Discussion about
Dick Cheney, born 30 January 1941 at 7:30 PM in Lincoln NE

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

  • Cheney has been in positions of great power for most of his life, yet he always holds the power in a humble, "behind the scenes" fashion. I expected a below the horizon chart, but it is a splash chart. How does he come by his "power behind the scenes" style.
  • Cheney has had four heart attacks since he was 37 years old. Can you find a signature for heart attacks in his chart?
  • Biographies of Dick Cheney all mention his coolness, ease in positions of responsibility and the "gravitas" (weight) he brought to the ticket. All these are Saturn words. Do you see a prominent Saturn in his chart?
  • Cheney's positions on the issues are all classic conservative Republican stances. Can one find political persuasion in a chart?

  • His discreet style comes from his Ascendant in Virgo, Mercury, ruler of AS and X, in VI, house of day to day work, the waning square between Sun and Saturn giving failure fear, Neptune in house I which does not push to public life.
  • Heart attacks come from the Sun in Aquarius, in VI, Uranus ruler of the Sun conjunct MC, the waning square from Mercury, ruler of the Ascendant in VI to Uranus ruler of the Sun near MC.
  • Yes Saturn is prominent because of its square to the Sun, and he is the first ruler of the Sun in Aquarius, and of Mercury in Aquarius, Mercury being the ruler of the Ascendant, because also of its semi-square to the Moon in Pisces, because of its position in House IX.
  • I think he is conservative because fixed signs are prominent in his chart: Taurus and Aquarius. Saturn also likes political responsibilities and Virgo is a perfectionist. Aquarius rules groups and corporations, so is prominent in the charts of political men, Saturn ruler of the Ascendant making people more turned toward the past (conservative). In Cheney's case, however, Uranus could make him more open to new worlds, to future, so I think.

Saturn conjunct Jupiter in Taurus square Sun is certainly an indication of conservatism. (He'd be tight with his money for sure.) (R. Reagan also had Saturn conjunct Taurus but in Capricorn.) The grand trine to Uranus in Taurus would mean that he is seen as an original or radical conservative thinker.
Mars square Moon opposing Neptune indicates health problems which may become worse when Saturn transits late Gemini and Pluto moves to conjunct his Mars in two years time.

When I progressed his planets, I relocated him from Nebraska to Washington, DC. When he had his problem this month, note that the Progressed Moon was already past the exact conjunct to Uranus.
The full Moon came up in 19 Virgo on 9th March - opposed to his Natal Moon in 18 Pisces (sign of hospitals/places of confinement)... and square to Natal Mars.
Natal Moon is in square to Natal Mars in Sagittarius (Mars ruling invasive surgery).
While the full Moon was approaching, it was extremely powerful (magnetic pull) and it was during that approach (leaving the New Moon) that he had his "stint" replaced.
If he is a Taurus riser (which I think), the ruler of his Ascendant is Venus, and she has progressed to 6 Aries semi-sextiling Natal Jupiter/Saturn - not a good omen.
Transiting Uranus and Progressed Moon have left their aspects to Natal Venus recently, but when a planet is aspected, it is kind of like being "fertilized" - if you know what I mean - made ripe.
When one "sifts" through his natal and progressed charts, then looks at the hard transits of the heavy planets, things become more clear (if one is looking for specifics, of course). All is there.....
One reason some astrologers have difficulties interpreting a chart is that they are looking for too many things at once - then confusion and chaos result.
The best thing to do is look for one subject at a time i.e. character, health, marriage, etc.
Later...

Having a Pisces moon opposing Neptune in Virgo clearly demonstrates the fact that this individual is motivated by fear and chronic insecurity.
Pisces moons are often overwhelmed by the experience of life, feeling victimized by everything. Sometimes the reaction to such psychology, is extreme conservatisms, as this is the case, and finding refuge in ideals of religious purity which were out of date already as the middle ages ended.
Shying away from any form of progress and risk in an attempt to keep oneself safer than safe. Thus promoting policies to promote illusions of security, such as the case of high investments in weapon development.
This is back by his Aquarius sun which makes him insensitive to wildlife. Another illusion which is to boost the industrial progress to profit man (Aquarius) over nature.
The coolness attributed to his personality is probably related to the Aquarius signatures, which makes him unmoved by any form of drama. Yet this comes to camouflages his phobias, and consuming fears of losing control (Pisces/Neptune...)

