Jane Fonda has recreated her personal and public lives more often than most. Each decade seems to bring a new Jane: in the '70s she protested, in the '80s she exercised and in the '90s she was a corporate wife. Woven in between these lives is Jane the activist actress. Now she seems to be getting ready for her next act by looking backward and has recently written a book about her journey aptly called "My Life So Far." Let's look at her chart to uncover some of what makes Jane tick:
  • Where in the chart do you see the ability to reinvent herself over and over again? Is it, as she has said, to please her current mate or do the planetary placements reveal other motives?
  • Jane explains that she grew up with a famous father who was cold and hurtful and a mother who committed suicide when Jane was 13. What in the chart might indicate her experience with her parents?
  • Though many people in the '60s and '70s protested the Vietnam War, Jane's actions seemed horrifying at the time--misguided at best, treasonous at worst. Although she apologizes for the hurt she may have caused, she does not apologize for her anti-war efforts. Where in the chart is the rebel who lacks judgment and an ability to understand the ramifications of her actions?
  • I can't resist a question about the yod in her chart. How do you interpret the yod formed by the sextile of Sun to Mars as they each form a quincunx to Pluto?

I'm highly surprised that nobody has pointed out Turner's Pluto/Moon square (out of sign). This, in itself, psychologically speaking, would be an indicator or someone who has strong emotional trust issues. Drama, intrigue and infidelity are typical of this aspect (not to slight those of you with the aspect). I would have warned Jane before she married him that he is, essentially, a child (moon/pluto corresponds, in psychology, to someone whose emotional growth, in my [counseling] experience, stops at around 6 years old). Who'd want to marry a child? Jane would, with a venus/neptune square. She might confuse compassion and pity with Love. Also, a tendency to try to rescue the injured party (as she couldn't save her mother, she would, throughout life, try to "rescue" her mates) would lead to problems.

I think that Ted & Jane basically have pretty compatible charts. However, I think that they are both relationship junkies. Jane has venus in sagittarius square neptune. Neptune/venus people are addicted to relationships but sagittarius is really the nature of person that is fickle and doesn't settle in relationships. ted has sagittarius rising - no wonder he's a womanizer. A man with that sign rising isn't easy to pin down. He also has the ruler of his 7th in his first - which tells me that having a woman in his life is extremely important to him. He also has the moon in libra - another sign that having a woman is important to him. They are both now under separative transits. Ted has pluto going over his ascendant and jane has uranus opposing her moon, the ruler of her 7th. I think they would have stayed together longer is these separative transits had not come up. Don't be surprised if they both remarry to other people in the future.

Altho Sag likes variety and will change themselves in order to hang out with their friends, it's Neptune and the Aquarius influence that makes her so hard to follow, getting something out of what whatever experience or interesting pastime of the moment and then passing on.  
Cancer on the 7th requires she be taken care of and she needs and she doesn't mind being there to comfort them. However, if Moon in Leo doesn't get enough attention or positive attention she'll demand it. He has a love of beauty and gracefulness he'd rather not be with someone that can be very bombastic. Both have Jupiter in Aquarius and Sag planets. They could have gotten along but probably got bored - keeping it too light for any solidity!

At first glance, I see several factors which seem to imply compatibility between Ted and Jane. In the first place, she has Pluto in her 7th house opposing her Ascendant which implies that she would prefer to have a powerful man as a partner. Ted's Ascendant is on the midpoint of her Venus/Nodes in Sagittarius. Her Mars is conjunct his Jupiter and her Sun is sextile his Moon. Her Midheaven is conjunct his Nodes, Sun and Venus. I haven't looked at a composite chart so cannot comment on that. There should be strong attraction between them.  
Jane's Pluto in the 7th house in the sign of Cancer would make her especially appreciate a good provider. Since Pluto and Cancer are also associated with politics, that might be a factor in her marriage to Tom Hayden which lasted for a number of years. On the other hand, her Venus and Sun in Sagittarius, as well as her Moon in Leo make her somewhat carefree and fun-loving. She also needs attention and indications that she is loved and appreciated. Mars is in the 29th degree of Aquarius which brings the qualities of that sign, as well as Pisces into her behavior and actions. I believe she was sincere in her political activism, especially since Jupiter, ruler of her Sun sign, is also in Aquarius and Libra is on the Midheaven. Her Sun square Saturn points to possible difficulties with men and again adds emphasis to her attraction to those who are domineering and leaders. She would appreciate a man who is reliable, responsible and loyal. Therefore, she would probably find it very difficult to forgive someone. Ted's Sun is in Scorpio, conjunct Venus, which makes him very attractive to women as well as a somewhat domineering person. Their placement in the 12th house could explain a propensity for having illicit affairs. His Pluto in Leo in the 8th house is another indicator of his charisma and a strong sexual drive. Mars in Libra, opposing Saturn in Aries, however, could bring some problems in that area as well as emphasizing his leadership skills and ambition.  
I'm not sure what advice I would give to them other than to remind them of the positive contacts in their charts and the need for them to remember how important their marriage is to each of them and the commitment they have made to each other. It is, after all, up to them to determine whether or not the marriage is worth saving.

