Discussion about
Ernest Gallo, born 18 March 1909 at 7:15 PM in Jackson CA

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

Many of us remember when the Gallo brand was synonymous with cheap wine in green glass jugs with twist-off caps. Now E. & J. Gallo Winery produces many types of wine for every taste and budget. Ernest Gallo was largely responsible for the phenomenal business growth of the company. In the face of adversity and business challenges, he developed the business and marketing model, expanded and diversified its products, and kept adding to the bottom line. He lived what has been called the American dream: a self-made man without formal education who becomes overwhelmingly rich by his own enterprise, vision, and hard work, a success borne of tragedy and hardship. The story is complete with suicide, uxoricide, a family feud, estrangement and lawsuits, boycotts, and political payoffs. Let's look at Ernest Gallo's chart this week for clues to his extraordinary life.
 • Being successful in business involves, among other qualities, vision, leadership ability, an ability to know what the public wants, and a belief in oneself even in the face of adversity. Where in the chart do you see the capacity for the phenomenal business success that Ernest Gallo enjoyed?
 • Gallo was a tough, sometimes ruthless businessman. His firm survived union activity and boycotts, he cut off and sued his own brother, and often displayed his emotional nature via a fierce temper. Toughness, ruthlessness and temper are not the qualities we would normally associate with Pisces or an angular Neptune. Where in the chart do you see his forcefulness and ruthless aggression?
 • The Gallo family saga is the stuff of fiction, complete with murder, suicide and a fraternal feud. Where in Ernest's chart might you see the tragic end of his parents? What factors in the chart represent Julio and describe their relationship as brothers and business partners? And what factors signify the youngest brother Joseph and Ernest's estrangement from him?

1. Neptune in moon- ruled Cancer, conjunct the MC -intuitively understands what the public wants. Sun & Venus in 6th - loved to work, Saturn Aries in 6th - created the business structure, extremely hard working but capacity for ruthlessness. 2. Mars Uranus conjunction widely square Saturn - easily frustrated, explosive temper, expressed at home and work (4th & 6th) 3. Violent death - Father is represented by Neptune in 10th opposition Mars/Uranus in 4th. Estrangement - T square - Pluto (power struggles) opposition South Node in 3rd (siblings)sq. Venus in Pisces in 6th - power and jealousy

Let us never forget some of the most agressive creatures on the planet, aside from humans, inhabit the oceans and come under Nept/Pisces domain.
I find a Mars exalted in Capricorn conj Uran in the 4th hse is very driven to have its way and accomplish goals. These two squared to Saturn in Mars' sign makes for a very tough, hard-working, agressive person. Saturn tells us how he approaches his opposition (7th house). This entire config of Mars/Uran-Saturn brings the Asc/Dsc into play. very agressive & willful combination.
His Moon sits on Mdpt of Su/Mars and Ven/Uran thus a genuine ability to invent unique ways to reach the public, innovate production methods and reach people in positions of authority like Bob Dole. _

1.) " Where in the chart do you see the capacity for the phenomenal business success that Ernest Gallo enjoyed? .. an ability to know what the public wants, and a belief in oneself even in the face of adversity"
He has a quintile Yod between Jupiter/Pluto and Saturn with Pluto as the focal planet. Neptune angular and conjunct the MC also helps here; this shows the "phenomenal business success".
The Aquarius Moon - which rules the Midheaven - is trine Pluto and bi-quintile Neptune and the Cancer MC. This shows a powerful (Pluto) imagination (Neptune) in regards to the desires (Pluto) of the people (Moon). This also shows the belief in oneself despite adversity.
2.) ". Toughness, ruthlessness and temper are not the qualities we would normally associate with Pisces or an angular Neptune. Where in the chart do you see his forcefulness and ruthless aggression? "
He has Mars conjunct Uranus with Mars square Saturn in Aries. Saturn is also angular and conjunct the 7th house of partnerships. This is a prototype for "ruthless aggression" in regards to partners. The Moon trine Pluto illustrates the explosive temper.
3.) " What factors in the chart represent Julio and describe their relationship as brothers and business partners? And what factors signify the youngest brother Joseph and Ernest's estrangement from him? "
Natal third house ruler Jupiter is (house of siblings) is in opposition to natural third house ruler (Mercury) which also rules the youngest sibling. This opposition is in an unaspected duet and it clearly shows the estrangement and separation of the siblings.
Also; the Mars/Uranus conjunction in the fourth house of home - also angular - and square Saturn shows that he was the head of the household and he was not someone to be crossed about the family business.