Two points for consideration: the account for the "power behind the scenes" style (question 1) might also include the prominent role of Pluto (invisibility), especially considering its opposition to the Sun.
Re: "coolness" (question 3): Cheney's Moon is opposed Neptune, accentuating its sensitivity. But the Moon is also sextile (same degree) Uranus. Uranus is not about feeling and sensitivity but about science and mechanization, and would therefore have a very radical effect on the Moon's expression (if only giving it a front with which to hide behind), making for a very 'cool' personality. (There is a suggestion here that Cheney's personality is quite contradictory.)

Several major indicators suggest that March/April 2002 will be a tremendously stressful (perhaps even fatal) period for Cheney. Transiting Neptune conjuncts the natal Sun (debilitating to one's vitality, and also loss of some sort), transiting Pluto comes to natal Mars (extreme overload and burnout along with war indications), and also transiting Saturn trines natal Sun (pressure and responsibility heaped on the individual, perhaps to the breaking point). Even transiting Mercury gets into the act, squaring Cheney's natal Mars during March 2002. Earlier March has transiting Sun square natal Mars, and latter March sees transiting Sun first opposing Neptune, and then conjunction the south node (none of which is very encouraging for vitality and health). Mars moving through a square to Pluto, then conjunctions with Jupiter and Saturn, and finally the square to natal Sun also suggests excessive pressures, all in the first half of March 2002. Earlier March has transiting Sun square natal Mars, and latter March sees transiting Sun first opposing Neptune, and then conjuncting the south node (none of which is very encouraging for vitality and health). Mars moving through a square to Pluto, then conjunctions with Jupiter and Saturn, and finally the square to natal Sun also suggests excessive pressures, all in the first half of March 2002. (The Secondary Progressed Moon is very interestingly at the conjunction with his natal Uranus during this most recent heart attack). Secondary Progressed Mars is in the last degree of Capricorn (a very critical, stressed-out position) within little more than 1/2 a degree from conjuncting the Progressed IC (the end of the matter). Note also that Solar Arc Directed Saturn is only very slightly over 1 degree from inconjuncting natal Sun (approaching!). Is there any protection provided by Solar Arc Venus within 1 minute of arc from conjuncting natal Moon? Maybe not, as it is likely that Cheney's wife (Moon) will be receiving much support, sympathy and love if he passes. Note lastly that George Bush Jr.'s Mars (in Secondary Progression) in Bush Jr.'s chart will be squaring Bush Jr.'s own natal Sun, suggesting the death of someone very important to Bush Jr. (and even including the possible death of Bush Jr. himself!). More to come, enjoy astrology!

Saturn in the chart? Let's take a look at it using the Vedic system. Leo rises, so Sun is the asc ruler. Saturn throws a major asp (backwards sq) to the Sun. The Sun in the 6th house of service and in a Saturn ruled sign, shows the behind the scenes personality type. Sun in 10th or 1st would be more visible. The conservative, somewhat hard-headed qualities are shown by the T sq of Sun, Saturn and Pluto. Jupiter is part of this, too, and that planet is known to be conservative, traditional, pro-status-quo. Also, Mars in an angular house in Scorpio squares the Moon. That, in itself, wouldn't necessarily be conservative, but can be harsh; even ruthless. In the navamsa, the Sun and Moon are cnj and involved in a T sq with Mars and Saturn (also Neptune and Jupiter), emphasizing these characteristics even further.
Interestingly, the heart problems are shown by the same features that show the personality traits. The heart is ruled by the Sun, which is in the 6th house of health/illness, squared by Saturn in its fall (Aries) and opposed by Pluto. Very bad for the ticker. As Saturn rules his 7th house of death and Sun rules 1st house of life, physical body ... when death comes it will most likely be caused by problems with that organ. All major aspects show a hard driving, type A personality. There is nothing (like a strong Venus) that indicates that DC would be good at relaxing and taking it easy. This does not help when a person already has the physical set-up for heart trouble.
Since Saturn, ruler of the 7th, is conjoined with Jupiter, ruler of the 5th (a benefic house) in the 9th (also a benefic house) a good marriage to a spouse who is a success in her own right is shown. On the other hand, Jupiter, ruler of the 5th of offspring, being conjoined by Saturn in it's fall, shows some difficulty with children. The fact that one daughter is gay may rankle and be a source of unhappiness considering DC's conservative outlook.

