  • There is nothing spectacular about his 2nd house. Where does his beautiful voice come from?
  • 3. In the opera world he is known for his versatility. Placido Domingo has sung 118 different roles, more than any other tenor in the annals of music. okay, let's try this again....
Here is my commentary on Placido Domingo....
1. 30 June 1991 ... Pluto was in one of those long drawn-out retrograde patterns running over his moon in Scorpio, in his 3rd house, definitely adding power to his already deep emotional expression ... at the same time Uranus and Neptune were both deep in his 5th House (I take the cusp of a house to be that house's power point), approaching a sextile to his Moon and at trine to Uranus's own position in Taurus, which position definitely does not hurt his reputation as an artist and performer ... the ruler of Capricorn, Saturn, was running over his Sun and Mercury in Aquarius, approaching the 6th House ... this was certainly the man to see if you were of high social status and had lots of taste in the fine arts ... the Moon was also moving with Saturn on that day in Aquarius so no doubt he had some kind of surprise in store for either him or his public ... no doubt something creative to enhance his performances ... Sun was in early Cancer in his 11th and sextile to his Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus, opposite his Venus in Capricorn ... this was a good day to be close to family and friends, and to show his heart to his fans ... we also have Mercury at the end of Cancer, in trine to his Moon, which seems to enhance his emotional awareness and voice ... but bad news for the ego ... Jupiter, Venus and Mars are all close together in Leo ... hmmm ... in his 12th House ... hmmm ... and square to his Moon in Scorpio, his Uranus in Taurus ... what could spoil his day for him would be some big time competitive jealousy and the urge to be the absolute best, no matter what ... so it seems that in his mind, he had to be at the top of the game at this time ... Leo has to be king ... since Leo is not occupied in his natal chart, except by Pluto at the very beginning of the sign (which is not touched by the transiting conjunction), he was probably much more in the limelight at that time than he ever was and felt a lot more pressure to be at his best ... he could have been a victim of others trying to discredit him ... also I notice the conjunction was coming out of a trine with his Mars in Sagittarius, fueling his pride and self-confidence, but he might have been a bit overconfident, and perhaps very angry at himself if he had made a mistake...
2. I note that Venus is in Capricorn in the 5th and trine to Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus in the 9th ... the Jupiter and Saturn post seems to indicate he had a strong background in the finer things, and Venus shows fine personal tastes ... one's voice is strongly under the influence of one's ability to hear and detect fine changes in sound quality ... I feel that Venus holds sway over this, too ... Aquarius is a sound-oriented sign, and I see that he has Sun and Mercury there ... also don't forget his 2nd house is in Libra, one's sense of balance and harmony...
3. With Virgo rising and his Sun and Mercury in Aquarius he is likely to lead a life where there is little time to just rest ... my guess is that he sometimes feels very scattered and spread thinly ... his Mars in Sagittarius would not be caught dead sitting on idle ... he can be a very impatient man, with himself and others ... but he does only what he loves to do and this is what keeps him going...
As usual, thank you for this opportunity... Smiley

Placido Domingo is one of the greatest opera stars of our time. I wonder how this can be shown in the natal chart when hundreds of persons born on the same day have essentially the same horoscope. It seems that we'd have to look at micro patterns such as midpoints involving the Ascendant or Midheaven for the answer to this question. India uses micro charts (harmonics) to narrow down the possibilities of a horoscope's expression.
The birth hour given for Domingo is 10:00 p.m. Even birth hours are always suspicious. In order to give a believable navamsa (9th harmonic) chart for a great singer, I had to slightly adjust the birth time to 10:02:20 or later. This gives a sidereal navamsa ascendant of Scorpio (which has the characteristics of tropical Sagittarius) with ruler Mars in the 2nd house of the voice in Sagittarius. Then the lord of the 2nd, Jupiter is in the 10th in the friendly sign of Leo. (The Sun and Jupiter are friends.)
Jupiter is with Saturn, lord of the 3rd. I think operatic singing must come under both the 2nd (mouth and tongue) and 3rd (lungs, arms and hands).
Operatic singers must have powerful lungs to reach and hold high notes, and their arm and hand movements are always very expressive.
The navamsa Jupiter/Saturn conjunction crosses to the natal ascendant sign of Leo. Thus, if you combine these two charts, the lords of the navamsa 2nd and 3rd are highlighted both by being in the navamsa 10th and by the conjunction to the natal ascendant. Jupiter itself gives exposure to the masses.
Venus must also have to do with the art of singing. Venus is in the natal 5th, and the navamsa ascendant lord Mars is in the exact degree of natal Venus with an orb of only a few minutes. Venus from the navamsa chart falls in the natal 2nd of voice.
It's the synchronization of many astrological factors that give the signature to any specific talent or personality trait. We have many years of research ahead of us as we work to discover specific patterns for numerous traits and abilities.

