Discussion about
Paul Farmer, born 26 October 1959 at 07:59 AM in North Adams MA

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Paul Farmer is a man on a mission: to bring health care to those who need it most. Under his visionary leadership, the organization he co-founded, Partners in Health, not only opens clinics and hospitals, it provides health education and engages the local community in its outreach programs. Although he has had lots of help, Farmer is another example of one person following his instincts and interests to start a movement. His drive, his passion, his commitment and his accomplishments are noteworthy. Recently he was featured on "60 Minutes" where he acknowledges the thousands of lives he and his co-workers have saved. As we watch the ongoing debate over health care in the U. S. and hear about health care crises here and elsewhere in the world, we thought it would be instructive to learn more about Paul Farmer and review his chart.
  • Where in the chart is his vocation and mission? What factors might indicate that he would devote his life to the issues of health care (or lack thereof) and poverty? Where is the man's legendary drive and ability to get things done? What motivates him to give so much of himself to the cause of bringing attention and medical care to the impoverished?
  • Farmer has been so successful because he and his organization have emphasized and established partnerships between the advantaged and the disadvantaged. Where in his chart do you see the idea of partnerships that solve huge problems?
  • Where in Farmer's chart do you see his unusual upbringing? Is there a connection between these astrological factors and those that indicate his vocation?

What strikes you instantly is 1) Virgo in the 10th which would give him that Virgoan interest in health and Pluto on the MC (Koch Houses) suggesting an influential (OK and controlling) figure who would become a bit of a legend. But 2) there's that close mini grand trine of MC Pluto trine Saturn sextile Sun Mars Neptune. Neptune Saturn is often associated with health and sickness. It also leads to all manner of interesting midpoints of which a couple are Sun = Saturn/Pluto which is what Nelson Mandela has - able to live a live of deprivation. Mars = Saturn/Pluto = facing danger and risk etc etc. Also there's a close set of semi sextiles from Pluto MC to Moon's North Node to Sun Mars to Jupiter to Saturn which also adds weight to a plethora of midpoints. And his healing Chiron in humanitarian Aquarius opposing Moon Uranus square Mercury. On his astrocartography he's got both Jupiter MC and Saturn MC through Africa which suggests his best work may be done there.

Following Mercury leads one to interesting places. Its importance is of special significance since it rules the MC and conjuncts the ASC.
1) Mercury in mutual reception with Pluto (=MC, r. 12)...giving a powerful voice to the forgotten and the unseen. The Virgo MC and the 12th both connect to issues of health, disease, hospitals, critical illness.
2) Mercury square Moon (r. 9)-Uranus (co-r. 3) in 9...intellectual focus on international affairs with a humanitarian bent. Also, the writing/academic life is emphasized.
3) Mercury square Uranus (9), which is disposited by Sun (co-r. 9)-Mars-Neptune in 12...fighting to uphold humanistic values (Uranus, Neptune) in the international arena (9).
4) Mercury (r. 8) squares Chiron, which stations direct a week after birth...a powerful statement regarding healing as a vocation in life.
5) Mercury conjunct the asteroid Pallas...the power of justice and righteousness.
6) Mercury-Jupiter-Saturn parallel by declination. Jupiter and Saturn are both archetypes of society and social order. Notice that they are both final dispositors. Therefore, the intellect and the career, as represented by Mercury (r. MC), are focused on the structure of society, hence the career in anthropology.

Dr farmer has mars and Neptune in scorpio,12th house and Jupiter in sagittarius,1st house The three planets are in their homes. They are extremely powerful: with mercury in scorpio house 1 they may determine Farmer's career---Farmer studied humans' past(origin of humans-scorpio),medical cares-Neptune and three foreign languages. 1-Pluto rules Ascendant is in virgo conjoins MC and venus in virgo all in house 10th.Sun,Mars,Neptune in scorpio house 12th indicate that he would devote his life to issues of health care.He studied infectious diseases and aids both rule by Pluto and Neptune respectively Ascendant ruler's-Pluto cojoins Mc virgo in 10th house and MC ruler-mercury in scorpio house 1 Mars conjoin Sun and Neptune in Ascendant gives him driving and fighting forces for the poor/less privilege people or communities 2-Taurus is in cusp of house 7th, rules by venus. Libra is in the cusp of house 12th and this is his North moon node also rules by Venus.North node means what we come to do in this present world and in farmer's case Venus is in his career house-10th. Remember Libra rules is house 12th- So parthnership in medical line,With less privilege/poor people and travel over the sea to another nation for pathnership and marriage would be OK. 3-His early life home--house 4,is rule by aquarius the sign noted for unconventional, changeability, Aquarian cusp square mercury in scorpio in house 1. Aquarius cusp opposes moon/uranius conjuntion. Moon in 10th house.Uranius in 9 house. In early life lived in old school bus change to mobile home trailer in Birmingham.AL then to rebuit boat in Florida. i.e moving from one community to another.Unusual earlylife-aquarian sign in 4th .Moon 10th house cojoined Uranius house 9th.His career invloved moving from USA. to Haiti and to other nations like Rwanda Moon/Uranius also mean moving from one community to another