When I was preparing my article for The Mountain Astrologer (Feb/Mar 2001), "The Day Mercury Stood Still: Charting the U.S. Election Chaos," which was sent to press in mid December 2000, I took a guess at Cheney's time (see page 127 of that issue). In the article I wrote, "... a chart cast for 7:30 p.m. CST is my initial speculation, given his heart condition (Sun in the 6th, Leo on the 12th cusp) and his most recent elevation to power (transiting Saturn and Jupiter near the Midheaven)..."
Imagine how delighted I was to see the report of a 7:30 p.m. birth certificate! If that time holds up, it certainly does make sense, and I'm happy to see AstroDatabank giving us all this space to comment on Cheney's chart - it is a great service to the astro-community.
One final note: Uranus made a station the very day before Cheney was born. Add to that the elevated position of Uranus and it becomes especially powerful in his chart.

I think the main feature of the Cheney chart is Sun opposite Pluto combined with a gentleman who is conservative to the point of not believing in womens rights or gay rights even though he was women and gays in his life. He does believe in reagan and star wars . I predict that kind of tension will do him in soon.

The Vice President's Health
Vice President Dick Cheney's recurrent health issues have generated much concern and upset in recent days. Speculation about his imminent resignation and potential successor is rampant. Nonetheless, astrology suggests (at least to me) that he will remain in office until the beginning of next year. At that point, a significant health crisis may develop which forces him to consider resignation.
A brief look at the Vice President's chart for health indicators reveals two significant factors. The first is the sixth house Sun that forms one of the squares of a fixed T-square in the chart. The sixth house is the house of daily routines, both work and health related. Having the Sun in the 6th often implies concerns that require the individual to conscientiously structure his daily habit patterns in order to maintain health. When a sixth house Sun forms one of the squares in a T formation, tremendous stress and tension is experienced by the individual in the domain of the sixth house, and difficult and recurrent health problems can result especially during a powerful transit or progression.
The second factor in the Vice President's chart that indicates problems in the area of health is the tight square between Uranus, the ruler of the sixth house, and Mercury, the ruler of the Ascendant. A square between these two rulers indicates a dynamic tension between the individual and his struggle to maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle. It further indicates that health issues will erupt suddenly and forcefully (Uranus), especially when there is a significant stimulation of Uranus. On March 6, the day of Cheney's recent cardiac procedure, transiting Uranus was 22Aquarius09; exactly square his natal Uranus at 22Taurus09.
In order to consider future health-related problems for the Vice President, we should examine the following: problematic or highly stimulating aspects to the ruler of the sixth house, Uranus; planetary action impacting either the Ascendant or its ruler, Mercury; and difficult planetary configurations involving the Sun. We have already seen that the exact transit of Uranus square natal Uranus brought Cheney a trip to the hospital. This transit will return in the last weeks of August and the first few days of September and may well bring a repeat performance, especially around August 23rd when it is strengthened by Mars' position. Uranus returns for the final transit in December, exact on the 24th, amid more problematic planetary conditions.
In the coming months Uranus, bringer of the unexpected and the unpredictable, will cross the degree of Cheney's Mercury (ruler of the Ascendant) remaining there for an extended period, from late March through early July. In addition, the warrior planet, Mars, will be crossing Cheney's natal Mars and squaring his Moon from late March through August. Thus, the Vice President will be on a roller coaster of activity, stress, and highly volatile situations during the spring and summer months. Although these transits will stimulate powerful mental energy and forceful action, they will take their toll as well, as indicated by yet another significant planetary configuration of the coming months: converse progressed Sun quincunx Saturn.
As the year winds down, Cheney's converse progressed Sun (8 Sagittarius) moves into a quincunx (150 degree aspect) of his natal Saturn (8 Taurus) indicating increased limitation, fatigue, and burden (Saturn). This progression will be unfolding in the summer of 2001 and grow in intensity until July 2002. The transiting Saturn station of late December, January, and February at 8-9 Gemini is likely to trigger it. Simultaneously, we will see the final pass of Uranus square Cheney's Uranus (ruler of the sixth house of health) in late December and the final pass of Uranus conjunct Cheney's Mercury in January and early February. It is around this December - February period that a possible major health crisis looms.
By March, Neptune, the planet of dissolution, will begin its year-long transit of Cheney's Sun, indicating a more drifting, unfocused period, no longer caught up in the exigencies of politics. At the same time the converse progressed Sun will be moving into closer aspect to Saturn implying greater limitation. It should be noted here that the Sun in astrology is symbolic of the heart, and health issues relating to the heart often show up in transits and progressions to the natal Sun. Thus, a possible scenario emerges for the Vice President of increasing restriction and possible crisis around the turning of the year that may force the need for a less stressful lifestyle as we move into Spring 2002.

