Discussion about
Bill Moyers, born 5 June 1934 at 11:15 PM in Hugo OK

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Bill Moyers likens his vocation to that of a "beachcomber on the shores of other people's wisdom." He famous for is soft spoken investigative documentaries and long-form conversations with some of the world's leading thinkers. His six hour conversation with Joseph Campbell is probably that most well known. His shows are never partisan or strident, though they evince a clear leaning towards a progressive political philosophy. He sides with the people against the impersonal forces of big government and big business. In this era of media consolidation, his broadcasts are one of the few places where alternative points of view can be heard. Even FCC chairman, Michael Powell acknowledged that if it hadn't been for PBS, there wouldn't have been any media coverage of the lobbying for more corporate concentration of the media. In this era where the right wing media machine adroitly produces a simulacrum of consensus by ricocheting their opinions through the media, it is comforting to know there is a Bill Moyers in broadcast journalism.
Bill Moyers has collected quite a bit of wisdom in his 70 years growing up in East Texas, serving in the LBJ White House, and interviewing many of the greatest minds of our day. I urge you to read his reflections on the current political landscape as it relates to the broad sweep of American Progressive politics. It contains an abundance of the intellectual insight and heartfelt moral passion that make him such a shining star and beacon for truth.
  • What brings this man to the top of the journalism profession?
  • Where his passion for justice and the little guy in his chart?
  • Why did he choose conversation as his core journalistic approach?

Mr. Moyers has a fascinating chart for Medieval delineation, and I thank you for the thorough bio. There is definite action toward intellectual expression and initiation with a predominance of Air in the chart. The ruler of the first is contained within (ancient rulership) indicating a man who is self-reliant, depending on his own resources to realize his goals. This would include being reserved, studious, employing traditional spiritual values and humanistic ideology (Jupiter in Libra trine Asc./Saturn ruler of ninth by exaltation). Bringing Brilliant communication to the home (Sun in Gemini/4th trine Asc.)

Ralph Nader also has Saturn in Aquarius in the first, both men are seen as social zealots who maintain composure in the face of detraction. They are seen as knowledgeable and detatched from ego. Though Ralph has Venus rising, creating a greater lust to initiate social reform through action.

His Grand Air Trine gives the ablility for superb intellectual flow, Jupiter gives opportunity to create substantial revenue from partnerships (8th), connected to the Sun in the fourth (with the ruler of the MC there) these opportunities will be met with family (4th) and center around learning (gemini). It seems he turned a natural motivation (Asc.) for him into a production company with his wife (8th/4th) for learning and ego-less information sharing (Air).

The reactive quality of the signs on the cusps of his work houses (Scorpio and Cancer) indicates a professional life that does not seek the center of attention (though Scorpio creates control), but rather supports the intellectual initiation and communication of others and reacts (Mars, ruler of the MC, is in Gemini). His Primary Motivation, to aquire information (Aquarius) resonates into his career as well, while being played out in these watery, feminine natures. So instead of being an opinion writer or a face-front news anchor, Mr. Moyers chose to support the zealous communication (Mars in Gemini) and emotional displays (Moon in Aries) of others in his journalistic endeavors.

Mr.Moyers has a ninth house ruled by Libra indicating a spiritual world filled with a humanistic love of balance and justice learned perhaps from the family and neighborhood (Venus in third house, ruler of fourth).

With Mr. Moyers I see a passionate drive to succeed (Scorpio Mc) in mastering the ability to communicate his thoughts and ideas which stem from his early upbringing, and was focused on intellectual development (ruler Mars Gemini 4th). He had an inner conflict with his idea of home and family that he needed to resolve (Mars conjunct Chiron). He needed to know the meaning of home and family from a more spiritual or universal perspective. Pluto the other ruler of his Mc is in Cancer in the 6th and gives a strong incentive to help others and to find stabililty and security by becoming self reliant (ruler Aries 2nd house). His Ascendant Aquarius reveals an individualistic humanitarian of a serious nature (Saturn 1st) with original ideas and an exceptional mind and ability and love to communicate with people from all walks of life (ruler Aquarius conjunct Venus 3rd). His ability to gain balance and understnding of his own emotional nature (Jupiter Libra 8th) helps him to gain empathy for the less fortunate (trine to N. Node/Ascendant) and to become a spokesperson for this cause (Sun Gemini 4th) an to bring it to the home. This can be done through the media of T.V. or entertainment (ruler Mercury 5th). Jupiter's ruler is Venus in Taurs 3rd which ties his success to the media of communication.

#1 -Probably Jupiter in 9th house in Libra, after he got over the square to Saturn in his first and the opposition to his moon- which maybe helped fire him up a little, fight for it. #2 - Um, would that be Jupiter in Libra in the 9th also or Uranus in the 3rd conjunct venus (love of revolutionary ideas).
#3- Sun in Gemini in 5th house and mercury in 5th would make communication his creative outlet and what initially feeds the ego (ego identification and gratification) 3rd house venus trine Neptune in 7th= definately a desire and love of communication about mystery and depth with others.
THanks. Loved your article. Love Moyers.

