are Linda Evans, Sarah Ferguson, Clint Eastwood and Thomas Bradley. Linda Evans has the exact same degree on the ascendant. Oh, and Chelsea Clinton's ascendant is nearby, too.
If ascendants were that easy to distinguish, astrology would be a grand science by now! I suspect the real cause of Imus' 'hawkish' appearance is the elevated Mars square the ascendant, perhaps helped by the oppostion of Saturn. In part, Lilly says of Mars: "Hair many times crisping or curling, sharp hazel eyes, and they piercing, a bold confident countenance, and the man active and fearless." (p. 67, Christian Astrology, Astrology Classics edition.) Scorpio is on the 2nd sidereal house, the house of speech, and speech has been both Imus' gift and downfall. The elevated Mars squared by Saturn from Aries describes his public persona: the strong opinions, acerbic speech, biting humor and challenging remarks.
The 2nd house is also addictions taken through the mouth such as alchohol, and Imus had a number of addictions including alcohol. Because Mars is in its fall squared by another planet in its fall (Saturn), though well placed by house, Imus had both a kind of fame bordering on the notorious as well as battles with addiction.

I don't see a mention of Imus' ninth house with its aspects fairly screaming out BIGOTRY, religious and racial intolerance and the rest. Heck, everybody has their good side and he was exaggerating for shock effect which worked for him up until now.
I have to disagree with Therese Hamilton about the physical appearance. Imus has classic Scorpio features, the hawkish look, bushy eyebrows, intense eyes, long nose with the typical nostrils of Scorpio which is especially seen with Scorpio sun but I've seen it with the ascendant too. Clint Eastwood's face has some of those certainly and I've known many Scorp ascendants who fit it. My moon is in that sign so I guess I've been more apt to notice them along the way.

Astrohag, what about all those other Scorpio ascendants that don't have the so-called Scorpio look? I've been keeping files of ascendants by decanate, and the one detail that ascendants seem to have in common (by decanate perhaps, but this needs more research) is a certain eyebrow structure.
So the area around Imus' ascendant tends to have brows that slant inward toward the nose. But the other facial details will vary with the planets aspecting the ascendant.
Grace Kelly, Katherine Hepburn and Dick Clark also have Scorpio ascendants, though in different areas of the sign.
Like I said, with Imus we're seeing a powerful Mars aspect to the ascendant. Otherwise we'd expect Grace Kelly to look like Imus.
There's been a lot of confusion between planets and signs. There's nothing like the ADB database to clear up the confusion. But still....as astrologers we love to talk but don't study the thousands of horoscopes at our disposal to compare the effects of planets and signs.

In law school those bastards make you show youre sources so im used to putting my money where my mouth is Therese..
Just to you know the hawkish characteristics of Scorpio are probably derived from the fact that according to lore Scorpio represented the Eagle/Hawk when its highest form
Here goes... Llewyn George, Horoscope maker and delineator... page 191..physical characteristics of Scorpio rising..thick hair waving or curling...sometimes frizy of crimpy..prominent brows..aquiline or jewish type of nose and profile and dusky complextion..
Aquiline means hawkish basically and the Jewish nose as to which im familiar, being jewish Smiley is now called a roman or semitic nose which is hooked..
I dunno Therese, you say ur moon is vedic Libra making you sugar and spice but I always can sense that biting fierceness of the scorpio tropical moon i have in myself Smiley
Im begining to think that tropical works better natally and vedic with prediction etc, but of course just my opinion, not necessarily the right one Smiley

But it is right of you to question Therese...such things must come from somewhere

Whole Signs Houses:
1) Imus's planetary placements form a bowl pattern, framed by an opposition between Moon and Neptune, both in square to Venus. What do the bowl pattern and the mutable T-square tell us about him?
His Bowl Pattern (self-contained, self-satisfied and often championing a cause) located mainly in the conscious, purposeful and willful section of his chart shows his challenge to overcome the unoccupied areas in the impulsive, instinctual and often unconscious portion of the chart.
Framed by the Moon (emotional memories of childhood) in Pisces (moody, unstable, difficulties in establishing boundaries, addictions, fantasy) in the 5th House (playful and often senseless risk taking) opposed (conflict, choice, resolution) to Neptune (highly sensitive imagination) in Virgo (discriminating, criticism) in the 11th House (groups, others (7th from 5th), shows his reactions (opposition) to other groups in an emotional/instinctive/impulsive (Moon) and playful (to him) manner.
The Mutable (fluid, mental) T-Square (tensional motivation) between the Moon/Neptune with Venus (desires of the mind) at the dynamic focal point square (discord, strain) in Gemini (communicating mind) in the 8th House ( attraction (Venus) to things forbidden) shows his tendency towards provocative comments of which the resolution (opposition) lies in the 2nd House (values)/Sagittarius (morals, ethics). 2) What astrological factors indicate the seemingly unstoppable need to be insulting, provocative, challenging to his guests? Where are the prankster and the wit in his chart?
In addition to the above overall tone there are many, many factors contributing to provocative and challenging behavior, some of which are: Sun (narcissistic, egocentric, presumptuous, justifying, rationalizing, defensive, pig-headed, contemptuous if criticized, obstinate, prideful, unforgiving to enemies, self-aggrandizing, headstrong, willful, arrogant, dismissive) in 10th House (Striving for power that is without scruples and inconsiderate of others) conjunct (driven) Mercury (communication) and Pluto (intense, obsessive). Moon (emotions) sextile (state of mind) Uranus (discontent, rebellious) and Mercury (mind) sextile Uranus (freedom of speech, sudden tactless statements). Asc/1st House (forceful personal presentation to the environment) in Scorpio (unerring ability to put his finger on the sore spots of others).
The prankster and wit are also shown through many factors such as: Sun/Leo (the adolescent), Mercury/Cancer (eternal child, trickster prankster, wit, (Mercury), childish playful behavior (Cancer), Moon (childhood) in 5th House (children, playful).
3) Imus drifted for a while after his discharge from the Marines.
Uranus (sudden events) in Taurus (finances) in the 7th House (relationships) square (manifests discord) Mc (goals) in Leo (the individual) in the 10th House (career).
Life's ups and downs can often be indicated by the Part of Fortune (PF = personal fortunes) in Cancer (dramatic) in the 9th House (where opinions (his) are publicly proclaimed) and its contacts for good or ill. Here we have Uranus (sudden changes and events) in Taurus (possessions, money, personal resources) semi-square (strain) in the 7th House (personal relationships) and also semi-square the MC (goals) in Leo (the individual) in the 10th House (career).
It should not be surprising, with or without astrology to find one who makes his living by provocative comments to overstep and on occasion put his 'foot in his mouth'.
