Discussion about
Richard Widmark, born 26 December 1914 at 12:45 PM in Sunrise MN

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Richard Widmark was a fabulous actor..able to play a variety of roles quite believably, with characterizations foreign to his own personality. A quiet man, he tapped his depths to play a sadistic killer for his breakthrough role in "Kiss of Death," an American prosecuting attorney in "Judgment at Nuremburg," an army captain who helps Native Americans in "Cheyenne Autumn," a bigot in "No Way Out" and a tough, rule-bending police detective in "Madigan." In his long life, he made over 70 films and numerous TV shows, all the while guarding his privacy and refusing to succumb to the glamour of Hollywood. Let's look at this working actor's chart this week.
  • Widmark's moon in Taurus is in his first house but in the second sign from the Ascendant. What did this moon placement lend to his personality, his talents, and his career choice?
  • We often say that an actor's roles can be found in his chart. By all accounts, Widmark's personality was quite different from most of the roles he played so brilliantly. Where in the chart do you see the gritty cop, the justice-seeker, the rebel, and the psychotic killer who gleefully (and chillingly) pushes a wheelchair-bound old woman down the stairs to her death ("Kiss of Death")?
  • Where in the chart do you see the quiet man who wanted to live a "normal" life, far removed from stardom and Hollywood glitz?
  • For someone born in 1914, Widmark led a remarkably long life. Do our charts indicate length of life and if so, where might we see his longevity in Widmark's chart?

Widmark lived a long and relatively happy life..there are lot of indications for this in chart, which is for the most part remarkably positive...
First is the Sun and Moon are in trine and at the angles, both good points, a sun trine moon shows inward harmony, his parents at least at conception were happy and united and the result was someone who was inwardly happy which resulted in a long happy marriage until she died and his impression of marriage was positive so even in old age, he remarried...both lights are strong with the moon in exalt showing strong energy which carried him into old age...in addition the sun is conjunct mars in its exalt and as the chart ruler in Capricorn's domain...strong, steady and earthy energy with that moon in Taurus thrown in for good measure...Always best to have 1st house ruler stronger than the 6th house ruler for health and here we see the 6th house in detriment and 1st in exalt...so his body was much more vital than any ailment he had...
The 10th house has to do with how the world sees you...gritty and villainous as well as rebellious has to do with Capricorn on the midheaven with the sun-mars right there..real, down to earth and with no pretext, just very real with steady and focused energy..Mars there can be good for a villain, esp in exalt...the ruler of the 10th house Saturn in conjunction with pluto can also make for a good menacing character...the strong moon trine with the sun-mars at the midheaven shows that the public liked him..Neptune square ascendant is good for film stars as it adds some flash and glamour..
Saturn and Jupiter are in trine..so he had the right amount of exuberance and caution..Mars is strong and well placed in conjunction with the sun, another fire planet, so her was always full of steady energy and detrmination..
The 28th degree in this chart is very important, its very unusual to see three planets occupy the same degree and that degree be the nodal degree...here we have Venus, Saturn and Mercury at it, with Venus and Mercury in detriment and Venus the apex of a Yod..clearly there was a destiny involved with these planets, esp Venus...Venus rules the house of personal wealth and spouse..so there was something very fated about those in his life..That the ruler of the 2nd house is weak and the apex of a Yod shows constant worry about it, which is why he was indeed very tight as he claimed
Jupiter, ruling the 9th house of politics and religion, in Aquarius shows his liberal political views
The moon ruling the nadir and in exalt and angular shows a peaceful and fulfilled end at the end of a long life..Neptune at the nadir can show an unceremonious end..just like a passing of the wind..he probably spent his last years living by the water esp as Neptune is in a water sign

Longevity-
Look for Hyleg degrees and aspects to hylegs area. When personals are afflicted to it then life is often short. Also the Mo Nodes will give you a hint about longevity. Look for natal aspects to the nodes. The best indicator I've noted for somewhat premature deaths of my 50ish friends is solar arc directions combined with eclipses.

Could you explain how you determine what the hylegs are in a chart? Thanks

amy: here's a definition from the astrology encyclopedia: "Definition of HylegThe Giver of Life. Said of a planet so located as to have influence upon the longevity of the native. It is one of the most complex and controversial subjects in the field of astrology, but which has fallen more or less in disfavor as the result of the concept that any attempt to predict the time of death is now generally considered unethical. The strongest planet that occupied one of the Aphetic places became Hyleg, and was deemed to be the Apheta, the giver of life. When it had progressed to an aspect to the place of the Anareta, the taker-away of life, the native was presumed to have run his span and death ensued.
The Aphetic places were from the 25th degree of the Eighth House to the 25th degree of the Eleventh House; from the 25th degree of the Twelfth House to the 25th degree of the First House; and from the 25th degree of the Sixth House to the 25th degree of the Seventh House. If the Sun occupied any of these arcs, it became Hyleg. If not, the Moon was the next choice. Lacking either, the planet which had the most dignities at the moment of the Lunation next preceding birth. Otherwise in a Day birth the Ascendant, or in a Night birth Fortuna, became Hyleg. The Anaretic places were those occupied by Mars or Saturn, or by Sun, Moon, or Mercury if aspected by Mars or Saturn. Otherwise the Descending degree. Wilson's Dictionary gives several pages of rules and exceptions, and then characterizes the whole subject as so much rubbish. It merely amounts to a consideration of aspects formed by progressed or transitory planets to birth positions and aspects, with special attention to a prognosis of death - an application of astrological analysis that is generally frowned upon by modern astrologers.
A planet conjoined to Caput Algol, if joined to the Hyleg, was in earlier days deemed to threaten beheading; the modern equivalent is perhaps defeat at the polls.[this strikes me as hilarious, considering this election year. tylea]

this definition of hyleg is much more compact: "The Sun or Moon are hyleg if either is in the Ascendant between 5 degrees above to 25 degrees below; or if either is in the Descendant between 5 degrees above to 25 degrees below; or between 5 degrees below the 9th house cusp to 25 degrees below the 11th house cusp, which encompasses the entire 10th house; or if neither the Sun or the Moon is located in one of these hylegical places, the Ascendant degree becomes the hyleg." http://astrologynotes.org/Hyleg

Widmark has been my favorite actor since I saw him in The Alamo so long ago.  I always looked for a biography of him to be published but to my knowledge it has not.  What a thrill to find him here!