1. He was obviously on the top of his game on June 30, 1991. What was going on in his chart?
The indication that he was at "the top of his game" on this date is of course a reference to the 80 minutes of applause and 101 curtain calls Domingo received after his performance of Othello in Vienna. There are a number of measurements in his chart for this date which seem to signify the nature and significance of this event, such as transiting Pluto trine (to the minute!) the mid-point of Saturn/Neptune. Pluto natally occupies the eleventh house. This house represents that, which is given by others (such as love, applause, appreciation). This reception of powerful (Pluto) appreciation is brought into focus through a creative/artistic expression of thorough perseverance (Saturn rules the fifth house) and the public exposure (Neptune rules the seventh house) of a captivating projection of self (Neptune in the first house). Also on this date the progressed Moon was square (again to the exact minute) the mid-point Jupiter/Pluto. Progressing through the first house the Moon personalizes the powerful (Pluto) reward (Jupiter) of this mid-point synthesis. The Moon also, it will be noted, is the ruler of the eleventh house of love received so that the love and appreciation given to Domingo by others come into play in this progressed Moon configuration. To mention one other aspect on this date, consider progressed Mars sextile (to one minute) the mid-point of Venus/Uranus. Domingo's unique (Uranus) talent (Venus) and sense of self-worth (Venus rules the second house) which are keyed into his work (Uranus rules the sixth house) are focused on a stirring (Mars) of shared emotional experience (Mars rules the eight house). Through the Venus ruler ship of the ninth house the foreign location of the outstanding ovation is suggested.  2. There is nothing spectacular about his second house. Where does his beautiful voice come from?
In a chart the Moon is the body of greatest importance (after the Sun) because it is where we see the best expression of the light of the Sun (the power house of the zodiac). The location of Domingo's Moon therefore suggests that a primary focus of his chart is communication (Moon in third house) having emotional depth (Moon in Scorpio); hence the opera singing. (And hence of course according to this organization of Sun and Moon the humanitarianism (Sun in Aquarius) which the success of his musical communication facilitates expression). The Moon/Uranus opposition no doubt accounts for the distinctive, fresh and exciting form of this communication as well. Consider also the stellium in Taurus which, being the sign governing the throat, emphasizes this Taurean characteristic and more importantly the idea of the "beautiful" voice (Venus rules Taurus) associated with Domingo. This emphasis is further underlined through rulership. Because Venus rules the natal second house, the house it also rules naturally, the Venusians co-incidence not only emphasizes the idea of the beautiful but also affords the Taurean element a channel of operation. Also note Venus trines two of the planets in Taurus, again emphasizing the Taurean focus. Indeed Venus is in Mutual Reception with one of these planets, Saturn, the planet it more closely trines so that each colours the other's operation thereby adding to the significance of each. Capricorn, the sign Venus occupies, is also of course, the sign on the cusp of the fifth house (artistic expression). A number of mid-point aspects also repeat this Venusian/Taurean emphasis. Moon sextiles Sun/Venus mid-point; Moon conjuncts Venus/Neptune; Venus conjuncts Mercury/Mars; Jupiter in Taurus conjuncts the Taurean mid-point of Mercury/Pluto; Uranus trines Sun/Venus; Saturn sextiles Venus/Jupiter. Also note there is repetitive emphasis on Venus through disposition by rulership. And as well as Venus having increased significance by being the oriental planet it also has added importance by being in a position of perfect hayz.
3. Where does the guy get all his energy?
Virgo rising gives him great capability for hard work and especially with Mercury, ruler of Virgo conjunct the Sun, opposed powerful Pluto and sextile angular Mars in energetic Sagittarius there is definite access to energy for this application. With versatile Mercury also ruling his MC, Domingo's diverse and well-fueled energy drive will have multiple application in his career focus (the duality of the Gemini MC already suggest two or more careers). But consider also the possibility of what an Earth Grand Trine (Saturn/Venus/ASC) or indeed and out-of-aspect Earth Grand Trine (Sun/Uranus/Neptune) might play in this energy organization.

