Discussion about
Carlos Santana, born 20 July 1947 at 02:00 AM in Autlan De Navarro

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

 • What aspects in his chart are being touched off now to bring him back into the limelight? Can you track any connection between his comeback now and his Woodstock breakthrough in the summer of 1969?
 • Philanthropy plays a major role in Carlos's life. Click on the link to his web page that details the projects under his Milagro (miracle) foundation for the benefit of children around the world. Where is philanthropy written in his chart?
 • Santana is thoroughly international in his music and philanthropy. Yet his ninth house is empty and he has nothing in Sagittarius. Where does his internationalism come from?

Cusp of 6th house of work is ruled by Libra, the ruler of which, Venus, is in the 2nd house, pointing to money-making ability. Neptune in the 5th suggests artistry and the ruler of Virgo, Mercury is in the 2nd also so the 5th house cusp's ruler points to perfectionism at his trade as well as a knowledge of how to apply his musical talents in a productive way. There are no planets in the 10th but its ruler Uranus is in the 2nd so cash seems to come out of nowhere. He's lucky to have a Cancer stellium which lends much to his musical, artistic nature... The 2nd house is ruled by Gemini so he's always got a good idea to make money. His dad was smart too. I see a stellium in Leo so of course he's a good performer and actor and can entertain. Pluto in the 3rd indicates a penetrating and observant mind... Taurus ascendant makes for a natural performer and bright outlook on life. No planets in the 12th but the ruler of that house is in the outgoing 5th house of performing so he enjoys playing to large crowds - that's where he feels most comfortable and has his most spiritual experiences. Does he drink and drug a little though? Scorpio's the descendent so he is surely around a lot of people who do no matter if he does or does not. Sage rules the empty 8th house and is on its cusp. Jupiter gives a lucky feel to his work arena in the 6th to support. Aquarius MC should show he always tries to be open minded and is a humanitarian - very much so - and willing to try anything new. He's a momma's boy - the moon so close to the IC. But growing up from a strong base (Pluto) surrounded by a communicative, well-traveled father and a disciplined structure (Saturn) are good company for his IC. As Leo is on the IC he may have been a great performer in a past life, or lives as well. In private he may have a hot temper (Aries rules the 12th house) and enjoys a spiritual life. Cancer rules the 3rd: surrounded by sensitive yet worrywart friends and he is very sensitive and was probably highly influenced by his mother in his choice of occupation. Virgo rules the 5th: very perfectionistic with his job and his talent. Always trying to do better. Mars in the 1st indicates he is very energetic and driven. Saturn in Leo in the 3rd means he is serious about performing in the spotlight; it's something he loves to do. Jupiter in Scorpio seems kind of murky though... Mars in Gemini: it doesn't get better than that.

The internationalism of Santana comes from his Sagittarius south node in his angular 7th house. The Moon's south node often functions as a second sun sign in terms of strength, I believe, and certainly explains the nature of one's inborn gifts. Through the development of technical skill and media channels (Gemini north node), he has been able to bring his music to the masses.

Using the Systems Approach to Vedic Astrology, with equal house/equal sign and an ayanamsa of 23:07:14, I would say there is a distinct commonality between the Summer of '69 and the current period. He has Aries rising, with the 9th lord (Jupiter), residing in Libra. It is no wonder that he has such musical abilities - especially when one considers that Jupiter, the "guru" planet, aspects both his natal Mercury and Venus within the 3rd house (containing Gemini). As a consequence, he became a "guru" of the guitar and musical ability. Interestingly, under the vimshottari dasa, he was in a Ven-Mer period in '69, and he is currently in a Rah-Jup period. Notice that the first period (Ven-Mer) accents the natal aspect of Jupiter upon both period lords, while the latter period (Rah-Jup) also accents, once again, the aspect of Jupiter upon both Venus and Mercury. So, under Vedic astrology, it is of no surprise that these two periods would bring such success. This is especially true of the Rah-Jup period, since Rahu is known for bringing great material gains and successes - especially when exalted - as is the case here. As far as the comment about the internationalism and the lack of 9th house and Sagittarius placements, that is only true in western astrology. Under the Vedic system, Jupiter is lord of Carlos' 9th house, as well as Sagittarius. So, the same Jupiter aspect, from the 7th, upon both Venus and Mercury in the 3rd, would equally explain both his musical abilities and his international philanthropic endeavors/successes.