Boy, does Jane have the market cornered on critical (29) degrees, or what? She also dispels a popular belief that Jupiter on the ascendant equals excess weight. In her case, it's excess vitality. I'll have more to say when I look at Ted's chart. But it's very difficult to count on stability with manic depressives. They're brilliant and exciting, and very wonderful. But that along with Mr. Turner's wealth and track record, I can't imagine that she would have expected a long monogamous run.

I think Jane's chameleon nature comes from her Grand Mutable Cross involving the Sun hidden away in the 12th, Saturn in the 3rd (anyone see her father's influence here?), Chiron in the 5th and Neptune in the 8th. The 5th/8th houses point to the importance of her romantic relationships in the changes (and disappointments) she has undergone. With Jupiter conjunct the Ascendant and Mercury trine Uranus she is open to and interested in every new trend to come along. In fact, she's usually at the forefront as seen with her workout videos at the beginning of the fitness craze. The angular Uranus shows her uniqueness and rebellious nature that has polarized the public about her. Pluto in the 7th opposing the Ascendant (and Jupiter) indicates her attraction to powerful controlling men and the influence they have had on her multiple public incarnations from her marriage to Roger Vadim when she became a Movie Star-Sex Kitten to Tom Hayden when she was Political Wife- Activist- Businesswoman to Ted Turner when she became a Happy Stay at Home Wife- Philanthropist. The word is - or should that be The Word - that a factor in her separation from Turner is her new religious faith as a born-again Christian. Whatever is happening, she seems to be feeling the transit of Saturn through her 4th conjunct Uranus and tr. Uranus in the 1st opposing the Moon in the 7th, also ruler of the 7th.

I would tell them that as soon as the sex wore off, they wouldn't have much in common. There is no tenderness and no glue and that the things they have in common only appear so.  
When I first looked at the two wheels together, at first glance, I thought I had repeated the same chart. By whole sign they both have sun, venus and north node in the twelfth. Ted Turner is so private that I doubt if his own mother had a clue what he was up to.  
I bet they had a really nice bedroom, both with venus in the twelfth. They are both gregarious, Ted with Mercury in Sag on the Asc and Jane with Jupiter in Aquarius, the higher octave of mercury, on her asc.  
The influence of the twelfth house on the sun/venus will have a chameleon-like influence on a person. So Ted is probably a chameleon, too, it's just more secretive for him with his Scorpio there. Twelfth house sun people are wildly creative, having access to their subconscious mind at all times.  
Jane can't help but be a blow-hard. She has Sun/venus/North Node all in Sagittarius and the moon in Leo. She will take attention any way she can get it, but getting it from a mate is the most meaningful with the moon in the eighth (whole sign). Moon is heavily aspected, so she was able to get in touch with the public consciousness through subversive means.  
Jane is actually quite brilliant with Uranus trine Mercury. Uranus in the fifth is all about shocking performances.

Both. Jupiter is conjunct the Ascendant and in opposition to Pluto the co-ruler of the Midheaven. Jupiter should probably be called the ruler of the ASC and the chart because of its proximity to the ASC. The opposition of Pluto to Jupiter shows that the ability to transform (Pluto) would involve the polarization with another (Pluto/7th house) and through the refining of ones beliefs (Jupiter).  
She has a Capricorn ASC and Saturn is in trine with Pluto as well showing her ability to create new structures to inhabit her reinvented self. Mars in Aquarius (ruler of the MC) is in sextile to the Sun and the Sun is in quincunx to Pluto. Again; the Pluto contact to the Sun shows the ability to transform and reinvent one self. Pluto is the co-ruler of the MC which reinforces the transformational theme.
<b>2.) </b> <b> Jane explains that she grew up with a famous father who was cold and hurtful and a mother who committed suicide when Jane was 13. What in the chart might indicate her experience with her parents? </b>
Sun square Saturn shows that her relationship with her defining parent would be strained. That Saturn is also the ruler of the 12th house indicates that parent would not be in her life and how that absence would affect her unconscious mind. The Moon is in opposition to Mars and a weak trine to both Venus and the Sun. The Venus/Sun contacts to the Moon indicate that she did get (felt) loved at some point. The opposition to Mars however indicates possible violence or aggression.
That Mars is the natal ruler of the MC and in opp to the natural ruler of the 4th house further indicates the tension between her parents. Venus is the natal ruler of the 4th and it has a square to Neptune. An idealized parent or an alcoholic, substance abusing or just plain lost parent.