[continued from posting above:] by Donal Holland
The Grand Trine itself describes a potential defense structure because by affording a ready isolated circuit of energy flow it quickly dominates, inhibiting or at least curtailing other developments. It takes over, in other words. Thus because the Earth element is all about sensual gratification, Domingo's music, wine and food focus might be seen in terms of over-compensation for those developments its dominance curtails. Moreover, being an operation in isolation the Grand Trine can become an expression of self-sufficiency. The Moon (the importance of which in a chart has already been mentioned above) being in Scorpio is of course very much a need for self-sufficiency (consider Pluto - recycling). Could there be an explication then for "all his energy" by way of not just its significant presence anyway (e. g. angular Mars) but also its efficient (Virgo ASC) use in focused and possibly over the top (Grand Trine), but none the less versatile (Mercury) application? Note also that Uranus (intensity) rules the sixth house (work) and that the ruler of the Ascendant decan is Saturn, emphasizing hard work and ambition. Three planets in Taurus give great staying power, of course, enabling him to fulfill his ambitions. With the previous mentioned emphasis on Venus it should be observed that Venus is in Capricorn the sign of ambition and hard work.

Answering the questions in reverse order, Placido Domingo's high energy level comes from angular Sag. Mars, and the Sun (Mercury)-Jupiter (Saturn)-(Chiron) Pluto T-square. Jupiter-Pluto aspects denote high rollers, and Saturn-Venus trine in mutual reception made these calculated risks pay off. The Gemini MC ruler in fifth explains his many varied enterprises.
Placido has talented Uranus and powerful Jupiter-Saturn all in Taurus. Ruling the fourth, Jupiter bestowed the good fortune of a musical family background, and fifth-house ruler Saturn (in Great Trine with Ascendant/Venus) brought recognition for his initiatives. Cap. Venus shows deep and long-lasting musical ability, as well his love of traditional zarzuela and classical opera. While many singers have favorable Venus/Taurus (throat) placements, Placido has more going for him. His Venus is also the Mars-Mercury midpoint, and forms semi-sextiles with both. Semi-sextiles are like small conjunctions, inherently neither "benefic" or "malefic". Their 30° Taurus-nature simply puts things into effect. Placido's career (MC in Gemini) took off for good after he developed a flexible diaphragm (Mercury/Gemini) technique which saves wear and tear on the throat, and allows him to sustain voice projection even in opera's toughest roles(Saturn square Mercury).
On June 30, 1991, Placido received Guinness world-record applause. On his chart, TrJupiter in Leo (showy success) semi-sextiled the Ascendant, and TrUranus in Cap. (historic talent) conjunct natal Venus was activating the "filled sextile" described above. His converse Ascendant opposed natal Venus and his progressed MC conjoined natal Chiron, at the same time he was undergoing a Chiron return. The Vienna Opera House ovation was eighty minutes of sustained hand clapping. Most now accept that Neptune (Pisces) rules the feet, and we see here another small non-etymological indication that Chiron (Virgo) rules the hands.

I looked through primary textbooks by March & McEvers and Hand and could find no reference for the house of the voice. I spoke of the second house because Taurus rules the throat. Do you have a definitive reference for Voice = 3rd house?