With Saturn and Pluto on his Sun/Moon midpoint, Carlos Santana would be a "disciplined alchemist" no matter what he'd try. Though there is no visible aspect between his Venus and Uranus, as there is with other rock musicians and pop stars of more than one generation (Elvis, George Harrison, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, and Britney Spears), his Sun is on the Venus/Uranus midpoint.
While some would claim there is "nothing" in either Sagittarius (Tropical or Sidereal) or in Carlos' ninth house (I disagree - Black Moon Lillith isn't "nothing"), Carlos has Jupiter, Sagittarius' ruler, about five degrees below the Descendant, making it a very strong force in his chart.
I'll close with some qualified remarks about Santana's 1999 Sidereal Solar Return. He has a couple of almost partile trines - Sun and Chiron (healing?) and Venus and Jupiter (arts and honors).

First of all, I'm sure the birth time for Santana is slightly wrong. The 2:00 time gives a chart with the last degree of Sidereal Aries (Krishnamurti ayanamsa) on the Ascendant. The navamsa (9th harmonic sub-chart) for this time is all wrong: Sagittarius is on the ascendant with Saturn and Pluto. From 2:03 to 2:15 the navamsa chart changes to a Capricorn ascendant (similar to Tropical Aquarius) with Uranus (vibrations of music) in Libra in 10th opposing Venus in the 4th. I cast a chart for a 2:06 time of birth, to move the natal ascendant into 45 minutes of Taurus. This isn't a precise to-the-minute rectification, however.
I'm not tuned to the popular music scene, so I checked out two Santana interviews on the net. What a revelation! The brief biography given on this site doesn't scratch the surface of this dedicated, unusual man. Santana is deeply spiritual, and meditates daily. The inspiration for his music comes from spiritual realms and from the women in his life. Now we know why Uranus (the psychic planet) is in such a prominent position in the navamsa chart. An angular navamsa Venus speaks for itself. Santana's early sexual abuse by an American is also shown in the navamsa: Mars in the 7th house of sex (in the ancient Western and Jyotish systems) is fallen in Cancer in the 7th.
Santana's interest in the children of the world and his incredible creative output is also in the navamsa: Moon-Jupiter-Mercury-Neptune in the 5th house in Venus-ruled Taurus (the sign of the throat and voice). The angular Venus disposits these planets.
Well, yes, Carlos Santana does have a natal chart! Since a time of birth after 2:03 gives a Taurus ascendant, the equal house lords will be the same in the Sidereal and Tropical charts. The Taurus stellium from the navamsa falls on the natal ascendant. Here, I think, is the source of Santana's philanthropy: A generous Moon-Jupiter in a Venus-ruled sign is an innate part of his nature.
With a Taurus ascendant, the Moon is on the 4th cusp, a potent testimony to the influence of women (sisters, mother, wife) in Santana's life, and to his own self-admitted comfort with his inner feminine self. Jupiter is currently in trine to the angular Moon, which is partly why he is receiving honors now. The natal chart has some powerful yogas for creative fame, as we might expect. The ascendant lord, Venus, joins the 5th (house of creative effort) in the 3rd (Indian equal) house of the arts (use of hands and arms). The Cancer Sun is also in this house. The 9th lord (house of elevated position) Saturn joins the Sun, the benefic 4th lord in the 3rd sign. Jupiter (the masses) is angular in the 7th in the equal house chart.
The Moon's north node (Rahu) is conjunct the Taurus ascendant, another example of how Rahu can raise a person to the heights of fame. Mars, the 7th lord, is conjunct Rahu in the 1st house of early life, a general suggestion of something gone wrong sexually. The nodes on the 1st-7th house axis will usually point to some irregularity in regard to sex or relationships.
Carlos Santana uplifts everyone he touches. He could be said to have a mission of bring light and hope to the world. This is why Uranus (musical vibrations and contact with psychic realms) the co-10th lord, is in Gemini (sidereally, the arts) with the powerful combination of Venus and Mercury. The 10th house is brought together with the Ascendant (Venus) and the 5th (creativity) and 2nd (voice) lord, Mercury, in the house of the arts (3rd). The spiritual Neptune itself is in the 5th.
But it's the navamsa chart that pulls it all together. Capricorn rises for only 12 minutes while the Moon is exalted in Taurus next to Jupiter, which joins Mercury and Neptune in the 5th. When Capricorn next comes to the navamsa ascendant, the Moon will have moved on, and the other planets will have shifted as well. What a sparkling chart to study after the darkness of Hitler's chart!
P.S. Santana's Woodstock breakthrough and his current comeback: In the summer of 1969 Santana was running his Venus major/Mercury minor Dasa period. Venus (1st lord) and Mercury (2nd and 5th lord) is a powerful yoga for recognition in his chart. Also Saturn, lord of 9 and 10, is in Mercury's lunar mansion, so these houses produced their fruit at that time.
Now Santana is running Rahu's major period and Jupiter's minor period. Rahu is prominent in the 1st while Jupiter is prominent in the 7th. But the similarity is there because the Venus/Mercury conjunction is in Jupiter's lunar mansion. When a planet is activated during a Dasa period, it will bring the results of any planets in its lunar mansions. Jupiter itself is in its own lunar mansion. But Jupiter is lord of the 8th. This might bring a death experience into Santana's life.

