Discussion about
Louis Armstrong, born 4 August 1901 at 10:00 PM in New Orleans LA

This discussion is imported from the comment board on the previous astrodatabank.com website.

Every biography of Armstrong includes the incident at 11 where he was arrested and put in the Home for Colored Waifs for firing a pistol on New Year's Eve. This turned out to be a great opportunity for him because it was there that he received his first music lessons. What is the AstroSignature of a breakthrough opportunity? How does this man beam such joy and happiness? It is hard to live on the road. His four marriages are a testament to this. Can you read a "life on the road" in his chart?

With the time given, 1996 TL66 is exactly conjunct the Saturn MC conjunction - and thus, like them, squaring Mars & Moon - and closely quincunx Sun. Hard to believe, but there it is:
Saturn 11:02 Capricorn rx MC(10:00) 11:54 Capricorn 1996 TL66 11:54 Capricorn rx Sun 12:01 Leo

It may be noteworthy that during the 11th year, 1996 TL66 was exactly squaring the ASC:
nat ASC (10:00) 18 ar 36

There are basically 3 bodies right now which I am very impressed with which are newly discovered outer bodies - 1996 TL66, Varuna, and 1996 PW.
1996 PW is a body which travels as close to the Sun as the asteroid belt and as far away as 469 AU from the Sun (15 TIMES Neptune's distance). (astronomical details here http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/lists/Others.html and orbit diagram here http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/db?name=1996PW). One signature which we have been seeing for this is a "great uniter" - which cuts across cultural differences. Martin Luther King, for instance, had this body opposite Venus. Here, it is a close conjunction.Venus 7:45 Virgo 1996 PW 8:17 Virgo

Armstrong's life on the road is due to the fact that the ruler of his 9th house (travel) is very close to the MC. He also has the ruler of the 3rd house, short distance travel, in the 4th house. A Hindu astrologer would say that the mercury in the 4th house fully aspects the 10th. Armstrong had a grand trine in fire, which included his sun and ascendant. It's no wonder he exhibited such joy and happiness.

I was taught that Saturn dominating a chart results in a job with order, plan and discipline as undisputable priorities. At least this planet has NOTHING to do with improvisation and spontaneous creativity... Or I am too old-fashioned astrologer? Please, friends help me to find the truth!

Jazz improv is a creative process that requires a great deal of spontaneity, sensitivity, individualism and imagination. A rising moon in the fire sign Aries is a lovely image that reflects this creative impulse. Satchmo had a challenging role to play as a Negro in a white man's world, trying to bridge a few worlds, and not necessarily being appreciated for it by some who resented his abilities. I'm sure he'd be happy to see the recognition he's receiving now. Keith Jarrett has this moon placement, although I don't know if it's rising.
As to the question how does this man beam such joy and happiness, look to a happy Leo sun in trine to the rising moon, and Uranus in sag. The Saturn/Midheaven in Capricorn requires that he be grounded in his music {career} to stabilize, and release the creative potential of this grand fire trine.
Regarding the 11th year, and the significant turning point it represented, there's much room for conjecture. Based on the fact it was an arrest I would immediately figure the Pluto in Gemini was involved. Perhaps there would also be something connected to the Midheaven, as it was a connection to his long term career path. The transits have mercury opposite the Pluto, while the sun is at the sat/Midheaven on New Years Eve of his 11th year. The progs have p moon squaring the r Pluto, close to p Venus which is trining the p M. Off on a tangent, I've heard some numerologists use the degree numbers as an indicator of turning points. His Saturn/Midheaven is at 11 degrees. For a midpoint, the p Sun would is at the M/Jupiter midpoint by hard aspect, which is also a favourable indicator for one's eventual worldly success.
About life on the road. Isn't 'the road' thing a mercury activity, and home a 4th house doodad? Looks like a 4th house mercury to me. Then, when you use whole signs, you can see how it is a very stressed out mercury in that great big grand square. Merc opposite the m/sat career thinamajiggy, squaring the rising improv moon master, which is opposite all those 7th house women making Mars in Libra demands on him! What a mess! 4 planets, 4 marriages, 4 angles, and 4get about it and go play your horn Satchmo.......

The planet house placements all make sense to us (especially the Moon in twelfth), but using a brawl to time his birth means that 10PM is only approximate. We estimate a more exact time of 10:20PM. This would place TR Saturn and TR Mars on New Year's Eve 1913 on the second and ninth house cusps, respectively. Mars is a "breakthrough" planet, the ninth is the house of law and "higher education", and Sag. is the sign of luck. Domiciled Sag. TR Jupiter conjunct TR Mars also applies to natal Chiron, in opposition to TR Pluto and natal Neptune (the twelfth-house ruler of confinement). Jupiter-Neptune aspects indicate special protection, and Cap. Chiron (conjunct natal Jupiter trine natal Venus) relates to handicrafts and skills such as the ability to read music, which Satchmo learned at the Colored Waifs' Home. Astrology and astrological moments are always the sum of all parts, and it's not easy to single out signature aspects. Nevertheless, we agree with Sam Gunderson that lunar nodes indicate fated events in life, and the TR South Node formed an exact semi-sextile with natal Venus when Satchmo was arrested.
Louis Armstrong's Leo Sun-Aries Moon trine was part of two overlapping kites with his ruling Libra Mars. While Mars in Aries acts to please himself, Mars in Libra tries to please others. All this contributed to his projecting a happy face, and he was later criticized by some blacks for adopting a servile (sixth-house) role. He replied that while they envied him and felt entitled to more of their own, they weren't so interested in working (sixth-house) to get it.
The ninth-house ruler Jupiter in the ninth and the fourth-house ruler Moon in the twelfth indicate his life on the road and his difficulty in putting down roots. Domiciled Saturn eventually prevailed, however, and he realized the ambition of having a permanent home with his fourth wife.

