Discussion about
Diane Keaton, born 5 January 1946 at 02:49 AM in Los Angeles CA

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

Recently, it seems the Academy has been giving preference to actresses who have made major shifts in their personality and body type to play a role. We're going to take a break from politics and study the chart of an actress who always seems to bring a smile of familiarity. No matter how much she changes, she always looks like a version of Annie Hall.
This quintessential up-tight WASP has spent a lifetime loosening up. At the beginning of her career she was the only girl who did not take off her clothes in the Broadway musical "Hair"; now she is one of the few major actresses over 50 to do a nude scene. Backstage at the Golden Globe awards, she claimed, "I feel like an advocate for the fact that older people are still around and they can be funny if they have good material and they can be in love. Blah, blah, what am I talking about? Like I [would] know."
What Do You Think?

 • Where does her ditzy persona show up in her chart? Or does it?
 • Why has she consistently been with unavailable men?
 • How do you interpret the Neptune square to her Sun-Venus conjunction?

1. Where does her ditzy persona show up in her chart? Or does it?
Maybe the Moon in Aquarius - confusing the unusual presentation, personality for ditzy (I don't believe there's anything ditzy about her at all - she's just a person who walks to the beat of her drummer)
Why has she consistently been with unavailable men?
Well most obviously - there is the partile square between Venus (her 7th house ruler) and Neptune (her 5th house ruler!). Romantic idealism, infatuations, and love relationships resulting from freindships or converting to frienships (Ruler of the 5th in the 11th) But there are other challenging aspects that express this issue:
Venus Quindecile (165 degree of obsession and separation) Saturn
Mars conjunct Saturn square Jupiter - attraction to men who are risktakers but also possibly (emotionally - Saturn in Cancer) rejecting. The Sun also squares (wider) Neptune - attraction tob artists but also to men who disappear, have trouble committing.
and Of cousre there is Uranus in the 7th- near the 8th - partners (and sexual partners) that involve a lot of freedom - or rather her own need for freedomn in 1:1 relationships - attacted to unsual people, unions
How do you interpret the Neptune square to her Sun-Venus conjunction?
Strong idealism, artistic expression talent - atraction to beauty. With the Sun ruling the 10th - this directoy impacts her choice of careers and withthe 5th -10th - 7th houses tied togther . Creative partnerships that serve the career - and hasn't that been true!

Not only the Neptune square to her Sun/Venus conjunction...but that Venus/Neptune square also makes her idealistic and often confused in terms of her relationship choices, which could partially explain her hooking-up with unavilable men...as well as her odd fashion choices!
Ditzy? Her Aqua Moon is in the third house, ruled by Saturn...opposite Pluto in Leo in the 11th, ruled by Cancer. Could be unresolved, low-self esteem issues stemming from childhood and her father concerning her femininity make her appear more "ditzy" than she actually is. A strong, strange fashion sense, but also a tendency to "cover up" and "conceal" her body head to toe.

Oh that Uranus stuck in the relationship sector taste for the forbidden.
Too much emphasis on the 9th house further love of adventure and the unconventional!
As if all this was not enough drama and confusion that Neptune aspects uncomfortably with both Venus and Sun making her further hard to pin down!

1. I tend to associate 'ditzy'-ness with those who seek to gain handouts, assistance, favors, etc by playing 'dumb'...when in fact they can be especially crafty. If Dianne is in any way 'ditzy', it probably comes from her strong Air grand trine, of which part is the Moon, which is in her 3rd House. She can play dumb if she wants to. The Air signs, and the 3rd house, are about 'convenience', being able to nimbly put things together, communication skills--she is a sharp tack. But this can be turned around to make others think that they are the smart ones, but end up doing tons of things for her. 2. Consistent relationship patterns are certainly here...she has Venus, ruler of her 7th House, and of Libra, the natural 7th House, conjunct the Sun in Capricorn, and her man Mars in the 9th House, conjunct Saturn in Cancer...Saturn and Capricorn both indicate very high standards, which can translate to material and status demands...9th House is the fantastical and farfetched...perhaps most important is the fact of Neptune, ruler of her romance 5th being in square to Venus, and to the Sun(ruler of the natural 5th, Leo)...it is an exact square...perhaps she is repeating a pattern that she learned from her parents...her relationship choices are being dictated by old memories, perhaps a desire to reconcile the past in some way...but the effect is encountering the same situations over and over again, because the rational mind tends to approach the surface issues, and not treat the ones on the inside, which tend to bring the situation up again... 3. This is an extremely sensitive lady...many of her actions and choices may be dictated by phobias, strange eccentricities, memories and feelings that only she could understand or fathom...these psychological roadblocks can easily dead-end her career(the Sun rules her 10th House) and her relationships (Venus). She can give inappropriate emotional interpretations to situations that anything but emotional.

