Art and Astrology

Hey everyone!

I wasn't sure where to put this thread, but decided that this board would be the best place for it.  Anyway, have you ever looked at a piece of artwork and just thought, "Oh, that is so Neptune-influenced!"  Sounds corny, but I'm a bit zany, so.... Grinsend.

Here are some pieces that I would like to share:

"Birth of Venus" by Botticelli - This strikes me as very Venusian (how nice of me to point out the obvious, right?) but more Taurean than Libran, with a bit of a Neptunian touch...perhaps due to the water scene.

"The Dream" by Henri Rousseau - The name itself sounds very Neptunian/Pisces, but the painting itself looks a bit Virgoan, surrounded by nature.

"The Wedding Portrait" by Jan van Eyck - This strikes me as very Capricorn-like!  The painting is very structured and dark, despite the happy union, lol...I wish I could find a close up of the mirror on the wall because you can see the detailed reflection in it, which is really mind-blowing!

"Jupiter and Io" by Correggio - Despite the name, this piece seems Scorpio/Taurus to me.  Jupiter disguised in the form of dark vaporous clouds, which seems rather Plutonian to me, and there is the nymph, Io, who strikes me as very sensual/Taurean.

I would say Uranus in Capricorn.
Actually my Asperger's son went as this painting (wore a suit and bowler and held an apple in front of his face on a stick) when he was , like, 6 years old. He thought of it!

Great thread crimson. There is something about the quality of the light in the images that make me think of particular signs. For instance, even though the birth of venus would obviously be related to the venus-related signs there is something very cancerian to me about it. Partially, it would be the ocean/water, with the woman emerging from a shell--but also the light looks like mid-summer late june/july. Then "The Dream" which seems Virgoan to me as well, probably for many of the same reasons as crimson, but also because the light is dimming, getting deeper, like fall. "The Wedding Portrait" has the deep colors of the darkest days of winter.

You're welcome, Ed!

wangshan, that's a great choice for Uranus engl. in Steinbock.  The symmetry and formal attire, as well as the muted colors, depicts  Capricorn very clearly.  Throw in the green apple and we've got Uranus!  Your son sounds adorable!  Only 6 years old and is able to to creatively bring this piece to life!

marienne, I'd like to change my views regarding "The Birth of Venus."  After reading your take on it, it does seem very Cancerian...perhaps Venus in Krebs?

Here's another favorite piece of mine, "The Swing" by Jean Honore Fragonard.  The colors in the central part of the painting are very soft and light, with dark contrasts near the edges/corners.  The theme overall is a bit flirty and light-hearted.  I say Neptun in Waage.  (This painting is circa 1767, and Neptune was actually in Virgo at the time...and I'm a Virgo!  Must explain why I like this piece so much, lol.)

Thanks Neplightly!

Anyone else care to share your favorite pieces?

This is "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali.  The melting clocks and the random objects make no sense to me whatsoever... hence Aqua comes to mind, lol.  Though the colors are rather ordinary, the lighting and shading makes them seem very bold.  The name sounds very fixed and Mercurial.  Merkur in Wassermann, or perhaps Mercury in Gemini aspecting Uranus.  Dali isn't my favorite, but I find this piece very enigmatic and intriguing, yet so lonely for some reason...probably because it looks so desolate.

Sorry cannot post a scanned version of the tryptich, but Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" illustrates the full range of Taurean expression for me.

"The Progress of Love" series by Fragonard (Frick collection) are among the favorites of my good friend with Saturn-Moon-Neptune stellium in late Libra. Painted in 1790-91, Neptune was in late Libra during that period.

Is sculpture okay? Zwinkernd

Neptune of course for the spiritual surrender; but also certainly Pluto for its widely interpreted (from St. Theresa's own words) sexual expression. Chiron too for the wounding..

(hmm..am a novice at this sort of thing. I was going to attach Bernini's "Ecstasy of St. Theresa," but the file is apx. 1 kb too large..)

That's a good pick, it does portray Taurus to both extremes.  The third/last panel seems more Plutonian to me though.

Here's the pick for ya!

I love sculptures too!  "Ecstasy of St. Theresa" is also one of my favorites!  And I never thought about Chiron being involved.  I like "Nike of Samothrace", but I'm not sure what to make of it, lol.  Anyway, here's the pic for your sculpture.

I had not either (thought of Chiron) 'til just now thinking about your thread, cr. Still not sure whether it really applies given the divine nature of the statue's portrayal. Thanks for adding the pic!

"Nike of Samothrace" rings a bell though I am not sure I am familiar with that one..

Here is Sandro Botticelli's Primavera - I read about its astrological symbolism in Thomas Moore's book The Planets Within: the astrological psychology of Marcilio Ficino.

There is an opinion that this painting depicts Venus-Mercury conjunction.

Venus in the centre, looking a bit maternal, presiding over fertility and beauty on earth - and Mercury in the far left, pointing to the sky, the region of pure spirit (two kinds of love: human and divine).

The movement on the canvas is from right to left, i.e. going to the more spiritual place. It is a complete circle and Mercury is there to keep it in motion (ruling wind).

From spirit to body and back to spirit - a sensual (Venus) celebration of ordinary life and interpreting (Mercury) the spiritual significance of earthly existence.

I have not yet done enough research on this, but the depiction of the peacock and peacock's tail in art is the symbol of Jupiter (and sometimes Venus) - life's colour, optimism and versatility. The beauty of multiplicity.

Pluto - life and death choices.  instinct versus choice - fate and destiny - the freedom to choose creates anxiety.  This painting by Alex Colville was inspired by a poem whose epigraph read: "None shall break ranks..."
