Discussion about
Albert Hofmann, born 11 January 1906 at 3:00 PM in Baden

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

It is said that many great discoveries are results of accidents. Albert Hofmann, who identified LSD, presents an example of such a discovery. But like other great discoverers and inventors, Hofmann was open to the possibilities and explored his accidental discovery further, contributing to the modern body of knowledge about plant medicine for physical and psychiatric conditions. In the wake of his recent death, let's study his chart this week:
  • In a New York Times column of January 7, 2006 (see link above), Craig Smith quoted Albert Hoffman: ''It's very, very dangerous to lose contact with living nature." Smith added "He [Hofmann] said any natural scientist who was not a mystic was not a real natural scientist." Where in Hoffmann's chart do you see this connection with nature, the acceptance of the spiritual or mystical dimension to human consciousness?
  • Where is the scientific orientation and discipline shown in the chart?
  • Hofmann's work with plants contributed to the development of medical and psychiatric treatments. Where is his legacy shown? Is it better reflected by his Midheaven or by his 10th house cusp in the Equal House System?

Better living through chemistry! Ven/Uran opposing a first hse Neptune just needed to know more of the mystical. A 12th house PL contributes to exploring the psyche. The So Node in Aquar trips into the vast unknowns of knowledge, squared by Jupiter, no thoughts to unintended consequences.
Think it was Claire Boothe Luce, 10 April 1903, New York City, (Time mag) who furthered the popularity of acid more than others.

From his bio: "The aftereffects [of LSD] were reminiscent of a mystical feeling that came over him as a child when he was wandering through a field: a spiritual oneness with nature. "
This reverence toward a "spiritual oneness with nature" coincides perfectly with Pisces on the MC and ruler Jupiter in Taurus (nature) on the cusp of the 12th.
BTW, speaking of Clare Boothe Luce, apparently there is a strong case that she lied about her actual birthdate all her life (March 10, 1903) because she didn't want to be a Pisces, which she thought were too "wishy-washy."

In the first glance, we have a Mercury-ruled chart, with Mercury angular, and in the sign of "The Great Outdoors," Sagittarius. Right there we have overwhelming curiosity, continual self-teaching (lab work is all about teaching oneself) and the revelation is part of a deeply Sagittarian formula, The Mythic in Nature.
This Mercury "leads" the Sun, and is in a different sign than the Sun, apart from the Sun by around 38 degrees. A wide separation between the Sun and Mercury provides an objectivity apart from the Ego, in which one is also part of the experiment of Life.
Oftentimes, when the Mercury is close to the Sun, the inner promptings are more protective of the Ego. Whereas, in Hofmann's case, his Ego was "from another country," mythologically-speaking, and he could look at it as if it were outside of himself, and therefore subject to his inquiries.
Pars Fortuna also makes an interesting statement: It is ruled by Saturn, and with Venus and Uranus.
There we can surmise a system of values (Venus) connected to the unusual or eccentric, (Uranus), which are ruled by Saturn in the 9th of broadcasting, teaching, himself ruled by Jupiter, lending a constantly expanding vision to his discoveries.
In the 1960's, directly as a result of Dr. Hofmann's discovery of LSD, the trend was "Expand your mind," and his Saturn in the 9th would support that. Moreover, the ruler, Jupiter in Taurus, would lend a more sensual, rich ethic of pleasures and greater support for a frolic among the flowers, like Ferdinand the Bull, who had a poetic bent and a floral philosophy.
Venus, while in Capricorn, is not what we would expect, meaning unlike Saturn, as Saturn himself is unlike himself, especially when ruled by shape-changing Jupiter.
It seems a mythological way to vision the world.

Mystical Neptune and deep Pluto surrounding natal ASC!
Nep/Pluto = ASC: a mystical air flavors personal image (Tyl.)
There's more, but that's what pops out first to me--perhaps because my natal chart has the same combo! ;p

Pluto is very important, sole in air, sole singleton, at the nodal degree and rising..it makes a loose opposition to the chart ruler and is conjunct the ascendant...the depths of consciousness is a way to look at it..peculiar in the sign of Gemini, giving an interesting bend to it..very mutable, talkative, into communicating unconscious desires and expressions..
Mars, ruler of the 6th and Saturn, ruler of the ascendant in Pisces, gives the profession of one involved with chemicals and hallucinations..
Neither light with any bad aspects gave him a long life..Weak Mars/Uranus out of sign conjunction..opposition to pluto and sextile with Saturn and Mars. ruler of the work houses gave a scientific and deliberate mind
The ruler of the descendant is conjunct algol, his wife also lived a long life, but died first..i guess algol has to cut someone down before the native, regardless on when

