Discussion about
Barbara Walters, born 25 September 1929 at 06:50 AM in Boston MA

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Barbara Walters recently celebrated her 75th birthday and, after 740 interviews, she co-hosted her last "20/20" show. Before saying good-bye to her devoted audience, she hosted a two-hour retrospective of her most popular interviews. In her career with the program, Walters has interviewed heads of state, every President and First Lady since Richard Nixon, celebrities and newsmakers. In 1977 she arranged the first joint interview with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Israel's Prime Minister Menachem Begin at a time when the relationship between their two nations was fragile. She scooped the interview with Monica Lewinsky after the Bill Clinton affair became known. One of the busiest news personalities on TV, she seems to be equally comfortable with asking banal questions and serious ones and doesn't hesitate to scold her interviewees like a mother hen.
  • Where in the chart do we see the ambitious person who established a number of career "firsts": first woman to co-anchor network news, first woman to earn so much money for the job, first to land exclusive interviews with busy politicians and aggressive heads of state?
  • Her life hasn't been all rosy. Consider her father's bankruptcy, her brother's death and sister's mental illness. Where in the chart would you see these early hardships and financial success?
  • She has a self-deprecating sense of humor, even making fun of the "Barbara Wa-Wa" parody of the way she talks. What keeps her humble despite the power she wields and the influential role she plays in the broadcasting world?

1. Where in the chart do we see the ambitious person who established a number of career "firsts": first woman to co-anchor network news, first woman to earn so much money for the job, first to land exclusive interviews with busy politicians and aggressive heads of state? I'm thinking that Saturn in Sag in the 3rd house sextile Mars and Mercury in the 1st house as well as Pluto in the 10th and ruler of the 10th (Moon) is in Gemini trining Mercury and Mars in Libra in the 1st.
 2. Her life hasn't been all rosy. Consider her father's bankruptcy, her brother's death and sister's mental illness. Where in the chart would you see these early hardships and financial success? Again Pluto (Cancer) in the 10th square Mars and Mercury in (Libra) the 1st. Uranus square the MC, Chiron and North Node in the 8th, Jupiter crossed the MC when still very young and then crossed over Pluto in the 10th. Saturn in the 4th opposing Pluto in the 10th. I would guess that her brother died around 4:35AM on 26th of May in 1931. Just a guess..
 3. She has a self-deprecating sense of humor, even making fun of the "Barbara Wa-Wa" parody of the way she talks. What keeps her humble despite the power she wields and the influential role she plays in the broadcasting world? The Midheaven is in Cancer and Sun in the 12th.

What a cool Libra!
1.) Firsts: Represented by Rising Sun and 1st house Mars. Sun conjunct Ascendant energized by opposition from Uranus. Mars in first house energized by Pluto in 10th house of career.
2.) Not a rosy life: 12th house Sun; Sibling problems represented by Saturn in 3d opposite Moon.
3.) Humility: A double Libra knows how to think about the other guy. Would Chiron conjunct North Node also do this. I've seen humble Pluto in 10th people before, usually they understand crises from watching parents go through something.

Besides holding the answers to the above questions, Barbara's chart also shows why she has always remained a beloved icon in the field of broadcasting, never once touched by the age prejudice like so many others in her field. Her close Venus/Neptune conjunction in the 11th house raises her to goddess-like status, while at the same time her Leo (on the cusp) need for validation and approval is met in spades.

Hello Everyone - Barbara's Career success as a Powerful Women (mother) lies in having Mid-Heaven in Cancer - the Nurturing, Caring Professional. Pluto their, would give some Transformation to her Career as time goes on. Being a Double Libran (Sun and Ascendant), would give her great Diplomacy skills, ideal for Communicating with Politicians, etc. Her Large Communications Skills, lay in having Jupiter in Gemini - Good Fortune (the Benefic) and Teacher and connecitons with Law and Legalities. Her success and drive for Financial Stability and Security lies on North Node in Taurus and a connection with other people's Money etc. Barbara's Jupiter in Gemini would give her Great Whit and sense of Humour (Bob hope was a Gemini) Smiley The South Node, Pluto Trine, could have given this LOSS she incurred in the 2nd House - the huse of Money Aquisition.