In our first try, we saw a powerful (Pluto) politician (Jupiter rules laws and lawmakers) going through a Neptune phase. Our estimated time was off, but our description was not. Pluto (semi-sextile Asc.) and Jupiter co-rule the angular IC, and the converse MC opposed natal first-house Neptune in 2000. What changes now is that Cheney is not a scary radical, and depends (Neptune) a lot on his wife and friends.
The Virgo-rising Asc. shows humility, and trine extremely powerful Jupiter-Saturn makes Cheney an excellent manager for detail. More than a classic conservative, however, we see a classic politician - saying one thing and doing another. With an intercepted tenth, his career benefited from financial (Taurus) opportunism (Gemini). The Gulf War protected the oil industry in general, and Halliburton received nearly $4 billion in federal contracts and loan guarantees. Dependent on the Washington revolving-door for fame and fortune, Cheney denied in the Veep debate that government had anything to do with his being better off than in l992. He may actually believe this, as the Neptune-Moon opposition makes what is objectively false appear subjectively true. As Cheney's Moon exactly opposes and prophetess Lynne's (ruling?) Venus exactly conjoins US Neptune, we would like to briefly digress on its meaning on the 19°Gemini-rising US chart.
US natal Neptune (tenth co-ruler) in Virgo detriment shows both the moralistic criticism of government by citizens and skepticism of government involvement in religion by the founders. Historically, Neptune relates to the French help at Yorktown, and to the giveaway Louisiana Purchase of the heartland (fourth) - Belle Fourche, Verdigre, Pierre, Grand Marais, Prairie du Chien, Des Plaines, Des Moines, etc. People raised in the Midwest like Dick and Lynne know they are the real Americans - the repositors of threatened and fading civic virtue. The best short description of the US Neptune archetype comes from F. Scott Fitzgerald:
"One of my most vivid memories is of coming back West from prep school and later from college at Christmas time...When we pulled out into the winter night and the real snow, our snow, began to stretch out beside us ... a sharp wild brace came suddenly into the air ... Even when the East excited me most, even when I was most keenly aware of its superiority to the bored ... towns beyond the Ohio ... - even then it had always for me a quality of distortion ... (skip pages) ... And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder ... He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields (Virgo Earth) of the republic (tenth co-ruler) rolled on (as inland waves of sea god Neptune) under the night"...
Matthew Shepard attended the same high school as Cheney, but didn't make the same bucks with Coors as gay daughter Mary (I misstated Elizabeth). As corporate hogs continue their Washington wallow and Mr. Downsized scrubs floors alongside illegal immigrants, Cheney self-righteously proclaims mythical virtues. Can compassionate-conservative "sympathy cards" resolve the structural problems of long-term economic change for inner-city "cancer sufferers"? George W. finished Yale while Cheney flunked out, but he doesn't know either. Does the NASDAQ collapse portend anything for the general economy? Not if we "believe in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further ... and so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" ("The Great Gatsby").
The heavily-aspected twelfth-house ruling Sun in sixth shows his history of heart problems. On Nov. 22, 2000, chart ruler Chiron exactly transited natal eighth ruler Mars, and quincunxed the MC in early March. We respect Dick and Lynne Cheney, and wish them well. While free will exists, the astrologer's job includes forecasting future tendencies. If it's wrong for Clinton to lie about sex, is it right to fib about Cheney's health? Once again, he may actually believe that it isn't and won't be a serious problem.
A simple interpretation of his converse MC hitting seventh-house Pisces Moon in 2004 is that he won't finish two terms as VP. We need Lynne Cheney's chart to confirm this prediction, however, as her Saturn coincides with Dick's MC.