To be famous one must touch the hearts of the collective whether it be good or bad. Our heroes are many and varied. Satchmo had a composite t square in Capricorn and his sorrow came out through his music and also his just nice guy. Our heroes are very human and vulnerable. We must examine our own motivations in honoring these people. As I learn to forgive myself and my clients for our foibles. I can love easily.

1. Every biography of Armstrong includes the incident at 11 where he was arrested and put in the Home for Colored Waifs .. a great opportunity for him because it was there that he received his first music lessons. What is the AstroSignature of a breakthrough opportunity?
In September 1912 Pluto entered 0 degrees Cancer where his natal Neptune lies. Since Neptune rules his 12th house of confinement, this conjunction could symbolize forced (Pluto) confinement (Neptune). His solar return for his 1912 birthday has four angular placements: Jupiter in Sagittarius on the return Ascendant opposite Saturn on the return Descendant, and Chiron in Pisces on the return IC opposite Mars on the return Midheaven. The planetary T-square (Jupiter, Saturn, Mars) on the return angles indicates a very important year. The outlet of this 1912 T-square is Chiron (the wounded healer) in Pisces (the sign of music). Return Chiron also falls on the Placidus 12th house cusp (confinement, music) of his natal chart. In addition, in July 1912 his solar arc directed Neptune opposed natal Saturn, and in December 1912 solar arc Chiron conjoined natal Saturn.
2. How does this man beam such joy and happiness?
Fiery Aries ascending, with the Moon having just risen, gives exuberance and emotional rapport with others. Sun in dramatic Leo, the sign of the performing artist, trines his Moon in ardent Aries. The Sun also conjoins in Part of Fortune in Leo. Venus, a planet of joy and pleasure, trines his career Midheaven from his natal fifth house of fun and creative endeavors.
3. It is hard to live on the road. His four marriages are a testament to this. Can you read a "life on the road" in his chart?
With natal Saturn on his Midheaven (career) in a T-square with the Moon/Mars opposition across his horizon axis, he would experience many hardships on his way to the top. The Jupiter (long-distance travel) opposing Neptune (music) across his 3rd and 9th houses of travel is an indicator of the stress he would experience due to his life as a musician on the road. Pluto on his Placidus 3rd house cusp (local travel) trines his Descendant and brings the compulsive need to travel into his marital relationships. The travel planet Mercury squares his Descendant, suggesting that frequent trips would put a strain on his marriage. [was_link]mailto:tonylouis@aol.com[/was_link]

Louis Armstrong's Vedic chart reflects the power of a strong Hamsa yoga. Hamsa yoga is formed when Jupiter is in its own sign and in an angle from the Moon. He has Jupiter in Sag in the 10th house of career and the Moon in the first house conjoined with the Ascendant in Pisces, creating a relationship between the Self ( first house) and the career ( 10th house ). Jupiter also being the ruler of the ascendant makes the yoga even stronger. His jovial joy is reflected by this union of Jupiter and the Moon in the chart. Jupiter is a significator for music in Vedic. His Jupiter aspects Venus in the 6th Vedic house of work, reflecting his work in the arts.
At age eleven, Louis was in the Dasa of Mercury with Subdasas of Saturn and Jupiter beginning on 10-12-1912. Because Saturn rules the 12th house of confinement this could create imprisonment. Louis' Mercury is placed in the fifth house of study along with the Sun in his natal Vedic chart. Saturn aspects both the Sun and Mercury in his chart. So a Mercury-Saturn period could bring in new learning with the twist of it happening in a place of confinement (since Saturn is a twelfth house influence). When you add Jupiter to the mix, you bring in the energy that unlocks the magic of Louis' chart (it rules the ascendant, creates Hamsa yoga, and is placed strongly in the 10th house). In conclusion, the Mercury-Saturn-Jupiter period occurring at age eleven brought in an influence of study/learning (Mercury, 5th house), confinement (Saturn ruling 12th), and of spiritual grace and auspiciousness (Jupiter in Hamsa yoga, ruling the 10th and 1st).