I like this chart, its got oomph or as i prefer balls...
Saturn and the Moon are both singleton...Moon in Air and Saturn in fire..as rulers of the nadir and mc we see there stressed important in terms of the parents....notice also that Uranus/Mars lies on the Nadir, which in this case as in most cases in a males chart is the father...Uranus/Mars in Capricorn is authoritative and domineering as well as bizarre and reckless...at the nadir the home was capricornian and strict and the father violent..Neptune on the midheaven, the mother was long suffering and a martyr to the fathers violence...the rest of his life, gallo saw his mother as almost saint like and a victim (Neptune in Cancer makes sense since Cancer rules the mother, esp at the midheaven)..with dispositor moon singleton in Aquarius...almost as a bizarre event for a kind woman...the father of course is saturn, also singleton in Aries in its detriment...as selfish, self oriented, short tempered and get out of my way...the combination of all these elements shows the early life disaster..
Chart ruler is Venus in its exalt in Pisces, esp with neptune on the midheaven...shows the artist, the dreamer, the conosieur..in the 6th house he was coincidentally very detail oriented, very employee oriented..pisces on the 6th house and sun there, show that he was very involved in the day to day business of the business...pisces can be a difficult boss because as an idealist and perfectionist in terms of those ideals they can make their employees suffer terribly...he was not an easy boss..
Additionally, Saturn is very important...it hugs the 7th house of "others", is the ruler of the cardinal t-square and is in its detriment in Aries...this is the me first personality...my way or the highway..when it came to others he spared no feelings nor cared...bette davis has Saturn in Aries also, hers in the 6th house and when it came to employees and co-workers she could be as mean as it gets...Saturn in Aries is so difficult because the individual is so self centered he doesnt see nor does he care about others..
Mars and Saturn are in mutual reception by rulership but still in square along with Uranus joining Mars...esp at the angles this shows a very tough personality...very action oriented with conservative Saturn clashing against progeressive Mars...Uranus in Capricorn also squaring Saturn, shows old world quality vs. modern business and he struggled to combine the too when it came to his product...add idealistic neptune to the mix with dreamy pisces Sun and Venus as well as foward thinking moon in Aquarius and this was a very complex man..always reconciling the old with the new..old world italian quality with american business and fortune..
The problem with his brother is shown by Sagittarius ruling the 3rd house in its detriment in nit picky selfish virgo with venus in pisces, ruler of the 1st house in its exalt..his brother was probably selfish with a sense of entitlement as the result of the fathers spoiling..in the 11th house his life was of ideals and private hobbies...Ernest in the 6th house was a hard worker with low self esteem as the result of a sob and cruel father and an embrassing family scandal..he worked hard and resented his brothers "priviliged status" simply because he was his brother...he and his older brother fixed up the business and his younger one merely reaped the rewards...
This was a tough man...very insecure...very much a pefectionist...very scarred by family scandals and resentful of "privileged people" and vindictive of those he dislked or questioned authority...however as a man of ideals and passion he was also able to successfuly combine old world quality and new world business sense in a very traditional business..such is an excellent example of handling the cardinal t-square with Saturn...about knowing when to act (cardinal) with fiery enthusiasm and deterimination (Aries)..cardinal t-squares are all about timing..he had it

For those of us who use the 90 degree dial, will see easily that his Mercury is 45 degrees from the midpoint of his Mars/Uranus. He has to be an indepentant thinker who constantly gets new ideas as he works. Mars Uranus is usually self employed, or an idepentant contractor.
His Venus is midpoint his Jupiter/Sun. This planetary picture shows his financial success.

Most of his rash brutal hashness comes from his Mercury 45 to his Mars/Uranus midpoint. He can brutalise someone with his hands or his tongue. His Mars Neptune describes his deceptive and cheating qualities.