Moon/Uranus T-Square with Mercury - high intelligence directed at unconventional challenges.
Pluto conjunct MC - Capacity to totally tranform his world in terms of career focus, further emphasized by four more planets in Scorpio, and enhanced even further by the tight Saturn/Pluto trine, a power aspect, and the Jupiter/Pluto square, a money aspect. Very Scorpionic personality throughout - it manifested it terms of the world's poor, but my gut feeling is that I would not want to work for this guy.
Chiron conjunct Descendent - He didn't like that childhood, regardless of the way it shaped his capacity for wanderlust and nomadic living conditions.
Mars/Neptune Conjunction - Grant Lewi says this conjunction gives the power that Alladin gained from the lamp. I would add that it seems to do it in the house in which it resides. So it is no surprise that it manifests in the house of hospitals and suffering, and also no surprise that he did extraordinarily well in a large, prestigious institution like Harvard (which seems to have done quite well by him).

Dr. Farmer's Sun/Mars/Neptune in Scorpio in the 12th house of hospitals and other institutions indicates that he might work with people who are destitute or on the verge of death, as many of the Haitians who make their way to his hospital are. The Mars/Neptune conjunction brings energy to health care, but it also reflects Farmer's radical ideas about money and resources since it's in the sign of Scorpio. Examples: He gave his grant money to Partners in Health, he thinks health care should be free, etc. The North Node in Libra suggests good fortune through partnerships. The Moon/Uranus conjunction at the Midheaven, opposing the IC, indicates upheaval in the home and an unorthodox home life. The last I read, Farmer's Haitian wife was living in Paris while he was spending a great deal of time in Haiti. This situation may have changed, though. In any event, the Moon/Uranus also symbolizes the adopted child and a revolutionary attitude about family. I've featured a link to this AstroDataBank profile on my blog, Astrology Mundo, http://astrologymundo.wordpress.com/2008/07/15/paul-farmer-a-hero-of-haiti-and-h ealth-care/

a t square in a chart is a dominant theme.. when it hits an angle as it does here it reinforces its importance.. this chart is in sharp focus as all of the planets and angles (excluding jupiter and perhaps venus) are involved in planetary pictures..i think the t square drives the chart, while the mini grand trine with pluto/m/saturn and planets in scorp at top keeps the person on a very focused and determined pathway.. the eastern hemisphere focus with moon/uranus conj leading the way into the western hemisphere suggest the desire to be of service to others, but in an extremely focused, willful and constructive way...his unusual upbringing is described in the t square - moon/uranus conj in particular.. the humanitarian goals are a focus due the same conj being opposed by chiron in aq - a planet associated with healing.. teaching at harvard would seem to tie into this also with mercury and jupiter in sag rising.. this would explain his more outspoken political views as well.. the ascendant at the neptune/jupiter midpoint would strongly support his vocation as well..regarding work in health care, it is cliche to suggest it has to do with virgo and the virgo placements, but i think chiron is a key planet in all of this as well.. my 2c's.a great and fascinating chart.. thanks for having this person as an adb newsmaker..

The most outstanding feature in this chart that comes up straight away and suggests his direction in life is the position of the 9th house. This house is normally associated with foriegn countries, foreign people, languages, and broad education and injustices. All of these issues are related to Paul farmer. But its not the 9th , but the 10th house that's filled with many planets as you can see. Why is the 9th so important, then? The method of Astrological Prediction is based on understanging the relationships between planets and houses, so that a planet that rules one house but is found in another house will affect different departments of life. Now I know Jupiter, which rules the 9th house is found in the 1st house, ruled by Mars, however, Mars(which rules the 1st house, and where Jupiter lies) has a 30 degree angle with Jupiter. This is most significant. It indicates a determined person with a mission. The nature of that mission being obvious, we now have to determine the outcome, the future or the result of such activities. Then we look at the 10th house, a neighbouring house. The activities of one house affects the neighbouring house extremely severely. Therefore the career(ruled by the 10th house) will be affected by activities of this person. Now the 10th house is rule by Saturn, and describes the social standing and career of a person. Note the 60 degree aspect between these two and you will see how the Sun "shines" in the career of this person, an individual who will succeed with his missions.