First of all, equal houses are the pinnacle of naivete. They do have some use in career readings, but they are a disservice to any serious astrologer!
1. I would not call Diane ditzy in any way, shape, or form. There is always going to be some kind of conflict between the staid and the avant-garde when a chart contains both strong Capricorn & Aquarius influences. Such a conflict may be seen as ditziness.
2. As someone who has Uranus in the 7th myself, I can assure anyone that Uranus's house position is extremely contradictory, and it can overrule all kinds of traditional meanings. Also, anywhere Taurus is found in the chart can indicate a blind spot that the client might be totally unaware of. So Diane just might not realize how she is perceived. (I actually fell in love with Diane Keaton in a 1971 deodorant commercial before she ever became famous!!!)
3. She is extremely idealistic and may be out-of-touch or perfectionistic, accordingly.

As a serious astrologer, and former user of Placidus houses for years, I take exception to the remark that 'Equal Houses are the pinnacle of naivete and a disservice to any serious astrologer'. Everyone has a right to their opinion, however, but the author of that comment gives no explanation whatever to back this claim and it comes off as a hit-and-run tactic. Equal Houses may SEEM juvenile, but the logic behind them is very clear. They are based on the Ascendant, and each House perfectly(in my mind) represents its domain through its aspect relationship to the Ascendant. Very simple. No need to complicate things. I think many of the other serious astrologers who continually contribute to this board would agree.

1. "ditzy" -- not sure about this one. The dictionary defines it as "silly or scatterbrained" but she seems more like a consummate actress, that is, her ditziness is an act. Her public persona is shown by the Leo MC, ruled by her Capricorn Sun, suggesting that she knows exactly what she is doing.
2. Unavailable men. Venus rules her 7th of partners and is square to Neptune, so that she overidealizes men and deceives herself into thinking they are more than they appear to be. The Venus/Sun conjunction is opposite Saturn, putting a damper on her love life. The Aquarius Moon is Almuten of her Taurus 7th Cusp. Moon in Aquarius can be a bit detached and attract unusual partners, especially since both Moon and Venus are contraparallel Uranus in her chart. Moon is also trine both Uranus and Neptune, attracting these types of men into her life.
3. Neptune Square Venus/Sun. See comment in #2 above. Much of the energy of this square probably goes into her acting career and artistic/photographic endeavors, especially since Neptune is the modern ruler of her creative 5th house.

What most incomplete delineators miss are the odd configurations in charts. Diane Keaton has a yod to the Sun from Pluto sextile Uranus with Uranus in the 7th house which seeks different types of men. She has a quindecile from Moon to Saturn which causes insecurity resulting in strong emotional control. She has Lilith in the first house in Sagittarius causing strong influence on perfecting self and very open and sometimes wild actions. Other things ignored on the four major asteroids and the placement of Chiron. With these fine tuners it is usually impossible to see where some personality traits come from. Reference The Quindecile by Reeves and Lilith by Delphine Jay. All connections to Neptune enter in to someone who can mimic all personalities in TV drama or movies. The Sun in the second house makes gathering resources an obsession. Success in the entertainment business usually does not come from standard charts. The personal lives are usually very difficult as is this one.

1. Ditzy personna? A Capricorn with Scorpio is not a ditz. But she would know how to market that side of herself with Cap Sun conjunct Venus (vanity, marketing abilities) and Scorpio rising which is self-conscious in its body, very shrewd and reserved. And Leo MC will happily laugh at itself and clown around. And Moon in Aquarius in 2d house in air grand trine with Neptune (spaciness) and Uranus (weirdness) could lend an airy, detached flair to her expression. And Uranus is in her 7th house and the house ruler is Venus, contributing to the fact that her role in her partner's movies pulled out this side of her personality (Venus conjunct Sun). Also, Sun square Neptune can have lapses of knowing one's identity and could show some deep insecurities that her audience can relate to.
2. Unavailable Men? Mars conjunct Saturn in Cancer shows she's interested in work-aholic types, maybe emotionally repressed men. Moon opposite Pluto would show control issues in relationships. Uranus in 7th in Gemini shows unexpected surprises in relationships and detached, unemotional qualities to the partner. Capricorn with Scorpio rising reiterates Moon opposite Pluto showing that intimacy is not easy for her, she would rather be creative herself in her work.
3. Sun conjunct Venus in Capricorn in 2d house squaring Neptune in Libra in 11th house. Energies directed toward resolving challenges in resources of making a living, creating beauty (and fashion and photography and film), appealing to groups and communities. Sun rules 10th house of career, Neptune rules 5th house of show biz, Venus rules 3d house of communication showing also areas that are affected by this square.