 • In the limelight? T. Uranus is in Carlos's tenth house, trining his natal Neptune in the fifth house, which in turn natally trines his venus (arts) conj. Merc (communication) in his second house. The connection to 1969 and 1999 is again Uranus. In 1969 Uranus was in Libra (with Jupiter) and was most likely in orb to his natal neptune. Natal neptune is in trine to his natal MC, as it is to his natal mars in gemini, this forms a grand trine in air.
 • Philanthropy? Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius is in his sixth house of work and service in Scorpio, trined to his venus/mercury in Cancer. Therefore the interest in nurturing and service to others (children) using the gains from his work. Jupiter is in Scorpio, and his eighth house is in Sagittarius, this link would show his philanthropic behavior as well.
 • Internationalism? His international appeal and philanthropy once again come from a combination of the two things I wrote about above.

Neptune is natally in his fifth house of creativity, in Libra giving him a boost in the arts trined to mars in his first house shows his music will know no borders (neptune can't handle restrictions or borders). Gemini mars in the first house gives him his great ability to communicate to mass audiences, and completing the grand trine to the MC... Aquarius is the sign of humanity, so the planets trining the MC will fuel his appeal to people of all backgrounds.
Carlos Santana's artistic talent, musical ability, philanthropy, internationalism, and sexual abuse all appear quite clearly in his Vedic chart.
Ascendant lord Mars is in sidereal Taurus, a sign of Venus, the planet of art. Mars is in the lunar mansion of Rohini (10-00 - 23-00 Taurus), which is the most artistically inclined of all the lunar mansions. Mars, the planet of action and energy, is in mutual aspect with the North node of the Moon (Rahu), the planet of outer-worldly ambition and manual dexterity (i.e. guitar playing), in the second house of the chart, which rules the voice in Vedic astrology.
The 3rd house, which rules expression and performance, has Venus and Mercury, two mutual great friends, in Gemini, the sign of communication, where they are both very strong. Mercury itself governs communication and Venus, the lord of the second house of voice, is the planet of artistic expression. The 3rd house is completely free from affliction, contains only benefic planets, and is aspected only by a benefic planet (Jupiter) - a recipe for certain success in Vedic astrology. Both Mercury and Venus are in the lunar mansion of Punarvasu, (20-00 Gemini - 3-20 Cancer) which is noted for poetry and philosophy (i.e. song-writing). To add emotion to this mix, the Moon, the planet of the emotions, is in the 5th house of intelligence and creativity in Leo, the sign of the Sun (a friend of the Moon), which is noted for desire for acclaim.
In Vedic astrology, the 12th house rules philanthropy, which is a form of expenditure. The 12th lord is Jupiter, the planet of generosity, which sits unafflicted in the 7th house (others), and fully aspects the 1st house (the native). Jupiter is in the lunar mansion of Vishakha (20-00 Libra - 3-20 Scorpio), which is primarily noted for being devoted to the pursuit of a goal which, due to Jupiter's inherent nature and 12th house lordship, is philanthropy. To reinforce this tendency, ascendant lord Mars is in the lunar mansion of Rohini, which has as one of its primary characteristics a desire to help or please others.