The journalistic house in the chart in my experience is the third. Most practitioners of the art of small communication whose talent is for producing short pieces over a wide range of subjects have multiple planets here. [Big writing as in novels and books points more to the 9th.] Bill Moyers has Uranus and Venus here, so hes quirky, innovative, courageous and utterly charming in his approach. Saturn in Aquarius in the 1st gives him an objective approach, a strong sense of justice and an obligation to right social wrongs. Neptune trines Venus and squares the Sun indicating deep compassion. Perhaps he chose conversation as his way because of an entertaining 5th house Mercury ( and in equal house a fifth house Sun.) He likes to be part of the action, to collect the applause, as opposed to print journalists, who tend to be hidden behind their columns and bylines. He has a personality that likes to be seen. The Mars Neptune square also emphasises his attraction for a showbiz career rather than a straight journalistic one. www.astroinform.com

I think that Mr. Moyer's Grand-Trine stands out in his chart. First he has his sun in Gemini in the 5th, which shows that his nature (sun) is to be a communicator(Gem) by expressing himself (5th). This is trine his Ascendant/N.Node conjunction. Here he finds his purpose(N.Node) fits well with his personality (asc.), which is individualistic and people oriented (Aqu) because of his career as an interviewer and editorialist. This trines Jupiter in Libra, generous in his relationships, in this case professional relationships (I don't know of the personal ones). His career is all about relationships and his interactions with others, which is emphasized by Jupiter being in its own house. This then trines back to his sun. This all works well by itself but is "kited" by his Moon in Aries and this takes the spin out of the G.-Trine by putting a hasty, maybe quick to judgement (Aries) emotionality (Moon) into his work. This can be seen from his being very into social issues (Asc.in Aqu) but this hasty emotionalism makes him biased in his views to the point of not being fair and balanced to differing views.

As a critical student of astrology and knowing Bill Moyers from his intervieuws with Jo Campbell I am astonished to see his chart. It really speeks for itself. My comments can be short. He is the puer eaternus, a typical Gemini, looks younger and charming, an artist with words, an interest for 1000 different things, a typical researcher and innovator and certainly for the hidden secrets of life ( Jupiter in Libra 8th house ), with Aquarius on the ascendant he reflects all characteristics of this sign : social, humanitairian, likes people, etc. Here together with Venus in the 3th he likes the little men "Liberti, egaliti et fraterniti), he also is a feeling thinker (Mercury in Cancer) He has an open mind with Mercury sextile Venus and with Mars in Gemini he has an never resting mind, a penetrating (Scorpio) mind. With his Sun trine Jupiter and Mercury in the 5th house he has to reach the top in his communicationcareer. Moreover His predisposition as a conversational journalist is reflected a.o. having the moon square mercury which explains also his interest for past cultures and the history in general. He always sees the best in people being an idealist (Neptune 7 house) and a romantic. His signature is Libra and with Jupiter in Libra : he likes to be the balance by showing a strong sense of fairness, being moderate, charming and impartial. He is a charming, young looking, penetrating, good listening person, with a high interest in the past and in changing his environment. Assertive but seldom never agressive or offensive in public, good verbal skills and a very curious and creative (Mercurius in the 5 th house)mind. Most probably he is one of the persons who is saying "I never did something special to attain a great reputation (no planets in the 10th, although the powerfull Pluto is at work in the 6th house (high interest in his work and clothes, good food, most probably also a epicurist: loves the good things in life). Much is given to him, he followed his bliss! (J.Campbell). So many more things can be said about Bill, but I promished to make it short. May God bless Bill Moyers. Jo

One important fact missing from this bio is that in July 2002 Moyers was charged with drunk driving in Vermont. A roadside breath test (not admissible in court) showed Moyers' blood-alcohol content to be 0.10 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08, according to authorities.
Moyers originally denied the charges and claimed he was in full control of his faculties. But on 8/12/2002 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Moyers had pled guilty and paid a $750 fine.
He was also ordered to take a drunken driving course, and given a choice of paying $1,000 to an anti-drunk-driving group, or doing 200 hours of community service.

I have followed this man for years. Now with Neptune on the asc, Pluto quincunc Pluto and Uranus sextile venus it is time for him to slow down and write with his wonderful command of the language. I have heard him recently speak on curren affairs on the planet and it brings things to a reality that concerns me. Gemini is often derided for its scatteredness but this man has made communications an art. Too bad that the new press conglomerants ignore him. I only hope that, like STuds Turkel, he keeps up the good fight.

A long time admirer of Bill Moyers and this being my first glimpse at his chart I couldn't but notice the series of sextile aspects which I've found impart an high degree of perception and often intelligence. I've read in cook-book type astrology books that Moon sqr Merc is symbolic of one who doesn't prepare for career very well. It can impart a personality shaped by conflicts between one's feeling side and one's thinking self. Another result could simply be a very active, curious mind with an inherent need to push, probe, learn, and express. It is through dialogue that his Moon's needs are met.
Journalism traditionally corresponds to 9th house affairs. Hence we find, Jupiter, the natural ruler of 9th in the 9th and in creative aspect to his Sun,No Node Moon, and ascendant, completing a grand Air trine.
His focus upon "the commonwealth" and passion for justice I find stems from his strong Aquarian placements. One might call him a reformer or a 'well-behaved rebel'. This is emphasized by Uranus sqr Pluto. However, Moyers' Uranus is tempered with a sextile to Saturn, imparting a seriousness to his life, instilling in him a strong sense of mission or purpose (here it's of interest to note Ralph Nader has Saturn in Aquarius on his Asc).
You ask why he chose conversation as his journalistic approach. Perhaps, considering the strength of his Moon sqr Merc, conversation CHOSE him. Also given the So Node in Leo and a strong 5th house, he obviously enjoys people, especially one-on-one type of encounters as a node in 1st and 7th houses would find fullfilment therein. The spontanaiety found in dialogue opens vistas into Mr Moyers psyche and into his subjects as well.
