Discussion about
Bruce Springsteen, born 23 September 1949 at 10:50 PM in Freehold NJ

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

When Bruce Springsteen finally broke through to national recognition in the fall of 1975 after a decade of trying, critics hailed him as the savior of rock & roll, the single artist who brought together all the exuberance of '50s rock and the thoughtfulness of '60s rock, molded into a '70s style. He rocked as hard as Jerry Lee Lewis, his lyrics were as complicated as Bob Dylan's, and his concerts were near-religious celebrations of all that was best in music.
Springsteen is back on tour with The E Street Band rolling out a post-9/11 message of hope.
  • Time Magazine writes, "Springsteen's pleasure is famously infectious. Springsteen feeds off the crowd, which feeds off him in an endless cycle of stadium euphoria." Can you find this circuit in his chart?
  • His latest album "The Rising" capitalizes on Bruce's most winning trait - empathy for "the working man" (and woman). Despite his being a multi-millionaire and not having had a real job since 18, he always manages to hit the right note when singing the blue-collar blues. How does he manage to tap directly into the minds and hearts of the working class?
  • In November of 1989 he broke up with his band of 15 years. (He got divorced that year, too.) Thirteen years later they are back together again. "The Rising" is his first album in seven years. Does anyone hear a Saturn cycle? What was going on in 1989 that he devastated his relationships?

His Gemini rising suggests to me that the public would be attracted to his ability to communicate and the charisma of the sign. (He shares the strong Gemini with Dylan.) My favorite Springsteen songs are the quiet soulful surprises, which I think are related to the Sun in the fourth house (the seat of the soul). He has a capacity to express his deepest thoughts and feelings with ease. The north node in Aries in the 10th portrays his energy in concerts, as does Mars in Sagittarius, although the chart being loaded below the horizon suggests that he is more comfortable in his private, deeper life. I am only an amateur at astrology, but these things jumped out at me. I have always been fascinated by Springsteen's depth and different presentations. This is the first time I've looked at his chart. Thanks for the opportunity to do so.

I feel that Bruce's popularity among the blue collar workers stems from his strong Moon placement in Libra. The Moon symbolizes the public and sign Libra is very "other oriented" and quite social. It is conjunct Mercury and Neptune. It is an inspirational type of communication in the form of music that makes Bruce so popular and helps him tap into the working class. With a late Aquarius MH I guess his astrologer advised him to go on tour and appeal to zeitgeist of patriotism and hope (like 11th house key words: hopes and wishes) since transiting Uranus (freedom) has been hovering there for quite some time. Please pray for peace. Thanks & congratulations, Lois!

1. Probably 4 planets in Libra (including Sun) - most in the 5th (using Porphyry). All of these disposit to Venus in Scorpio - which then circuits to Pluto in Leo in the 3rd, then back to the Sun. Sun-Venus-Pluto circuit involves the public, pleasure and communication. However, nothing in this circuit specifically suggests music as a medium - but I guess in fact Springsteen is more noted for his lyrics than he is for his melodies/music. This would also be reflected by his Gemini rising.
Also with Sagittarius on the 7th dispositing to Jupiter in the 8th - this might suggest a deep emotional sustenance surging back and forth with the public - although this might be stretching a bit.
 2. Saturn in Virgo in the 4th. Well-grounded, solid values.
3. Using that terminology one would suspect a Pluto/Venus involvement. His Venus is in a tight square to his Mars and Pluto had just recently transited both by November 1989. This must have been building for some time though - Pluto first contacted his Venus/Mars pattern in late 1987 - but was done with both Venus and Mars by late 1988. So this might not be it.
The only other transit of note was a Uranus to Uranus opposition - the final pass was indeed during December 1989 - but this is more of a life cycle transit - which is perhaps more than enough to provoke the parting of the ways. But we all have Uranus to Uranus oppositions about the same age...
There was a progressed Sun coming to natal Venus - but that wasn't exact until June 1990...