Rex Bill's Rulership Book, p. 154 lists voice and vocal organs as Mercury and 3rd house first and 2nd house and Taurus second. I assumed voice was 3rd house and the organs were 2nd house. Voice has to do with communication, and what kind of a voice (pleasant voice, a soft voice, etc.) seems to be a 3rd house matter. At least it works in the charts of my father, who had a soft voice and Eleanor Roosevelt, who had a very irritating voice, for which she had to take voice lessons, etc.
With the new date for Placido, he has Moon at 20 SC, Part of Fortune at 26 SC and Mars at 11 Sag in the 3rd. Scorpio showing a powerful voice, the Part of Fortune showing his place in the world is through his voice and the fact that he can make money with his voice. Mars in Sag shows that it takes him all over the world, and he sings in many languages. Moon and Part of Fortune ruled by Pluto in Leo in the 11th, the general public, opp. his Sun in the 5th, big time world stage there, and the Sag is ruled by Jupiter in Taurus in the 8th. I think that does it. Whereas if you look at the 2nd, you just have Libra on the cusp ruled by Venus in Cap in the 4th and that doesn't explain anything, except maybe he likes nice things and security and will work to get them.

Just some icing on the multi-layered interpretive cake that you have all created:
Venus is at the exact - to the minute! - mid-point of Mercury and Mars; the Mercury-Mars mid-point brings together the motive power (Mars) of vocalization (Mercury) and here unites it with the beauty of Venus. Venus' strength is enhanced exponentially not only by its mutual reception and close trine with Saturn, but also by the fact that these two are the final despositors for all other chart factors.
Using traditional rulerships (Saturn as ruler of Aquarius) and Whole Sign houses, Saturn rules both the creative 5th and the work/health 6th, the houses of Venus & Mercury; and Venus rules the money 2nd as well as the fortunate, international 9th. FWIW, Venus, Mercury and Saturn are "friends" in Jyotish (mixing up systems -- sorry, it's the Pisces in me!) and thus all support each other's agendas.
As strong as Venus & Saturn are in his chart, Mercury is stronger. Venus and Saturn are both in the bounds, or terms, of Mercury -- as is Mercury itself. Furthermore, Mercury is not only the ruler of the Ascendant and Mid-heaven, but, since it is the triplicity ruler for air signs for night-time births, it is also the ruler, by triplicity, of his Sun and his MC (as well as his 2nd house).
As for charisma -- Mars & Neptune are both strong by being angular; and, they are in parans (Neptune culminated as Mars rose the morning of his birth).
On June 30, 1991, progressed Mercury at 29+ Aquarius was trine progressed ASC at 29+ Libra, allowing the full power of his Mercury to flow forth.

The problem with these comments is that we all know whose chart it is and that, in this case, it is a famous opera singer - so, everybody's goal is to justify the fact, with whatever astrological arguments they can think of. I think it would be more beneficial for our research to just get a chart, say it belongs to a celebrity, and ask what talent has made the person famous, and possibly some other questions, to which answers are known and can be proved. Then let us see how many comments in this case would say the chart belongs to a famous opera singer, or immediately see in the chart a very beautiful voice. Even if the person has other great talents, if he became a famous opera singer, the great voice should be easily visible and frequently mentioned. Then we should be able to learn from the most accurate comments.

First of all, Domingo has the ruler of his 10th house in his 5th house, so its not surprising that he choose the entertainment field. That sun and mercury in the 5th house are opposed by pluto and chiron, so he did obtain the extreme of fame. the plants in his 5th house are also square saturn, so he really is ambitious. The voice probably comes from venus in capricorn trine taurus plants and venus rules 2nd house. The energy comes from mars closely oppose MC and square the ascendant. People with an angular mars do have lots of energy and drive. On june30, 1991, pluto was conjunct his moon and the moon rules the public so its no wonder he gave such a great well received performance. Saturn was also conjunct his aquarius plants in his 5th house and saturn gives you a reward that you have worked for.