Ditzy all right! Did you all notice her ouscur outfit or misfit! I was looking for the signature for that in her chart thinking it must be Venus with Uranus ya Uranus alright but very rightly with her ascendant ruler! She has a gorgeous smile and amusing films to her credit she doesn't need anything else to be noticed.
It is a very critical year for her a Saturn return plus other afflictions. She has brought much laughter through her films thank you.

When I think of all the people I know who could be described as seeming ditzy, and I'd have to include myself, as I have been called that, they all have something going on with Neptune. DK has it squaring her Sun and Venus, which rules her asc. in the sidereal system. I have it cnj. Sun and asc. ruler Mercury. Another acquaintance has it cnj. Moon and asc. ruler Mars. Another has it on the asc. aspecting many of her planets.
Falling for unavailable men? Neptune aspecting Venus again. Venus/Neptune idealizes about love and loved ones but has a hard time dealing with the every day reality of a relationship. Also, Mars, ruler of the 7th, is in it's fall and cnj. PL, indicating the good possibility of never marrying.

Using Jones' planetary patterns for a first look at Diane's chart shows a 'locomotive' type with Uranus probably in the 7th house - powerful drive and need for success, well organized and ambitious. Uranus as the focal planet in the 7th - she's the 'real thing', avant garde, independent, eccentric, a free spirit not to be tied down in conventional relationships. This force of character is also revealed in the Opposition in Cardinal Signs ( sun opposite Pluto )- signature of a 'risk-taker'. Hence, her 'ditzy' is probably a persona she has adopted for her own reasons, it accomplishes what she wants to achieve.
On a side note I find the Moon's (the principle of relatedness ) connections with Neptune, Pluto and Uranus highly suggestive on someone that is 'hot wired' into the 'collective consciouness'. Her nervous system may be like a sensitive antennae picking up all the subtle vibes wafting thru the cosmos. And this pattern may be a large part of her great public appeal. She is tuned into the public.
The Neptune/Venus square is probably best understood when looked at as a counterpoint to the powerful sun Opposition to Mars/Saturn. Sun/Mars/Saturn are our 'masculine' archetypes, and in Diane's chart they are in a bit of a war. This aspect suggests that she often feels vulnerable and insecure, with feelings of inadequacy to met the challenges. The Venus applying in Square to Neptune, is a 'feminine' indicator; may function as a 'safety valve' for her distress enabling her to give creative expression to her fears. Reveal the beauty and softness of life.

Ditzy: Mercury in Sag. people enjoy fun and laughs, great sense of humor; Mercury closely sextiles Jupiter in Libra (ruler of Mercury) in the 12th further emphasizing a Neptunian spacy, zany sense of humor; Uranus is drawn in widely trining Jupiter and widely opposing Mercury emphasizing again a most unusual sense of humor. The staccato, ditzy, making fun at the expense of oneself probably comes from a sense of insecurity of self-worth (Mars, ruler of lst house, personality, conjunct Saturn, once again in the 9th house, Jupiter's domain (let's have fun), and the Sun, Venus in Capricorn (very serious, earthy and perhaps insecure about self worth). Although the chart shows strength and power, there is also a need for lots of laughter and fun. With Pluto there on the midheaven for everybody to see, perhaps this ditzy persona was developed to ease her way into powerful positions without overtly threatening other people in power.
The chart shows a great need for a lot of freedom and closeness in relationships: Uranus in Gemini in the 7th house of relationships, ruler Mercury in Sag, widely opposing Uranus (The Original free spirit); Mars/Saturn in Cancer, Pluto in Leo, need for close loving relationships. What better way to maintain freedom and still have some closeness than choosing men who are really not available?
Neptune Square Sun-Venus: Occuring in fixed houses, Diane may have a problem with reality issues surrounding relationships, resources, Neptune,Venus, 2nd house, Libra); may be easily deceived in one-on-one love (Sun, Leo) realtionships and since Uranus, 11th house rules humanity, she may receive the nurturance she needs (after being disillusioned on a more personal level)from merging into the adulation she receives from being a successful movie star.