Retrograde Mercury in the 12th is trine Uranus in the third which can show flashes of insight. Jupiter opposite Pluto shows one who is always refining ones philosophical beliefs, and because of the opposition is on the Ascendant/Descendant axis this refining always occurs through polarization of my beliefs versus yours. Mars rules the third house of thinking communicating and Mars is opposed the Moon further emphasizing this tendency to polarize. Mercury in the 12th shows how she is unaware of the effect her communications have on others.
<b>4.) </b> <b> How do you interpret the yod formed by the sextile of Sun to Mars as they each form a quincunx to Pluto?</b>
This Yod is a very defining feature in this chart as it is very tight and it includes the Jupiter/Pluto opposition which some call a "Boomerang" Yod. It also tells you much about question number three. Her very tight Sun/Mars sextile shows one who is not afraid to take action. The Yod that Sun/Mars makes to Pluto shows her uncertainty about how to use power and her attraction to mates who have power.  
The Jupiter/Pluto opp that sits in both midpoints of the Sun/Mars sextile shows that this uncertainty would focus around philosophical/political issues and it is through the aforementioned polarization she gets in to trouble.  
Conversely the Pluto focal point in the 7th is the thing that focus's and grounds her Sun/Mars. This is why powerful partners that she must be subservient to reign her in and slow her down; to her own benefit usually.

I won't even bother to read the comments of the "experts" which sound like twiddle from an astro- cookbook. My first observations are the planet in crisis indicated by 29 degrees+ on Pluto, sun and mars. Then the Sun square Saturn and all the pain of low self esteem. Her father hated her. Her mother was no better indicated by the Venus sq neptune. The rest of her life came from these. The MArs sq MC had to be dealt with. she may be embarrassed today about the rebellion but with a chart like this it was necessary and healthy. How about some psychological approaches to these charts. They are too obviously ignored M

A twelfth house Sun usually makes one become their father or completely dismiss the father and Jane was the former. A Yod to Pluto in the 7th is relentless in the world and especially in personal relationships. Yods, if activated, take over the individual and the Jupiter in Aquarius connects with the whole world in a sense. She was correct to be upset with the War but was not wise in her methods. Patriotism has been redefined in America to only include those who are willing to send their most precious sons and daughters out to be killed for vague reasons. We should have the courage of our convictions but do it at the ballot box rather than incur the wrath of society in our efforts. Mars inconjunct to Pluto does not think before acting.

For the current comments, M, please refrain from making snide remarks to or about posters. If you've got an issue with someone, take it off line. There are no experts on this forum. It is a learning community, which means everyone can learn from each other. Please be respectful.
What you can contribute to the general learning of all? You've pointed out the 29 degree factor in Jane Fonda's chart--what psychological insights can you contribute that are of an astrological nature? If you think they are too obviously ignored, please enlighten us with your perspective.

As to the almost perfect "yod". First off the placement of the planets is particularly interesting in that the sun is cuspis at 29 degrees 19 of Sagg in the 12th house, along with a retrograde Mecury at 15 degrees. One would think with this placement she would feel quite at home in the world of Illusion. Especially so with Mercury the communicator there. With Mars on the 2nd house cusp of Money and Pluto in the 7th house of Partners, it would appear that this yod is the essential core of her being. Mars and Pluto rule Scorpio. She would be involved with some very powerful monied people, married or not, in the Entertainment business or the world of illusion in general, like Politics or even the under world. With the Sun and Mercury in the 12th, she may be more sensitve to things unseen and feel moved to communicate them to the world. ALSO - Jupiter is right there in the middle, right on the ascendent in opposition to Pluto. Here is where her good fortune lies in abundance. The retrograde Mercury may not be too helpful at times.