1. He was obviously on the top of his game on June 30, 1991. What was going on in his chart?
I'm not sure what event(s) you are referring to in 1991. His Solar Return for 1991, set for Mexico City, has return Jupiter rising in the angular first house and the return Sun closely conjunct his Descendant. A prominent Jupiter in a return chart indicates a fortunate year, and the return Sun conjunct an angle always portends an especially significant year with the likelihood of public recognition.
2. There is nothing spectacular about his 2nd house. Where does his beautiful voice come from?
The 2nd house has Venus-ruled Libra on its cusp. Venus and Neptune, the planets most closely associated with musical talent, both occupy angular houses and form important aspect patterns. Neptune rises in the 1st house, conjoins his Lunar North Node, and forms a grand trine with his Sun in the 5th house of creative expression and his Uranus in Taurus (the sign of the voice) in the international 9th house. Venus in disciplined Capricorn occupies the 4th house and forms a grand trine with his Virgo Ascendant and with the close Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in Taurus, which governs the voice. Both grand trines involve planets in Taurus and suggest vocal musical talent. Finally, his Ascendant at 15 degrees Virgo lies in the Chaldean decanate of Virgo that is ruled by Venus, and his Sun lies in the first decan of Aquarius, whose Chaldean ruler is also musical Venus.
3. In the opera world he is known for his versatility. Placido Domingo has sung 118 different roles, more than any other tenor in the annals of music. He also conducts, is the artistic director of the Washington Opera, and runs a restaurant in New York? He is in perpetual good heath and does not seem to tire from his hectic schedule. Where do the guy get all his energy?
His versatility is probably indicated by the fact that versatile Mercury rules both his Virgo Ascendant and his Gemini Midheaven. Versatile Mercury being conjunct his Sun and sextile his Mars, both fiery "planets", adds to his energy and enthusiasm. The Sun/Mercury conjunction occurs in his 5th house of performance and creative self-expression. Aquarius rules his 6th house of health concerns. The rulers of Aquarius, Saturn and Uranus, both favorably trine his Virgo Ascendant, which represents his body, thus conferring good health.

Big time Capricorn pushing Venus which rules the 2nd house. There is beaucoup Taurus in the eighth and ninth house. There was enough power in Taurus to start world war two Neptune in Virgo in the first is precision in music. I have a tin ear and Venus in Taurus and Mars in Gemini. I sound like a yowling cat so we are born to be what we are. This is a man gifted by the universe. Thank Goodness.

Placido Domingo -- the three questions:
1. On June 30, 1991 transiting Sun was conjunct the part of fortune in Domingo's natal 10th house. That correlates to high honors. Transiting Saturn Retrograde was going back over his natal Sun, ruler of the 12th house (divinely inspired expression). Saturn rules the 5th of creativity and entertainment. His expression was clear and touched the highest and deepest levels of being. Transiting Uranus had made a conjunction to natal Venus, ruler of the 2nd house of money and voice. The perfect voice was in extraordinary form! And transiting Pluto was going over natal Moon giving power to the ability to communicate deep emotional expression.
2. The voice comes from Venus in Capricorn in the 4th (depth of the soul), ruler of he 2nd of voice and finances in mutual reception with Saturn in Taurus in the 8th (shared and cathartic emotional experience, i.e.opera). Saturn is conjunct Jupiter. Venus trine a Jupiter-Saturn would give a perfectly (Saturn) beautiful (Venus) voice, especially for operatic (Jupiter) expression.
3. Concerning where the energy and versatility come from: Sun is opposite Pluto, actually Pluto in Leo is opposite the Sun-Mercury mid-point. Sun/Pluto is an indication of formidable and inexhaustible energy. The natal T-cross in fixed signs would tend to give a lot of stamina (Sun-Mercury Aquarius opposed Pluto Leo and square Jupiter-Saturn Taurus). Neptune rising in Virgo and Mars in Sagittarius near the 4th house cusp gives great versatility (chart recast in Koch house system).

Looking at the more recently discovered bodies, a couple of interesting conjunctions show up.
Just as in Sharon's case, there is a conjunction with 1996 TL66. Instead of Mars, however, here it is where one might expect it, conjunct to Mercury.
Mercury   8:25 Aquarius  1996 TL66 9:40 Aquarius
Also, Chariklo (literally "known for her grace", the mythic spouse of Chiron) which orbits between Saturn and Uranus, is close to Neptune - perhaps conferring strong charisma and an aura of perfection.
Neptune  27:33 Virgo  Chariklo 29:53 Virgo

The Voice came from the Venus ruled second house in Capricorn which is in mutual reception to Saturn in Taurus: beauty, strength and stability.
Venus has beautiful aspects: parallel to Mars and Part of Fortune, C// to Midheaven and Vulcanus, the powerful T-Nep hypothetical. Venus is S3 to both Neptune and the Midheaven, what more could you want.