For the LSD I see Neptune and Ceres (chemicals/drugs/fungus and grain) as a symbolic combination.
In 1938 Hofmann discovered LSD when he was investigating fungus on grain. His progressed Sun was sesquisquare Neptune then. And the progressed MC was conjunct Ceres. Ceres is the symbol of heirdoom and grain or agriculture (nature...) and is placed on top of his chart.
The scientific orientation and discipline is found in the end dispositor of the Midheaven in Aquarius (changing the world, techniques, inventions). Saturn (hierarchy, control, rules...) is close to the MC. Jupiter square MC (tightly) points at the 'international', the publisher or...the academic.

Brief answers I think Hofmann came to this world to discover LSD,to work on it as a carrier and to be honored and be famous. He has gemini ASC.and pluto is there in house 12.means discovering of mind altering substance and research to the core. The ascendant ruler,Mercury is in sagittarius, means mind expansion, conjoin Uranius-social discovery. Uranius-nervous opposes Neptune-drug. Pluto in 12 house trines MC aquarius and south moon node in house 8th means Famous and breakthrough discovery.--South moon node explains it social abuse of the drug and negative side effect 1--- Pisces on the cusp of house 10th explain his acceptance of the spiritual or mystical dimension to human consciousness. The Neptune in cancer house 1 opposes Uranius & Mercury. 2-- Mercury conjoin Uranius in capricon and MC in aquarius conjoin Saturn in Pisces and Pluto in gemini. 3--Contribution to medical and psychiatric treatment is Pluto in house 12th-medical,pschiatric disorder and drug abuse. trine MC and south moon node. --Neptune in cancer house 1 with it opposition to Mercury and Uranius-nervous disorder. Also pisces is on house 10th cusp-mean care of the mental disorder. Mc aquarius and south moon node sextile Mercury
Hoffmann life's mission is to discover and do research.

hofman is a vedic gemini indicating analytical scientific aptititude, moreover the 9th house of higher learning has the scientific acquarius with saturn in own house alongwith mars energy.
moon in own house cancer 2nd alongwith rahu indicates psychiatric aptitude and pyschitatric medicine; and ketu in the 8th is indicative of the mystic depths, and deeper as in saturns sign of capricorn - saturn extending into the next house the 9th the higher knowledge in the mystic acqarius.
moreover jupiter is in the 12th house of occult in taurus, with the lord venus in the 7th house alongwith sun and mercury in the saggitarius indicating capability for frequent flights into foreign realm as also aspecting the first house/the brain-head.
these are my immediate impressions to the best of my preliminary ability and knowledge.

Interesting man and chart. He has an 8th house Capricorn Sun on the point of a Yod to a 12th house Pluto sextile to the Moon's North Node in Leo in the 3rd. Yod's usually occur in the charts of people for whom life takes a fated change of direction at one point. He was a plant and pharmaceutical chemist who serendipitously discovered the hallucinogenic properties of LSD on April 16th 1943. An 8th house Sun can have deep insights and inconjunct a 12th house Pluto would certainly suggest a compulsion to explore the deeper recesses of the mind. His Sun is also trine an indulgent Jupiter in Taurus. On the Neptunian side since Neptune rules drugs, he has a 1st house Neptune opposition a 7th house Uranus - Nep Ur can be escapist, slightly off-the-wall and tending to dabble in psychic realms. He also has two planets in Pisces (ruled by Neptune) in the 10th - Mars and Saturn. They both trine Neptune and sextile Uranus. His Leo Moon's North Node in the 'scientist's 3rd house does have leadership qualities though being involved in a Yod to his Sun what he spearheads will not go smoothly or to plan. He was always disappointed that his discoveries did not lead to more therapeutic uses for LSD after it was hijacked by the hippie culture. Perhaps it comes also from the NNode square that indulgent 11th house Jupiter in Taurus - his discovery was distracted by over indulgence out in society. When he made his discovery by chance in 1943 Neptune had moved a quarter zodiac to be moving towards a square to his Neptune Uranus opposition, forming a T square. Transitting Jupiter was also in an expansive opposition his Sun; and the inventive Saturn Uranus conjunction, often accompanying flashes of insight, was square his 10th house Mars Saturn in Pisces.