All those planets and the ASC in scorpio give Farmer the passion and drive to follow his dream symbolised by the personalised Neptune very strong in the 12H with the ruler of his ASC mars and the ruler of the 10H, the sun. The passion and drive is reemphasised by PL his co-ruler on the MC and the ruler of the MC in scorpio in the 1H. This is a chart that just shouts someone who will not go unnoticed and will have a role to play in solving humanity's problems. The moon/uranus on the 10H cusp will of course account for his unusual upbringing and his own unusual life style. It is noted that both rulers of the money houses (2-8) and other sort of support and help (jupiter and mercury) are in the 1H helping him to achieve his personal aims. These two planets were activated by progressions in the years that Farmer received large grants. Jupiter rising, Mercury rising, the strong emphasis on scorpio and virgo give emphasis to health and surgery; his organisational and business abilities are assisted by a strong saturn in capricorn in 2H trine MC/PL

Perhaps I'm missing the right strand but I don't see anything about the Russian attack on pro-Western Georgia which is the biggest standoff between East and West since the end of the Cold War. Georgian President Saakashvili's ill considered impulse (Sagittarius Sun square Uranus and Pluto) to grab back South Ossetia while Putin was jollying in Beijing has spectacularly backfired. It will wreck his chances of NATO membership later this year which would have put Western forces on Russia's border. Though who started what is lost in the smokescreen of disinformation since the Russians were clearly armed and ready to retaliate - or provoke? Since it now rolls us back to pre 1989 politics might this not favour John McCain who won't look quite as old fashioned as he did a month ago? While Obama's Hollywood love-in suddenly starts to look like an irresponsible frivolity. It could also explain the Leo Solar Eclipse falling directly on the ascendant in Washington, DC and indeed on Bush's Leo planets as well as on Obama's Sun. Eclipses are a wake up call and this one certainly has done that.

Paul Farmer has had wonderful time starting from 1992 December when he entered into Sun dasha. The next 6 years till 1998 December were period of recognition and achievemnts. The last 10 years have been glorious with respect to dedication and success has been 100%.Time remain too good till December when he would be getting offers to work with many organisations. He will be starting Mars dasa from December 2008 and next seven years will be full of hard work when he will make contacts with highly placed people. He will continue to contribute for the society and the family life will be in excellent mode. The sun & Mars in the lagna will release an ending energy and they express higher mental expression/ determination.I expect him to get another world renowned award/ recognition for his work during 2010-11 and again in 2015. However he must remain careful for his health during November 2012 till 2013 September. This period remain risky for travelling & driving as mars is the lord of 2nd & 8th house. Overall a very good horoscope.

Hi surlybroad,
With the presidential campaigns going on, all the action is over on the Obama and McCain threads, but after the election is over in November, I suspect things will get back to the usual routine, and a new celebrity chart will be put up. Hope that answers your question.

ADB has been sold. The new owner just might pull the plug on the forums all together. I wouldn't blame him because many folks here have proven that they cannnot be civil on an internet forum, and there is precious little astrology dicussed by the regulars here.
You know who you are.

kepler, your lecture and tone remind me of another adb poster who used to post under the name jotown... if you want a podium to take pot shots at others, you only have to look at your own words to know why a community opportunity is lost when instead of love and support, sneering and hostility are offered... keep posting astrology and stay away from the former to make this a better place..

Sandstone: You have got to be joking!? You... sandstone.. making ADB a better place?!..... I don't think that Jotown has posted here in a year or so and yet you still invoke his name whenever someone speaks the truth. I am sure he would get a laugh if he knew that you still think about him so much. I saw him at UAC where he was performing music from his astrology CD and I told him that I missed his posts at ABD because they were always informative and astrological.
A cancer has spread in this forum over the last several years and you Sandstone, (James, s, or any of the other phony names you post under) have been one of the biggest carriers. Your nasty, rude, snide - and worst of all non-astrological comments - have dominated this place for a long time.
Jotown doesn't post here anymore and yet you manage to get into arguments and snits with lots of people. The problem isn't the other posters here. Do your self (and all of us) a favor and look in the mirror. You will see the reason that your life and personality is what it is. It is all about you.
Now I know that you don't know much about astrology, but one of the things that it can help us with is self awareness. You should take a break from these forums (and give everybody else a break as well) and try to figure out what shadow part of your chart is responsible for your toxic and vitriolic expression of your personality.
I have watched you run off a lot of good people over the years here. Maybe its time you just run away yourself. I will go to Jotowns website and find his email so that I can tell him about this. I am sure it will give him a chuckle.
Meanwhile; I wonder how long it will be before they shut this place down.