I've been experimenting with Whole Sign houses, and if you look at Satchmo's chart using this system, the Grand Trine in fire falls in his 1st, 5th and 9th houses, well describing his brash personality (Moon in Aries in the 1st) harmonizing with his joyful creativity (Sun in Leo in the 5th) both exchanging trinal energy with Uranus in Sag in the 9th, showing how his personality and creativity propelled him into a life on the road. The Aries Moon then opposes Mars in the 7th, showing the difficulties the energy of the Grand Trine sent into his marriages. The 7th house Mars squares the Midheaven and Saturn, further emphasizing the conflict between marriage and public life. Another indication of life on the road, using the whole sign system, is Neptune in the 4th - home is elusive and/or illusory, always shifting and unstable. Neptune in the 4th also describes his early life spent in the midst of prostitutes, drug-takers, etc. I'm liking whole sign houses more and more! Best to all.

This is quite a find for me. Louis Armstrong has a partile S3 from Mars to Neptune. Septiles are very prominent in the chart of Mozart and the 154 degrees is the most powerful. The midpoint of these two bodies is 21Leo34.
It just so happens that this midpoint falls on the Vertex of the chart I use for the United States. Also interesting is that Geo. Dubya has his Venus @ 21Leo.
I now have 13 sources that give credence to this US Chart. July 4, 1776 7:30:21 PM (about sunset) and Jefferson said, "...the shadows were long." Midheaven 8'Sc34. 3/9 intercepted Aries/Libra (there are no Libra or Aries States). This is in the Koch system. If you use Equal, Saturn sits on the 10th house cusp in Libra.
If you rectify the chart to 9:56:18 PM there is a partile K-OS aspect between Moon and Neptune. The K-OS is half of the S3 and means just what is says.
Considering the brawl at the time of his birth this fits quite right. There is also a K-OS between Neptune and Vesta, very revealing.

At age 11 the transiting mean nodes were on his mars moon opposition. The nodes, transiting and natal indicate fated happenings during a person's life.
Apparently he was born to be a musician, and this was fate's way of getting him started.

I think that the AstroSignature of his childhood breakdown/breakthrough is several different points. One, Louis Armstrong was 11 years old but in his 12 year and his Natal sun is 12 degrees Leo. Also his Saturn/MC are at 11 degrees ... saturn being restrictive and structure, he was put in a home and taught the "correct way" to play the horn (saturn). But he was also given a format in which he made his career (MC).
Louis Armstrong on stage beamed love and laughter out at his audience, from the time he came on stage, we were laughing and enjoying ourselves watching and listening to him as much as he enjoyed playing, teasing, and laughing with us... He truly had the sun's presences in the theatre and like the plants following the sun, all our eyes followed his movements on the stage. But the excitement was so strong that within 1/2 hour most of us were up and dancing, even though that wasn't always done at concerts at that time (50's) (frowned upon by management).
Of course that was the Sun in Leo trine the Moon on the Asc trine the Uranus in Sag. It was a two way street, you know, the more he improvised the more we loved him and his music, he heard this in our applause and in our laughter; so the more he improvised. His horn was truly the magical flute. And the Magic he spread was Joy and Laughter and Innovative Music. It was a wonderful experience to tune into his Leo Rays of Louis Armstrong's Magnificence of Soul!
His "life on the road" and lack of stability in his early life is shown astrologically by the Moon as the ruler of the fourth being in the 12 house ... opposed by Mars in the sixth and the grand fire trine of Moon, Sun and Uranus. As the Moon and Mercury are the rulers of the childhood ... as are the 1st and 4th houses ... that Mercury in the fourth has only a square to the asc/desc signifying some childhood loneliness and difficulties. It also gives him, on the positive side a great deal of flexibility.
The life on the road is defined by that Moon/mars opposition from the twelve to sixth...just not being able to settle down because of his work and because it just "didn't feel right" at that time. I think once he reach his forties and had survived and succeed, he could do anything! Louis's travels in Europe, although at times difficult (Uranus in Sag); he was almost forced out of the country for about 5 or 6 years ... for work and his own personal safety; gave him an opportunity to see the prejudice in United States for what it was and the realization that there was another way.
Louis Armstrong was a man of his times but he did it his way and aren't we glad he did. Thank you for giving us a chart from this wonderful era of magicians/musicians.

At 11 years of age the Sun moved by OD to sextile Neptune in 3rd house = good for both music & suffering and as ruler 12 house it seems to be a karmic and destiny making event. As the sun moves on it will come to Venus, insuring that he goes onwards and upwards. His fiery joy of life & spontanaity come from Moon in Aries conjunct Ascendant completing a fire trine that involves Sun in leo and the unique individuality of Uranus. Life on the road is indicated by ruler 4 house, the Moon in a cardinal sign, and rising opposite Mars ruler of the Ascendant - very restless person. Plus Pluto and Neptune in the 3 house, a full 9 house, Mercury in the 4 house aspecting the nodes - his destiny is to travel!?

The joy and happiness that radiates from this wonderful individual can be mainly attributed to a strong fire grand trine involving the Sun, Moon, and Uranus on the cusps of the 1st,5th,and 9th. Activated by the intensity of the Sun in essential dignity, angular moon opposed it's dispositor, and Uranus opposed Pluto. The Leo Sun has no problem being itself in the house of "joy" (fifth), this shines through a boisterous Moon rising in Aries.
