Discussion about
William Rehnquist, born 1 October 1924 at 11:32 AM in Milwaukee WI

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

William H. Rehnquist, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has died. There are many stories about the man, both on and off the bench, including one that tells of his changing his middle name to suit a numerologist's advice. His lengthy time on the bench saw many changes in the United States, politically, technologically and culturally. Let's have a look at his chart to discuss some of what we saw in his years on the Supreme Court:
• Rehnquist was noted for consistency both in deciding the large number of cases he heard and in the number of cases rejected. In her New York Times report,* Supreme Court analyst Linda Greenhouse cited a 1976 article in the Harvard Law Review by Professor David Shapiro in which Shapiro categorized Rehnquist's judicial philosophy in the following way:

• Conflicts between the individual and the government should be resolved against the individual.
• Conflicts between state and federal authority should be resolved in favor of the states.
• Questions of the exercise of federal jurisdiction should be resolved against such exercise.
Where in Rehnquist's chart do you see consistency in his judicial views? Is there room in Rehnquist's chart for inconsistency?
• Where in the chart are the serious, efficient, testy jurist and the playful, humorous, mild-tempered man who enjoys theatricals, sing-alongs, good-natured gambling and serious poker-playing?
• Where in the chart do we see the law career, as an attorney and later Supreme Court Justice? Using the Equal House System, we can easily see where the Midheaven of a chart falls in relationship to the Ascendant. In Rehnquist's case, the MC is in the 10th house but 11th sign. What does this placement tell us about his career, his vocation, his standing in society?
• *"William H. Rehnquist, Architect of Conservative Court, Dies at 80," by Linda Greenhouse, New York Times, September 5, 2005.

1.) Where in Rehnquist's chart do you see consistency in his judicial views? Is there room in Rehnquist's chart for inconsistency?
With a Libra Sun conjunct the Midheaven and Jupiter; ruler of the Ascendant in its own sign (Sagittarius) conjunct the ASC you have a perfect chart for a judge, especially a prominent judge. That both the Sun and Jupiter are the most angular planets shows the consistency of his views both personally (ASC) and to the public at large (MC).
The potential for inconsistency can be seen in the T-Square with a Mercury/Uranus opposition and Jupiter as focal planet. Mars is in quincunx to Mercury also, which has the potential to be erratic. However his angular Sun and Jupiter probably reign in this tendency.
2.) Where in the chart are the serious, efficient, testy jurist and the playful, humorous, mild-tempered man who enjoys theatricals, sing-alongs, good-natured gambling and serious poker-playing?
The Sun is Square Pluto and the Moon is trine Pluto and in mutual reception with it as well. This can show an intensity and seriousness that can be very personal. Mercury in its rule (Virgo) is the most dignified planet and is Square to Jupiter in its rulership as well. Saturn in Scorpio in the tenth further shows the seriousness. The Scorpio Moon shows the testiness.
Jupiter can show itself as very principled, especially in square to Mercury in Virgo; A perfectionism (Mercury/Virgo) based on principle (Jupiter/Sag) that because of the square, and Jupiter being conjunct the ASC (along with the Pluto Sun/Moon contacts) can produce one who may be obsessive about order in his immediate environment. Jupiter/Sag can also be very playful and fun loving. Venus in Leo shows the theatric flair and love of singing. Venus in opposition to Mars shows one who likes to compete (Polarize) and that Venus rules the 5th house of gambling and entertaining further emphasizes this love of games and fun.
3.) Where in the chart do we see the law career, as an attorney and later Supreme Court Justice? Using the Equal House System, we can easily see where the Midheaven of a chart falls in relationship to the Ascendant. In Rehnquist's case, the MC is in the 10th house but 11th sign. The aforementioned Jupiter conjunct ASC along with a tenth house Sun conjunct the MC, combined with the ruler of the ninth (Mercury) in the ninth house of law, and also in its rulership (Virgo) as well as being the most dignified planet, gives you the successful and prominent Law career. Saturn in Scorpio in the tenth further emphasizes this theme.
The MC is in the 10th house but the 11th sign (along with Saturn also in the 10th house and 11th sign) shows his stature as an authority in status (10th house) as well as in his effect upon the collective as a whole (11th house). Another perfect placement for a Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Regarding Rehnquist's "inconsistencies" see:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/11/weekinreview/11lipt.html
concerning when he had to disown his memos at his judicial nomination hearing in 1972..He was also part of early Republican effort to suppress minority voting by challenging minorities' voting rights in Phoenix in the 1960's.

With 5 planets and NN in fixed (productive) signs stability and consistency would be in his nature. Love of games and playfulness could be explained by his Neptune and Venus in Leo (to celebrate) planets. His 10th house Libra (to balance) sun could make him a natural for the law and justice career.

Well Mr. I am going to analyze the Jurist as if it did not have read your small biography. 1° your regent , Júpiter, this very strong in the 1° marries and in your domiciliate. thence he have his own philosophy and conviction in pre concept form. your regent is defied and Uranus challenge, administration, social and rebellious groups, still supplies an unexpected attitudes element. I classify in sintese this personality as A filosofo, mediador and transformer, Sagitário,Libra and Scorpion. The Sun in the 10° generally carries for projection positions. in the 11° , the social life. that Sun receives Plutão's Quadrature, I admire me of do not have received no your attempt life !! Still with the Moon going to quadrature for Mars. Loss of the mother......Or attempt when dislocating itself, it marries 3. Or accidents. The fact of being playful is a characteristic of a Júpiter in the 1°, the abuses and confiânça excess. Mars opposite for netuno is a very negative aspect for serf tried. I would tell that it is a very challenging map and full of ocorrencias reveals an inundation life of cases . this is my opinion.