I think this birth date is wrong - doesn't up up to a thrice married millionaire with no kids and where is the luck that gave her the breaks?

Hi Deanna, You've got a point. I checked to see where Barbara's Part of Fortune is: conjunct her Moon (public) and Jupiter (Luck) in the 9th house (publishing, travel). It's trining the Mercury/Mars conjunction in the 1st house. This, along with Sun conjunct Ascendant gives some luck.
The money stuff. Her Scorpio rules her 2d house. Scorpio's ruler is Pluto (fame) and is in the 10th house of career. The Moon's nodes cross the 2d & 8th houses with Chiron conjunct North Node in 8th.
Doesn't she have an adopted daughter? I think I saw her in an interview. Their relationship has had some tough times because of Barbara's career but the daughter's really cool, works with kids who have problems, or something. (Aquarius on 5th house cusp).

Barbara Walters'(Sun in Libra, Libra rising) decision to retire, last year, allowed her to join a washed up cast of television anchors who also faded into the sunset, such as Tom Brokaw and the soon to be retired, Dan Rather.
Walters and Brokaw will have a pleasant retirement of naval gazing and comfort, while Rather may be licking his wounds(albeit in comfort) after the Sept.,2004, story about President Bush and his military record.
The personal appeal of these news celebrities, who reach millions of households, is enormous. For Walters, whose busy and well-aspected natal Pluto is in the 10th house of career and social standing, the aspect is corroborative and explains how fortunate and lucky she was.
Clearly, it is a new ball game for t.v. journalists, though,as the field of journalism struggles to find a new identity, in light of the recent firings at C.B.S.News over the Bush story and the Jayson Blair plagarism scandal at the New York Times, last year.
Since the "big three" tv networks have had shinking advertising revenues for years, the departure of people like Walters and Brokaw, who reportedly received a huge annual wage, seems like a downsizing of the ABC and NBC news departments, as well as fiscally expedient for company bigwigs.
Could Larry King and Ted Koppel be next ?
That said, I think people were becoming frankly bored of Walter's phoney (creampuff?) interviews, her love of money and celebrity status that seemed to interest her more than her dayjob. This love of comfort and celebrated status is denoted by her natal conjunction of Moon conjunct Jupiter in the 9th house, trining Mercury conjunct Mars.
Walters also had an instinctual capacity for self-promotion and the marketing of Barbara Walters. Television interviewing is not really about being erudite or expert in your field, but mostly about asking the right questions, flattering your guests and making them feel good, while not offending advertisers, management and viewers.
As a "double Libra," Walters was an extremely charming and popular woman and still is. Most of Walters' decent work as an interviewer occured back in the 1980's, but the ones in her later years seemed too soft and mushy for my liking.
Her longevity and staying power in the news business came from natal Venus in the 11th house, trine Saturn in the 3rd house. This shows the meeting of friends and powerful contacts for career and personal gain.

I think the death of her brother and the handicapped sister is expressed with Jupiter and Moon(female) in Gemini, opposed by Saturn in sag. disposed by Mercury in Libra , disposed by her ruling planet Venus between Libra and Virgo conj Neptune ruler of 12 house of long term chronicillness. also Jup. moon and Saturn talk about travel and communication.Uranus in aries opposing Sun in Libra suggested a sudden unique marriage,I guess her husband is chronically ill. .Another with Jup and moon is Jhonny Carson so, she will never get tired of talking and interview people.barbara likes to talk,to travel, to communicate, characteristic to work on radio and t.v.so, barbara was able to develop her potentials when radio and T.v were emerging in the world otherwise, in other epoch remained as potentials without proper expression.

How can you possibly include "Hanoi Jane" in honor of your "100 Women of the Century" unless you intend to include her as number one on your WORST WOMAN list. Not an American, but an American TRAITOR. She will be written in history as a traitor with American blood on her hands. Every U S veteran will view Barbara Walters in a different light if in fact this terrible person is honored as a person better than what she really is.
Tokyo Rose was not a traitor. Signed, a US Navy Veteran