My delineation is based on Vedic astrology. 1) He was an excellent organizer, due to his Sun sharing 7th house position with Saturn and aspecting his Virgo Ascendant. His Ascendant in Virgo falls in Hasta nakshatra or Lunar mansion, known for helping people realize their goals. Hasta also gives strong leadership abilities, especially when its Lord, the Moon, resides in a business-oriented Capricorn in Dhanista, a nakshatra of wealth and materialism. Two excellent raja yogas, Lord of his 10H with Lord of his 9H, and Lord of his 10H with Lord of his Asc seal the deal for him, as they make him a highly successful individual. A number of Dhana or financial yogas, such as L9 w L2, L2 with Asc Lord, L11 in Dhanista nakshatra, a mutual aspect between the Moon and Jupiter all contribute to his financial success. Ascendant and 10H Lord Mercury in his 6H with Venus brings many reversals in his career, that have legal and financial repercussions as Venus rules his 9H and 2H. As a side note: Asc Lord Mercury's Lunar mansion symbolizes alcohol among other thing. 2 Asc Lord Mercury sits in his 6 house of illness on one hand, and enemies on the other, in Satabisha nakshatra, that made him a stubborn and arrogant man who thought he knew best. His Sun and Saturn in his 7H bring about problems in marriage, partnerships and with employes, resulting in animosity or litigation due to Saturn's rulership of his 6H, and Sun's rulership of his 12H. His saving grace comes from Saturn as the Lord of his 5H of luck and politicians, and mutual exchange of his Sun, the planet of politicians and authority, and Jupiter, placing each planet in its respective sign, thus not only giving him an escape route from his troubles but also giving him a strong position of a leader and manager. 3) A mutual aspect between Mars in his 4H and Saturn in his 7H is a textbook combination for the violence in his life. It touches his business partner and marriage by 7H position of Saturn, and his early home and mother due to Mars in his 4H. 4H of mother has Mars aspected again by Saturn, a sign of violence in her life. Lord 4H is in his 12H, further indicating the loss of his mother. His 9H of his father has North Node, and is aspected by Saturn; furthermore, his Sun is aspected by Mars, all indicationg violence and a violent end. South Node is in his 3H, showing stranded relations with a younger sibling, especially as its dispositor, Venus, is in his 6H of enemies and lawsuits, with L10 of his career, so their legal battles with his brother were clearly over his business empire.

Fascinating to see Neptune on the midheaven, normally associated with 'softer' professions and personalities, as well as the Pisces Sun, providing the focus for those seriously tough Saturn, Mars, Uranus drives. Not a fun man, but in a sense he made the best of a difficult chart by channelling his overloaded Neptune and Neptunian energies into wine. Which since Neptune is the Bacchalian god makes perfect sense. Also his health-conscious sixth house Sun prompted him to set up an alcohol abuse clinic which I gather does useful research work (though possibly also a smidgeon of PR advantage in there as well). With Mars opposing Neptune he'd do the marketing and pzazz side of the business well. Also only one fixed planet helped him change with the changing times. His cardinal planets gave him the drive and ideas to try new initiatives - out of the Depression into cheap wine. Out of cheap wine into fine in the 1980s. His mutables allowed him to fit in with market trends. Pisces has an odd reputation for being wimpy and ineffectual since it has produced huge businessmen like Rupert Murdoch and explorers who must be extremely tough. www.astrinform.com

Etta Your Vedic interpretation is so solid, that I have nothing left to say!
The Vedic chart literally shows the great wealth and family difficulties by house placement and the relationship of the house rulers. It is a text-book example that could easily be used in Vedic for chart delineation.
You've done a wonderful job of quickly and concisely showing those relationships without burdening the non-Vedic astrologer with the names of those yogas.
I hope that if there are terms that someone does not understand he or she will ask.
just in case...the term "yoga" simply means union of planets.

After answering the questions I was thinking about the rulership of wine and looking at this chart. It is very interesting; the planet that rules Wine (Venus) is exalted in Pisces and Trine the Midheaven (10th house cusp). The tenth house also is said to rule wine.
Neptune is conjunct the MC in the 10th house and also trine Venus. Neptune rules alcohol (and alcoholics) and Neptune disposits Venus as well. That the planet that rules alcohol is also trine Venus and conjunct the MC makes this theme of wine even stronger.