I had wondered if every "newsmaker" chosen here would have a conjunction with 1996 TL66! Here is another one - this time it is the Sun which is so close:
1996 TL66 9:52 Aquarius Sun 10:48 Aquarius
This body certainly seems to show up where capacities are unleashed and amplified - where one seeks or expresses "Total _______" (total something, often power) - and some form of notoriety seems to follow.
Interestingly, just as Placido Domingo is "known for his voice" (1996 TL66 conjunct Mercury) here it is the Sun (heart) which is emphasized.
2000 WR106 was recently given the name 'Varuna' - the first TNO (trans-Neptunian object) to receive an official name. Varuna is known as an ocean deity, but also as a punisher, who is seen with a noose made from a snake.
Cheney has a close trine between this body and Mars.
Mars 17:46 Sagittarius Varuna 16:55 Aries
Cheney has another interesting trine
Sun 10:48 Aquarius Asbolus 11:44 Gemini
The centaur Asbolus (literally 'sooty') seems to show up where one has "an instinct for darkness" - as a fighter of disturbing menace, or a knack for celebrating or exploiting dark imagery.

  • How does he come by his "power behind the scenes" style. Virgo rising and Virgo ruling his 2nd cusp (Placidus) suggests someone who prefers to work and earn a living behind the scenes. I believe it was Grant Lewi who noted that Virgo often hides its light under a bushel basket. In addition, Virgo is ruled by Mercury, which occupies the cadent (hidden) 6th house. The other Mercury ruled sign, Gemini, is intercepted (hidden) in the 10th of public standing (using the Placidus system).
  • Can you find a signature for heart attacks in his chart? Sun (the heart) lies in the 6th of illness and squares Saturn, the traditional ruler of the Aquarius 6th cusp. The Sun rules his Leo 12th house of hospitalization. The Sun is also the Chaldean ruler of his Virgo Ascendant, placing an emphasis on the heart in health matters. The Ascendant ruler Mercury occupies the 6th house and squares Uranus, modern ruler of Aquarius. Also of concern is his very close sesquiquadrate between Mars (force, aggression) in Sagittarius (foreign interests) in the 4th house of final endings and Pluto (power, domination) on the cusp of his Placidus 12th house of secret enemies. Such aspects often indicate the risk of a violent ending. The 8th house has a Pisces cusp, making Jupiter the classical ruler of his death. Jupiter occupies the 9th of foreign affairs and squares Pluto on the cusp of the 12th. Given the 20-year presidential death cycle, both Cheney and George W may need extra attention from the secret service.
  • Biographies of Dick Cheney all mention his coolness, ease in positions of responsibility and the "gravitas" (weight) he brought to the ticket. All these are Saturn words. Do you see a prominent Saturn in his chart? Coolness is a Mercury as well as a Saturn trait. Mercury is emphasized by his Virgo Ascendant. Saturn is square his Sun, conjunct Jupiter, and trine the Ascendant. His Midheaven (public image) at 27 Taurus lies in the Capricorn decanate of Taurus, which has the Chaldean ruler Saturn.
  • Cheney's positions on the issues are all classic conservative Republican stances. Can one find political persuasion in a chart? See #3 above. Taurus and Saturn prominent suggest a very conservative approach to the world.