In the sidereal zodiac, the 9th house of foreign travel and internationalism is, in fact, Sagittarius which is ruled by Jupiter, who is also lord of the 12th house of emigration. The aspect of Jupiter to the 1st house (the native) strongly indicates both his living in a country other than the one where he was born, and an interest in knowledge or experience of other cultures.
The sexual abuse he suffered is a consequence of the fact that ascendant lord Mars is aspected by Ketu, the South node of the Moon, which rules traumatic events and sits in the sidereal sign of Scorpio (sexuality) where he is exalted (powerful). Ketu is in the 8th house which has to do with both traumatic events and sexuality, doubly reinforcing these tendencies. The abuse happened during the life cycle or Dasha of Venus / Mars, both of which are concerned with sexuality.
His meteoric rise to fame at Woodstock happened while he was in the Dasha of Venus / Mercury, both of whom are very strong and unafflicted in the 3rd house of expression and performance. His current success is happening in a Rahu / Jupiter cycle. Rahu, which is noted for outer- worldly ambition and accomplishment is in mutual aspect with Mars, the 1st lord. Benefic and unafflicted Jupiter is the lord of the very auspicious 9th house and aspects the 1st house (Aries) where he is currently transiting with Saturn, the lord of the 10th house of career. Saturn in the natal chart forms a Royal Yoga with the Sun (the 5th lord) in the 4th house, from where he fully aspects both the 10th and 1st houses. The transit of Jupiter and Saturn in the first house in Aries thus trigger the 1st house aspects of both natal planets. Thus the earlier success seems to be a 3rd house event, while the current success is more of a 1st / 9th / 10th house event. Jupiter seems to be the only common element in both cases.

In 1969 Santana experienced five Solar Arcs, two involving Jupiter, Sun=Jupiter, MC=Jupiter, and three involving Mercury, Pluto=Mercury, ASC=Mercury, and Mercury=Uranus. These arcs strongly suggest a time of reward, of heightened communications, and of recognition.
Late 1999 again brought two key Jupiter-connected Solar Arcs, Pluto=Jupiter on 10/21/99 and ASC=Jupiter on 12/29/99. Transiting Pluto trined his Sun/Moon midpoint on 1/19/00. Once again the Jupiter Arcs suggest a time of success, expansion, and recognition.
It is also interesting to note that Santana began to seriously address the significant unfinished business from early childhood (reflected in the pronounced Northern Hemisphere emphasis) just following his accumulated Solar Arc semi-square on May 26, 1994, and when transiting Uranus was opposing his Sun (Jan-Oct of 1995). The Solar Arc semi-square typically correlates to a significant change in the way one sees oneself and the world around one.
With respect to philanthropy, Santana's Cancer Sun is peregrine (no Ptolemaic aspect to another planet), making his powerful energy to create security, especially in the home, run away with his personality. Note that his charitable works focus on children.. It is also consistent with Aquarius on his MC, suggesting that he wants his vocation to be tied to benefiting others. Finally, the conjunction of Venus and Mercury in Cancer gives him a strong idealism, both as a defense mechanism to the early childhood trauma, and as a positive factor boosting his philanthropic pursuits.

On the day Carlos Santana swept the Grammys, 2/23/2000, his Tertiary progressed MC was exactly conjunct his natal Venus - "recognition came to him": Venus rules the Asc, and the 6th house of work. You've got to hand it to this symbolism! Also, Tr Sat was square his natal MC on 1/24/2000, setting the stage for the recognition.