Much in this chart indicates a man whose presumed ruthlessness was more the result of being highly agitated and prone to sudden nervous bouts. There is much, though, that points to a man who wants power, and will get it. You don't combine saturn, pluto, and jupiter-in virgo, the sign of con men- in the 5h without getting a climber. The sublimate and release aspects of this chart are very contrarian. A 'difficult' chart. I wonder at his sense of humour. To live that long, he must have had a considerably developed one, though perhaps quite hidden from all but a few. Orcus is conjunct saturn and descendent very closely, thus involved with pluto and jupiter as well. This is a very grim combination, and his nervousness may have spilled over into nastiness with it, or a very black sense of humour. Aries is very territorial, and with gemini and virgo involved, the law was, in his mind, beneath him.

the implications of saturn in aries in the 7th house are fun to consider. i think saturn is most informative here as it is very central to this chart for numerous reasons as well as being a part of 2 important planetary pictures, and a focal point for 1 of them which strongly involves the angles... he was pioneering, adventurous, had a fierce temper, was quite forceful, a self made man- all aries traits, and a leader of a hugely successful company, hard working, responsible, disciplined, very determined and ruthless which one could associate with a focalized saturn. perhaps the ruthlessness is more a saturn in aries quality where you cut out everything to get what your self centered ambitions want. or perhaps the mutual reception between mars and saturn which is like a time share, could explain the ruthlessness. they form a very strong duo for better or worse as a result of their mutual reception.
i think of saturn in aries as a loner, but he was able to work with his saturn very successfully perhaps due in part to the quintile focus on pluto from saturn/jupiter. this planetary picture seems very productive with potential to be hugely successful(classic jupiter/pluto keywords), financially anyway- in his life.. pluto rules the 2nd, while jupiter rules the 3rd and so he makes billions with a brother. interesting.
i believe pluto in gemini the sign of siblings, also says something of his relationship to his brothers. he was able to hold a steady business relationship with his brother julio for the duration of his life - saturn in the 7th (commitment in business relationship) to pluto/gemini (brother) in 9th anyone? pluto in gemini seems to have had something important to say about his relationship with the younger brother as well, who he was involved in litigation with over the gallo name.. tearing apart a family for financial reasons perhaps when the topic of issue is who gets to use a name that is mutually shared..
perhaps the conflict ernest felt towards family/business matters is more described in the 4th/10th house oppositions.. he may have thought it necessary to chose a path of conflict resolution (saturn in 7th idea) through the saturn which appears rather cold or ruthless to an outsider especially in the sign aries, but made sense to him for numerous reasons too complex for us to perhaps know or understand. it is interesting to note how not only does saturn have a few creative outlets via a couple of 5th harmonic aspects, but the mars/neptune opposition does as well to the 2 lights - sun and moon. so the mutual reception planets saturn/mars are further strengthened with the 5th harmonic outlets which allow him to turn a lot of tension and ambition into a rich and rewarding business.
i used to have a friend with this sun/moon combo. it is a real dreamer combo. he died of an overdose of drugs many years ago, not knowing what he was getting himself into. i think ernest had so much drive and ambition, the dreaming he did was all put to very practical purposes as exampled in his life.. thanks for the study - a good chart to work with for me personally.

It won't surprise anyone on this forum when I point out that Ernest Gallo's chart is a perfect example of a late tropical Sun degree acting more like the following sign, Aries. If we gave Gallo's characteristics to almost any tropical astrologer and asked him/her whether Gallo had his Sun in Pisces or Aries, Aries would be the answer. Considering Margorie Orr's comments about Neptune, I'm not sure that Neptune is necessarily associated with the softer professions. The god Neptune was anything but peaceful and soft. (And mystics, said to come under Neptune, are generally highly passionate about their relationship with God.)
It's Neptune's passionate and daredevil nature, and Jupiter's tendency to over-confidence and arrogance that explain the traits of sidereal Pisces (rather than the Mars trait explanation for tropical Aries). The early degrees of sidereal Pisces occur in the late degrees of tropical Pisces, and this is the sidereal reason that late tropical Pisceans often don't seem like Pisces.
Of course Gallo has a powerful angular Mars, which would support his solar traits. According to Vedic astrology Mars isn't happy in the 4th house, since he is most productive in the 10th (dig bala). So if we call this 4th house Mars a fallen Mars because it's in Cancer's natural house, we might expect a more negative expression of Mars in shows of temper and ruthless behavior. Of course Mars with Uranus can indicate a volatile temperament. This would be true in any zodiac. Since alcohol existed long before the discovery of Neptune, I doubt that Neptune rules alcohol. Wine is a liquid, however, and some ancients placed wine under Venus, a watery planet associated with pleasure. Various ancient authors placed drunkenness under the Moon, Venus or Mars.
It's interesting that Mercury, the sidereal ascendant lord and 10th lord of career is conjunct Fomalhaut, the star in the mouth of the southern fish into which Aquarius pours his urn of water. Not a bad symbol for a man who revolutionalized the wine industry in America!