A few years ago I led a class into an interpretation of Springsteen's chart. It is true that the chart signifies a very contained bowl along the lower and private side of his complicated life. It has always been my feeling that Mr. Springsteen feels more comfortable with the private side of his life, and there's many reasons for that. It must be remembered that the real tension in this chart comes by way of two mutual receptions ... the sun and moon... and the sun and venus. The sun and moon suggest that he has much conflict with his inner and outer needs, which means that he uses his private life to pursue emotional creativity. He also yearns for emotional satisfaction in love, because of an emotional imbalance with his masculine and feminine energies. To top it off, the midpoint of this reception conjuncts neptune, meaning that he needs to withdraw from the public domain in order to discover who he is. Secondly, the sun venus reception relate to test of the ego regarding self worth in love relationships. He constantly battles with cooperation and comprimise, thus making him fluctuate between being stubborn and indecisive, a trademark for the libra personality. The good thing about all of this is the talent that comes forth to be musically creative. In 1989, he was finishing up a two year cycle with pluto over his venus, bringing about endings with his band and a personal relationship. It was time for him to cut bait and re-think the direction of his life. Endings always translate into rebirth.

1. TIME writes, "Springsteen's pleasure is famously infectious. Springsteen feeds off the crowd, which feeds off him in an endless cycle of stadium euphoria."
Pleasure: a stellium of 4 planets - Sun, Moon, ASC ruler Mercury, and Neptune (music) -- in Libra in the 5th house (Placidus or Regiomontanus).
Moon (the public) conjoins ASC ruler Mercury and closely squares 7th ruler (the public) Jupiter. Moon (the public) is trine the Ascendant. The midpoint of Moon/Neptune = ASC ruler Mercury, which Ebertin delineates as "control of inner vision by intelligence or common sense, phantasy and imagination, creative thoughts, artistic talents."
2. His latest album "The Rising" capitalizes on Bruce's most winning trait - empathy for "the working man" (and woman). Despite being a multi-millionaire and not having had a real job since 18, he always manages to hit the right note when singing the blue-collar blues. How does he manage to tap directly into the minds and hearts of the working class?
The musical planet Venus (dispositor of this 5th house Libra stellium) is sextile Saturn in Virgo, symbolizing hard labor.
3. In November of 1989 he broke up with his band of 15 years. (He got divorced that year, too.) .. What was going on in 1989 that he devastated his relationships?
If we look at his tropical non-precessed Solar Return of 23 September 1989, we find the Return ASC, Neptune, Saturn, and Uranus all conjunct (within an 11 degree span) in Capricorn in the natal 7th house of partnerships. The Return Capricorn Stellium opposes his natal Uranus (breakups) and the Return Jupiter (which rules the natal 7th of partnerships). In addition Solar Return Uranus at 1 Capricorn 25 closely squares his natal/return Sun, warning of excessive individualism and the breaking of important bonds with others during this Solar Return year.

Saw his "solo acoustic" show in Charlotte. Jupiter is conjunct his mercury/neptune/node. Simply incredible! Despite, asking for quiet and posting notices that no one would be seated except between songs, he engaged in pleasant banter with the crowd and even shook hands with the front row afterward. Mixed the "devils and dust" material with "the rising" and many older hits (the river; blinded by the light) and deep cuts (racing in the streets; highway patrolman) but soo many of the songs were/are relationship based (empty sky; when you're alone; two faces) Pluto is transiting his dsc. His "working class conection" was also prominent (nodal return) -could be seen in the alternate versions of "reason to believe"in the opening and closed with "promised land."

Uranus rising in Cancer--electrifies crowds, identifies with USA ("Born in the USA"), identifies with ordinary people (Cancer); Uranus trine Venus-- gives charm. Gemini rising trines Mercury, Neptune, and Moon in Libra--rapport with crowds, easy manner, communicative. Mars conj. Pluto in Leo gives that rough appearance, manly, rough voice, and the sextile of this to Ascendant gives a manly look; its sextile to the Libran stellium gives energy, intensity, and talent in the arts, and sex appeal.
Uranus square Sun shows divorce, changing of feelings. Jupiter in Capricorn shows success in career, trine Saturn in Virgo, especially, making him a hard worker.
South Node conjunct Libran planets shows a karmic connection with the arts, and with music, giving success as a reward from past lives, perhaps.
MC Aquarius trines its ruler, Uranus, giving phenomenal career image. Sun in Libra 0 gives initiative in the arts, and pours his energy into music.
I do not like his singing voice, as I feel that he cannot sing. I think the best thing about him is her personality and his manly, rugged look.
US Sun, Venus, and Jupiter are conjunct his Venus, and in Bruce's first house, giving him great good fortune in the US, and making him identify with the American working man. HIs song, "Born in the USA" probably stems from this first-house conjunction.
Venus in Scorpio, combined with other factors, gives him that rugged look, muscles under a sleeveless t-shirt, lantern jaw, etc., and a rough-hewn sort of art and voice. His voice is not pretty and neither is his music.