Could I humbly suggest that we go back to the old system whereby the astrology of current news is discussed on the Current Newsmaker strand as well as the nominated subject? If memory serves me correctly it was one of the more controlling posters who rather put their foot on that and everyone became nervous about going off subject - so the main strand has become rather stuck. And leaving the American political minutiae to the separate Clinton, Obama, McCain, Bush strands. There's a vast world of subjects out there at the moment - Zimbabwe, Burma, China, Yves St Laurent, Banking etc etc which are not being addressed.

Wow--what more appropriate signature could there be, for the "father of LSD," than Saturn (father) in Pisces (drugs/mysticism) in the 10th conjunct the MC? (I use Placidus, obviously, not equal house). And it's beautifully linked up: the MC ruler, Uranus (discovery/science), is itself ruled by Saturn, which is ruled by Neptune, which is rising. Wow. That ties in the science (Uranus/Saturn) with the mysticism (Neptune).
As for the love of nature, that's a strong feature of earth signs, especially (in my experience) Capricorn and Taurus. Three planets and the Part of Fortune in Capricorn, including Venus (love), opposite Neptune (mystical feeling), with the other religion-related planet, Jupiter, also in an earth sign--that'll do it.
As for the third question, this chart is a good example of Placidus working better than equal house. "Medical and psychiatric treatments"--look at that Mars in Pisces in the 10th house (Placidus): Mars in Pisces, the "surgeon" (Mars) of the soul (Pisces).

Michael Mukasey's birthdate is july 28 1941... venus is presently being transited by saturn - an exact conj.. waxman has asked that he supply cia documents on conversations involving bush and cheney to see whether cheney was involved in a breach of trust in the outing of cia agent valerie plame... that book of scott mcclellans has ruffled a few feathers...
i wonder how it will work out for muskasey, as he is like the gate trying to keep fortress bush protected.. saturn on his venus in virgo must be a bit of a 'judicial' conflict for him as the AG who took over for gonzalas...

Looking at the Uranus Neptune in Hofman's chart accentuated by opposition natally and then triggered by transit when he made his discovery - it is associated historically with high periods in Science especially of the inspirational variety, Art and Golden Ages in rulership. It came up again this week when I was doing Yves St Laurent, the fashion designer's chart for my website. Looking at the four big fashion names in the 20th Century one of the similar factors was that all had strong Uranus Neptune aspects. St Laurent and Giorgio Armani had Uranus Neptune trines; Coco Chanel had a trine tied into a Jupiter sextile; and Christian Dior had a Neptune Uranus opposition which was sextile/trine the Moon's NNode and Mars. Yves St Laurent also had a Moon opposition Mars Pluto which suggests a tortured emotional life which he certainly had and a real fear of women which is odd for someone who spent his life empowering women with stylish clothes. Reminded me of Bobby Fischer, the chess genius and madman, who also had a Mars Pluto Moon square and managed to turn it to his advantage by smashing his opponents. St Laurent arguably attacked his mother through his body with a 150 cigarette a day and a major drug habit. Fascinating to see how the aspects play out in different lives.

In vedic- Where in Hoffmann's chart do you see this connection with nature, the acceptance of the spiritual or mystical dimension to human consciousness? I think it could be Jupiter in nature-loving Taurus in the spiritual 12th house as the 10th house ruler and also as Sun's ruler. He also has Ketu/South node in the 8th house showing an innate inclination towards 8th house matters like mysticism.
Where is the scientific orientation and discipline shown in the chart? Saturn and Mars when together in a house can show technical or scientific inclinations. They are also in Aquarius which is dispassionate and scientific by nature. And being in the 9th house, they might give a scientific type of understanding or philosophy of life. Saturn is also in its best sign in Aquarius, and gives innate self-discipline and objectivity.
It's pretty interesting that he had a NN/SN return right around the discovery of lsd. The node return was exactly on May 3, 1943, about a month later. It's also interesting that his NN is in ashlesha, a nakshatra specifically associated with chemical engineers.