A good explanation for the aggressiveness and 'fiery' nature of sidereal Pisces. And Neptune (Poseidon) himself was aggressive, riding swiftly over the waves conquering wherever he chose.
Poseidon was recognized as the disobedient and rebellious god who opposed the laws laid down by Zeus and the Olympian council. These traits are often reflected in sidereal Pisces, which can be extremely freedom-loving. The planet Neptune has broader meanings than its sign.

While I did attribute wine to Venus in a previous post I just thought that you might want to know that most modern astrologers have made many, many associations to the trans-Saturn planets and rulership of many things.
Esteemed astrologer Liz Greene wrote an entire book on Neptune and its place in astrology. Neptune has long been associated by modern astrologers with alcoholism and addictions of all kinds; Just as Pluto has been associated with sex, money and power; and Uranus associates with electricity, technology and revolutions.
Now all of these things existed before the trans-Saturn planets were discovered and that does nothing to take away from what astrologers have associated them with since their discovery.
Of course the ancients couldn't associate rulership to planets that they didn't knew existed!? Astrology is a dynamic and evolving art/science and new things are being learned and added to its vocabulary all the time. Just because something isn't ancient doesn't mean it doesn't work.
Therese wrote: "A good explanation for the aggressiveness and 'fiery' nature of sidereal Pisces. And Neptune (Poseidon) himself was aggressive, riding swiftly over the waves conquering wherever he chose."
Or just a good description of Neptune (Poseidon) himself; and evidence of why Neptune has been offered as the modern ruler of Pisces; and why some tropical Pisces people can exhibit these characteristics. Of course you have to look at a particular Pisces person's entire chart to see why they might exhibit an "aggressiveness and 'fiery' nature."
A tropical Pisces with Aries rising, Mars conjunct an angle, Jupiter in Aries. Mars conjunct Jupiter or Neptune would also exhibit these characteristics in the tropical zodiac.
Cheers.

I would also like to add that Mars is exalted in Capricorn conjunct an angle, in a grand cross with all of the angles, in mutual reception with its dispositor (Saturn) and in an almost exact quintile to the Sun.
Not to mention Mars is the most dignified planet in this chart with an essential dignity score of +10 while the Sun is the least dignified planet here. When the Sun is weak by dignity it is very easily influenced and even dominated by a planet as strong as Mars is in this chart.
Also; Mars is in a Cardinal opposition to an angular Neptune and trine Jupiter; so both dispositors of the Sun are in strong and direct contact with Mars.
So yes this is a classic example of a chart with a tropical Pisces Sun exhibiting strong Martial traits due to the strength and emphasis of Mars and its direct contact with the Sun, angles and both dispositors of the Pisces Sun as well as its strength by dignity.

A Few things...
Wine is a liquid that causes merriness...Traditionally, that is Sagittarian and Jupiterian..as such I think both Jupiter and Neptune as well as Sagittarius and Pisces have something to do with wine..Neptune on the midheaven is certainly telling and excellent for a wine maker...but Jupiter does have a traditional baring on it...The strong presence of pisces in the 6th house of work and daily activities and Jupiter in the 11th house of hobbies also adds to a strong emphasis on wine...all these factors together show someone who made wine his life
Second I was wondering if anyone has the birth time of Don Imus, recently bealeagured talk show host...I get a birthdate of July 23 1940 from astrotheme and Wikipedia but no time...anyone?