I think Domingo's talent for opera came from jupiter conjunct saturn (8th house) trine venus in capricorn (5th house). Jupiter ruling the 4th signifies a natural inborn talent. Other people benefit from this extraordinary talent (8th house) following years of discipline (saturn) which would afford travel, fame, and fortune (uranus in 9th). Mercury in aquarius trine midheaven shows the worldwide news of his talent. Virgo rising shows his perfectionism and attention to detail.
His energy may come from Mars in Sagittarius in the 3rd house (in other words his upbeat and positive attitude gave his body the inspiration it needed to keep going). After all, the mind is everything. He has great powers of regeneration since Mars rules his 8th house. The inconjunct to jupiter and saturn in the 8th allows him to change his perception and values in order to journey onward.

Question # 2. I would say that his beautiful voice comes from the only major aspect involving Venus. Venus not only rules his 2nd house of finances but also rules singing/voice in general. Domingo's Venus is in conjunction to its dispositor, Saturn (bringing durability & strength to his voice) and Jupiter (adding largeness & expansion as well). Both Jupiter and Saturn are found in his 8th house of money while favourably aspected by Venus.

Wow, he has 3 planets in Taurus, the throat/sound center. Anyone with Moon, Sun or several planets in Taurus are born with lovely voices, singing or speaking. And one is Jupiter!!!. This means a very powerful voice. Jupiter is trine to Venus, adding greater ability to express beautiful voice and sound with many benefits as a performer being bestowed. Wherever Jupiter is, is where our benefits come for that life time. However, he is a realist, but is also spiritually directed with Mars in Sag. He has a goal to succeed. He is a perfectionist (Virgo Rising) to use his voice in the best perfected way. He is quite magnetic with 7 planets in Fixed Signs, plus Moon in Scorpio, a very intense sign. Mercury ruling both Ascendant and MC - he is very intelligent and critical of his work.
He is a mixture of versatility, magnetism, and persistence. He is transferring his Moon in Scorpio energies (sexual center) into his throat center of voice and Sound. Giving out great joy and happiness to others. The Fixed signs are excellent at keeping on a goal. Sun and Mercury in House of Leo, of creativity and performing. He loves to perform. He loves the stage, not to mention Neptune (music) in First House. Venus in Capricorn gives him a serious side in love. This planet is in an out-of-orbed, Grand Trine in Earth signs and one arm is Neptune in 1st house, lending a lot of promise and support for success in his life. Earth signs in trine usually promise some measure of success or accomplishment in life and material substance. With his Grand Trine - he was promised the success, but he also has had to work for it. Gemini MC - versatility in his career. Mercury ruling his (MC)10th of career, found in 5th house of Leo, again, creative, great stage presence. Pluto and Chiron conjunct shows a very special destiny. Beautiful man in soul and spirit.
One more comment: The Webmaster asked about Placido's 2nd house. (Firstly, Taurus is the Natural 2nd house sign, from the Natural Zodiac.) Libra is on Natal 2nd house cusp with Venus ruling. Venus rules Natural 2nd house of Taurus. We look to where Venus is, in Capricorn (ambition to 'express' and sing). And Venus is trine to Jupiter - the two Great Benefics of our Heavens in trine!!! in this chart. Jupiter being the Greater Benefic, Venus the Lesser Benefic. The trine is creative, and harmoniously expressive. Not to mention his Grand Trine in earth signs. Also Uranus in Taurus (unusual and unique voice) is trine to Neptune (music) in 1st house in Virgo. The whole chart shouts of a glorious voice used to create in sound the deepest emotions possible of expression.
P.S. Thank you so much for this chart. I love this man, his voice is superlative, and dynamic - Jupiter in Taurus - I am so glad I am on your list and thank you for a wonderful, wonderful site. Beautiful wheels too. Blessings, Viv