I have had various birth times for Dick Cheney starting when he was a Reagan appointee. Most of them showed Jupiter/Saturn conj. in the 12th house which would certainly support the behind the scenes personality. He was born with the same energies that generated world war 11. This chart shows Neptune in the first house conjunct the north node which indicates he perhaps displays an identity that fools everyone.
I think the main feature of the Cheney chart is Sun opposite Pluto combined with a gentleman who is conservative to the point of not believing in women's rights or gay rights even though he was women and gays in his life. Just a quick observation after a short perusal of Cheney's chart. He has only one personal planet, Mars in Sagittarius, in a fire sign, and only one planet, Venus in late Capricorn, in a cardinal sign. This indicates clear limits when it comes to personal self-promotion. Although his Mars forms a square with his Moon, the force of this configuration is greatly muted by the placement of Mars in the fourth house, focus on family and home life, and the Moon's sign of Pisces, which generally suggests a more retiring and reticent nature than one that is aggressive and directly confrontive. Additionally, Mars forms a close sextile to the ruler of the Ascendant, Mercury, which softens his presentation significantly. The placement of Mars, ruler of the eighth in the fourth house, shows that his power lies in close personal contact with others.
The Moon is in the focal position at the apex of a kite formation, part of which includes a sextile to Venus and an opposition to Neptune in the first house, thereby greatly mollifying the Moon's square with Mars. Moreover, Neptune retrograde in the first, opposite the Pisces Moon, suggests a more retiring, less aggressive political nature than one suited to out front, direct political combat. However, with the great emphasis on fixed signs in his chart, and the grand trine in earth, he is a formidable opponent who is little inclined to compromise his ideals and values and not likely to be easily moved once he has made a decision, no matter how pleasant and charming his manner.

Cheney's health is the big question. Mercury, the ruler of his horoscope is in the 6th house of health and about to be hit by transiting Uranus. This combination alone is reason for concern. But especially so since Mercury squares Uranus and opposes Vesta. Then his progressed Midheaven is conjunct Chiron, another worrisome indicator. Transiting Neptune conjunct his Sun soon, and already squaring his JU-SA conjunction urges him toward retirement, but transiting Saturn entering the tenth is at the height of personal power, making it difficult to retire.
Transiting Uranus conjunct Mercury, symbolizing his physical body as the ruler of the chart, looks like another heart attack waiting to happen.
Thx for finding this data; great discussion!

It's interesting to me how far in advance Lynn had perceptions. Awareness is a Neptune thing, isn't it? Wonder just how aware she was about who would play her character's part in real life?

Eerie, Cheney sure looks like FDR (though with less of a heart, I'm sure, )Smiley. FDR was also Aquarian with Virgo Rising, mercury in Aquarius in the 6th, and had Jupiter and Saturn conjoined in Taurus in the 9th. I'm very curious about the upcoming Mars retrograde, and the impact it will have on his natal Moon in Pisces Sq. Mars in Sagittarius. Mars in the 4th (end of life, ruler of the 8th) rules his pr. Sun in Aries, and he will have 3 Mars returns in the next several months. Something for liberal minded astrologers to look forward to?

  • Dick Cheney's chart significator is Mercury/Aquarius which is the chart ruler of his Virgo Ascendant placed in the service-oriented 6th house occupied also by his Aquarian Sun. Cheney's Pluto (power)/Leo is placed in the 12th house of "behind the scenes" positions of power.
  • Cheney has several health factors--his Aquarian Sun is ruled by Uranus which is squared by Mercury thus the problem with electrical impulses. His Sun is also opposed by Pluto and then squared by Jupiter and Saturn--all factors which are difficult for the heart especially as he ages.
  • If you look to Cheney's Aquarian Sun ruled both by Uranus and Saturn, you see they are both in Taurus ruled by Venus in Capricorn which would substantiate a prominent Saturn.
  • All roads lead to Rome--when you look for a final significator for Cheney's chart and one political persuasion, I arrive at Venus in Capricorn--the ultimate in classic conservative Republican stances.