In Vedic chart, 1.,2. The traits of success with crowd and empathy for the "working people" could have common root. His 1st house ruler, Venus, is with Moon in 6th house (service), aspected by Saturn (planet of working class). Because he personally is strong (Venus in own sign, exalted in Navamsha etc.), he can give this power to other people (Moon in Libra), to please them (Venus). This combination shows very modest attitude for life, rather atypical for show biz star, but making him generally closer to "common" people. If we look at divisional charts, we can find Moon in Libra in 8 of 16 of them - this is very deep trait of his personality and theme of life, which has various shades and impact in other areas of his life. Most notably, Moon is in 2nd house in Navamsha - vargottama position, showing easy flow of this trait on soul level, also long-time and enduring popularity and social status. It is interesting that his 2nd wife (showed by 2nd house in navamsha) is background vocalist in his band, and therefore is key person (helper) in this process. Another Moon in Libra we can find in 1st house in Dashamsha (career chart), which is supported by Venus from the 7th house and Rahu, showing tremendous personal popularity in career and society. Venus is here aspected by Saturn (role of service for others again). It is also interesting that Saturn (workers) rules 10th house of career, which could augment importance of these people to career. In Dashamsha, Saturn is in own sign in 5th house ("children" in career, i.e. followers and fans). And finally, important principle is that Venus makes Saturn exalted, which is another reason why workers and common people like Bruce's music and personality. As vargottama Moon's dispositor in navamsha is exalted Venus in 7th, his ability to exalt people does not loose with time.
3. He had Saturn dasha, Saturn bhukti from January 1987 to 1989. Saturn naturally inclining to sorrow and melancholy influenced his career (e.g.Tunnel of Love album) very strongly by emotional problems, because it is ruler of 10th and aspects it from 4th (emotions). His personal attitude is generally very separative. Saturn also aspects 1st house (self), Venus (relationships, music), Moon (other people generally), which brought another inclinations for separations. In Navamsha (relationships), Saturn is in 1st, ruling Rahu in 6th, aspects Venus in 7th. This shows very separative and individualistic personal attitude furthering end of relationship. Saturn is also here in stressing square-like 4/10 relationship with Jupiter in 4th, representing his 1st wife. Again, the principle that Venus exalts Saturn applies here, another woman (his later 2nd wife represented by exalted Venus ruling 2nd) could help him to overcome the problems. Saturn is ruler of 10th (career) aspected by Jupiter (ruler of 11th - groups), which is in 8th house of troubles. Jupiter is in own sign, which could make him strong, but he is dispositor of Rahu, which is highly inimical to Jupiter. Rahu brings more individual tendencies and possibility of dissolution. In Dashamsha (career chart), Saturn is in 5th house, aspecting 11th house of groups and collectives. In 11th house is also Mars, showing possible conflicts (and dislike of his fans). Saturn is also dispositor of Mercury (12th house ruler), which aspect Sun, ruler of 11th house. This shows possibility of broke up band as well. On 15th November 1989, he was running Saturn-Saturn-Jupiter dasha, and there was transiting Saturn and Venus conjunction in his 8th house opposed by Jupiter in 2nd. Venus rules 1st house (self, music), Saturn rules 10th (career, terminations), Jupiter rules 11th (groups). The reason for break up was that he was about going solo career. In July 2002 (time of Rising album issue), he was running Saturn-Rahu-Venus dasha. Rahu should give effects of 11th house (groups, gains) and Jupiter (transformation, resurrection of group, strong Jupiter in 8th house), furthermore, Rahu is exalted in Dashamsha, so this should be very successful on career level (multiple Grammies etc.). Saturn with Rahu was transiting his ascendent and transiting Jupiter was opposing his natal Jupiter. Note that Rahu and Jupiter have their role somewhat reversed in their periods. So, re-gain of group and new good beginning...
